Ophthalmic antihistamines and decongestants

What are Ophthalmic antihistamines and decongestants?

Ophthalmic antihistamines and decongestants are eye drops or gels that have been specifically made to be administered into or around the eye that contain antihistamines and/or decongestants.

Antihistamines block histamine release from histamine-1 receptors and are used to treat the symptoms of an allergic reaction such as edema (swelling), itch, inflammation (redness), and watery eyes.

Decongestants relieve congestion by narrowing (vasoconstricting) blood vessels. They reduce mucus formation and redness.

Ophthalmic antihistamines and decongestants may be used for the treatment of hay fever, allergic reactions, and red eyes not caused by a bacterial infection.
