Applies to pemirolast ophthalmic: ophthalmic solution

In addition to its needed effects, some unwanted effects may be caused by pemirolast ophthalmic (the active ingredient contained in Alamast). In the event that any of these side effects do occur, they may require medical attention.

Severity: Moderate

If any of the following side effects occur while taking pemirolast ophthalmic, check with your doctor or nurse as soon as possible:

Less common:
  • Cough (mucus-producing)
  • headache (severe)
  • stomach pain and cramping
  • pain and tenderness around eyes and cheekbones
  • painful menstrual bleeding
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • tightness in chest
  • troubled breathing

Minor Side Effects

Some of the side effects that can occur with pemirolast ophthalmic may not need medical attention. As your body adjusts to the medicine during treatment these side effects may go away. Your health care professional may also be able to tell you about ways to reduce or prevent some of these side effects. If any of the following side effects continue, are bothersome or if you have any questions about them, check with your health care professional:

More common:
  • Chills
  • cough
  • fever
  • sneezing
  • sore throat
Less common:
  • Back pain
  • burning feeling in eye
  • eyelid swelling
  • eye dryness
  • foreign body feeling in eye
  • general feeling of eye discomfort
  • increased itching of the eye
  • redness of the eye

For Healthcare Professionals

Applies to pemirolast ophthalmic: ophthalmic solution


Respiratory side effects have included rhinitis and cold or flu symptoms in 10% to 25% of patients. Less common side effects that have occurred in less than 5% of patients have included bronchitis, cough, sinusitis, sneezing, and nasal congestion.[Ref]

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects have included headache in 10% to 25% of patients.[Ref]


Ocular side effects have included burning, dry eye, foreign body sensation, and ocular discomfort in less than 5% of patients.[Ref]


Hypersensitivity reactions have been reported in less than 5% of patients.[Ref]


Genitourinary side effects have included dysmenorrhea (less than 5%).[Ref]


Musculoskeletal side effects have included backache in less than 5% of patients.[Ref]
