Atrasentan Side Effects
Applies to atrasentan: oral tablet.
Important warnings
This medicine can cause some serious health issues
Do not use if you are pregnant.
Use effective birth control.
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficult breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
-
liver problems--loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain (upper right side), tiredness, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or
-
fluid retention--shortness of breath (even while lying down), swelling, rapid weight gain (especially in your face and midsection).
Your treatment may be delayed or permanently discontinued if you have certain side effects.
Common side effects may include:

swelling of hands, legs, ankles and feet; or
-
anemia (low red blood cells).

The most common adverse reactions in 5% or more patients included peripheral edema and anemia.[Ref]
Cardiovascular
- Frequency not reported: Hypotension
Hematologic
- Very common (10% or more): Decreased hemoglobin (12%)
- Common (1% to 10%): Anemia
Hepatic
- Common (1% to 10%): Elevated ALT/AST (greater than 3 times the upper limit of normal)
Metabolic
- Very common (10% or more): Peripheral edema (10%)
Other
- Frequency not reported: Decreased sperm counts
