For Hyperthyroidism "I got prescribed methimazole for Graves' disease. Took the medication like I was supposed to, and everything seems to be fine except for some side effects, which are hair loss, weight gain, and sweating. But I do wonder if there is another medication they could put me on so I could lose more weight."

For Hyperthyroidism "I love and hate methimazole. I love that it effectively keeps my flu-like symptoms, mood swings, and anxiety attacks under control. I hate that I let this drug get me so sick just because it was “the lesser of two evils” for so long. Two months after starting a low dose of 5 mg, I started getting regular lower abdominal pain, dizziness, muscle pain, and peripheral neuropathy. Now, seven years later, my body has finally said enough. I am so nauseous and dizzy and anxious I can’t go out of my house. I have swollen glands in my neck that are painful, and I pee all night long. My recent symptoms have gotten much worse lately, and I’m getting my thyroid removed soon so that I can get off this drug. Praying whatever drug I’ll need to be on next will at least be a little better than this."

For Hyperthyroidism "I suspect there is a fair bit of selection bias in these reviews, as people generally only feel compelled to write one if they've had a bad experience. Thought I'd share my 'average' experience with methimazole to balance it out. I have been on methimazole for four years with no side effects whatsoever. It does the job, as evidenced by my regular blood draws, and keeps me alive. If there is one problem I have with methimazole, it is that I frequently forget to take it because I forget I am even on it."

For Hyperthyroidism "Methimazole caused me to have extreme itchy skin all over my body. Another side effect I experienced was pins and needles. I had a full thyroidectomy 3 weeks ago, and I still suffer from those symptoms a little, but it’s controllable now."

For Hyperthyroidism "I was on 30 mg/day methimazole for 6 months for amiodarone-induced hyperthyroidism. This dosage hardly moved the TSH level, just 0.03 mU/L to 0.05 mU/L compared to the normal range of 0.27-4.20. My doctor recently increased the dosage to 60 mg/day and will test the mU/L after 6 weeks. The side effects I notice are loss of taste, loss of weight, and being very weak with a loss of balance. But more seriously is the Afib and high pulse rate. I started a beta blocker, and that reduced the pulse rate to normal levels but did not help the Afib."

For Hyperthyroidism "On 10 mg, this is my second week. In the first week, I started to notice headaches at the front of my head/forehead, and I take it at night before bed. I drink tons of water. I do get itchy a lot, but these headaches are ridiculous."

For Hyperthyroidism "I’ve been recently diagnosed with Graves’ disease last year and have been on different doses of methimazole. 15 mg sent me into hypothyroidism, so now I’m on 10 mg. I have gained weight and feel some mental heaviness too. I’m getting blood work once a month to find a healthy balance of this medication to my thyroid functions. Fingers crossed :)"

For Hyperthyroidism "I've been taking this drug for a week. The first week, I took it along with a new set of anxiety and allergy pills... and BOY, let me tell you, be careful driving while taking this pill. I was on the way to work in 8 AM Atlanta traffic and felt really woozy and dizzy in that traffic. I also was on an iced coffee binge that week, and it really upset my stomach. In addition to stomach pain, nausea, headache, and loss of appetite. I just recently found out I was hyperthyroid last October, and I battled back and forth with starting this medication. I honestly preferred the radioactive iodine based upon research, but my doctor advised this would be the best route for me to take. My symptoms have eased, and I don't suffer from as bad stomach cramps, nausea, and loss of appetite."

For Hyperthyroidism "On June 28th, my son took me to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. Turned out that I was having a thyroid storm. T3 was 22.8, T4-5.72, TSH-.015, b/p-185/95, hr-160. I was put on propranolol 40 mg 3x a day. One month later, back to ER with extreme swelling in lower extremities. T3, T4, TSH still the same. Had a thyroid uptake done. Was put on methimazole 5 mg 3x a day. I could tell the difference within a week. My shortness of breath was declining, I could climb stairs again, my bp and hr were coming down. Just had labs done, and they called me yesterday and said my T3 was down to 6.7, but the doctor wants me to increase the methimazole to 10 mg 3x a day. I don’t understand why because I feel 100% better and I am starting to do the things I couldn’t do for 2 months. My bp is 117/64, hr resting is 77, o2-96. I am happy on the dosage I am on. I don’t have any side effects. My appointment with the endocrinologist is in October."

