Can I apply DEET and a sunscreen at the same time?

If you are applying a sunscreen and a bug repellent, first apply the sunscreen, and then apply the repellent. If you are using a product that combines both a sunscreen and a repellent in the same bottle, you'll need to reapply the sunscreen separately because it may need to be reapplied more frequently than the repellent.

Follow the application and dosing instructions for each product as listed on their labels.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend using that products that combine a sunscreen with DEET in one product on children. Sunscreen should be applied every 2 hours to help prevent sunburn, but DEET is typically used once a day in children.

Keep in mind that reapplying the combination product too often may lead to side effects due to the repellent.

Swimming or sweating may lessen the time that these products are effective and a reapplication may be needed. Always follow the package directions.

Are Insect Repellents Safe?

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using products that have been shown to be effective in clinical trials and that contain active ingredients registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use as insect repellents on skin or clothing. Follow label directions to determine if any products are safe in children.

These repellents include:

• DEET products: duration of 8-12 hours (Off!, Cutter, Sawyer, Ultrathon). Higher concentrations will work for a longer period of time, not be more effective.
• Picaridin for skin: duration of up to 8 hours (Cutter Advanced, Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus, Natrapel, OFF Family Care Picaridin VIII).
• IR3535: duration of 4 to 8 hours (Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Expedition, SkinSmart)
• 2-Undecanone: duration of 2 to 4 hours (methyl nonyl ketone)
• Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD) only for use in those 3 years and older per the CDC: duration up to 6 hours (Repel, Off! Botanicals). NOTE: ”Pure” oil of lemon eucalyptus (essential oil) is not recommended. It has not been tested by EPA for safety and effectiveness.