Methimazole for Hyperthyroidism "Diagnosed with Graves' disease. My thyroid ultrasound was unremarkable. The biggest symptoms before starting 5 mgs a day were moderate itching, mainly at night. The very first night of taking it, all my skin itchiness issues were a thing of the past. First follow-up in 2 weeks. So far, so good."

For Hyperthyroidism "I’ve been on methimazole for about 2 months, taking only 5 mg a day. Recently, I have been getting low leg muscle pain and numbness of my toes on and off. Is this normal, or has anyone else been getting this?"

For Hyperthyroidism "This was my 2nd thyroid storm. I was again put on methimazole 30 mg and propranolol 60 mg. I'm miserable after 5 weeks. The doctor dropped the methimazole to 15 mg. I still have the burning feet but not as bad as before. Sometimes at night I feel like my blood pressure has dropped too much and even though I've checked it and it's usually normal, I'm terrified to sleep. I'm tired of my chest burning (not like a heart attack. Hard to explain). I'm tired of my feet burning."

For Hyperthyroidism "I have been taking methimazole daily for hyperthyroid for several months now. I do not know whether I have experienced side effects because I take another drug which also causes joint pain and inflammation. I was already experiencing hair shedding before starting as well, which I think has something to do with my thyroid issue. However, it has helped with the high heart rate that I was experiencing due to the hyperthyroid. Now, several months later, my blood test is indicating that my TSH is actually high, hypo. I will see what my doctor suggests from here."

"I have Graves' disease, and this medicine, methimazole, makes me euthyroid, but my stomach feels awful while taking it. I can barely eat, I feel nauseous and bloated. I can't find a lot of people with this side effect, though, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I thought it wouldn't have any effects other than taking away my hyperthyroidism..."

Methimazole for Hyperthyroidism "Third update, been on Tapazole for 6 months, initially 3 pills, then the last 2 months 1 pill. A week ago I got a skin rash on my arm, the doctor told me to stop the med for 1 week until the rash gets better and he will prescribe me something else. Today I got called by the endo and told to do a blood test to check levels again. I got a call from the hospital and they told me my T4 went from 25 to 100 and my T3 from 7 to 30. They asked me if I had any palpitations or any other bad effects, I said no. They told me if I feel anything, go to the ER right away. Of course, with this news, my heart went up to 135 palpitations, so I went to the ER. The doc at the ER called another endo and I got prescribed propylthiouracil and back to propranolol. I can't believe 1 week of this will take me from 25 to 100, not even when I got diagnosed with hyper it was 33 only. Appointment tomorrow with my endo, I think I'll go radioactive iodine. Too many side effects."

For Hyperthyroidism "I was diagnosed with Grave's disease in April 2017. I have been taking the medication for 3 years now. My hyperthyroidism symptoms have subsided, but more have risen. Cold sweats, nerve pains, muscle aching, loss of taste. My dosage is regularly changing. I’m ready for RAI. This medication is horrible."

For Hyperthyroidism "I've had hyperthyroidism for 4 years and went into remission. Now it came back. I lost so much weight and was feeling so sick without medication. Truthfully, I didn't want to get fat again. The last time I gained 15 pounds, it was horrible to lose, but the pills helped it go away. Now it's back. I felt so sick I took myself to my endocrinologist, and she put me back on again. It's been 2 weeks, and I'm starting to feel better. No more stomach symptoms anymore. It sucks to gain weight, but my heart palpitations have lessened, and I'm feeling normal again."

For Hyperthyroidism "Was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism about 8 months ago and been on Methimazole. First dose was 10 mg and now is 15 mg. It’s working, numbers look good, but the stomach pain and leg cramps are pretty bad. Didn’t know what was going on, but after seeing others with the same stomach problems, I’m pretty sure it’s the meds."

For Hyperthyroidism "I was started on methimazole about six years ago, at 7.5 mg daily -- which I was told is a low dose. I am being treated for hyperthyroidism caused by thyroid nodules. While this drug keeps my thyroid labs within normal range, I find that I am always tired during the day and have developed sensitive skin/rashes that I didn't have before starting it. While methimazole does control other hyperthyroid symptoms, it won't 'cure' the thyroid nodules. I just don't feel like myself on this drug, but I don't want to go through radioactive iodine treatments, either, which I've read can cause other cancers. Sadly, the endocrinologists I've seen only seem to care about the 'numbers' in your lab work and don't care about how you actually feel. I am also worried about the liver damage that methimazole can cause -- and don't think it's good to be on this drug for the long term. Scary."

For Hyperthyroidism "I went to the ER with heart palpitations. Got home with a diagnosis of hyperthyroid. My endo said methimazole would take 4-6 weeks to start working. Not true. I refused the high dose but still took 20 mg. Within 6 weeks, T3 and T4 were in normal range, TSH was virtually non-detectable, and antibodies started to drop. Methimazole does not give me problems at all. But I never had so many symptoms others are describing. Just my eyes are swollen. I can figure out how much methimazole to take according to my resting pulse. Also, it is better to take every 8 hours rather than twice a day. It prevents waking up with totally swollen eyes. My endo thinks going hypo is better (maybe easier for her). I can tolerate the hyper symptoms better than what I read about hypo. Lost 20 pounds and watch it not to gain. Lost muscle mass too, so I pump iron to gain that back."

For Hyperthyroidism "I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease and started taking 10mg per day of Methimazole. After 4 weeks, I was definitely feeling better, my resting heart rate was back to normal, no more heart palpitations, and I could run again. However, my TSH is still below normal, but my T3 and T4 have improved. I will do blood work again in another 4 weeks, which will be after 2 months of treatment. The only side effects I noticed after the first few weeks of taking Methimazole were pain and redness on top of both of my feet, very weird, and I was having pain when I swallowed, and it felt like I had something in my throat, thinking it was heartburn or acid reflux, but meds for that didn't work. It went away after a day."

For Hyperthyroidism "This is my 4th update. I went to the endo, and he told me to do RAI because if tapazole gave me a rash, other meds probably will do the same. So, on Feb 2, I'll take iodine and the 3rd scan to see how much iodine my thyroid absorbed. So, on the 4th of Feb, I will take the RAI. My endo said it will take a small amount that he doesn't need to get rid of the entire thyroid, just enough to keep normal levels and that probably I won't need synthroid. I think this is for the best. I stopped tapazole on January 15th because of the rash on one arm, but my legs were itchy too. The sensation of itchiness on my legs finally stopped, but my left arm started itching too. I scratched a bit, so now I have a bit of a rash too. The first 4 months of tapazole were okay, but after that... dizziness, stomach pain, and rash started. They lower the thyroid levels fine, but the side effects are too much."

For Hyperthyroidism "My 6-yr-old daughter and I have been dealing with this medication for 2 yrs now, and now that she is off of it and getting ready for the surgery, she has been wetting the bed at night and also getting bloody noses. Is this normal for this medication? I am at a loss here. I need to help my baby, but I don't know how. Doctors are saying that they don't think it's from this medication, but I really think it is."

For Hyperthyroidism "I found out I had Graves' disease in December 2020. I have been on the medication for about 2 months. Since being on the medication, I have been having allergic reactions out of nowhere. Started with wheezing, then coughing, almost like cold symptoms. I got a breathing test done, and it was negative. Could I be allergic to methimazole? I have always been very healthy and not sick often at all. Now I am wheezing and coughing more often."

For Hyperthyroidism "I have Grave's disease causing hyperthyroidism and was on it from May to Oct. I have the tooth sensitivity issue really bad. Why don't the doctors and dentists know? I gained ten lbs back. I could stay up all night. But I think it helped that I exercised an hour each day. I'm off for only four days and now I'm tired and achy. I'm also on Toprol. My TSH is over now and my T4 is too low, but my Endo took me off of the methimazole for now. I'm happy about this because I don't like drugs. My hair is falling out and the texture is actually getting straighter. I think I had some other side effects, but I can't remember. I felt so horrible for a year, so at least I know it's Grave's disease hyperthyroidism... and not GCA or vertigo. It's been hell, so do the drug even a little. But sore throats should be reported immediately along with fevers. In May, I was on ten, then 20, then 30, then ten due to liver damage, then ten, now off in Oct."
