For Constipation, Acute "I started to take this the way it says on the label, 15 mL twice a day. It did nothing for me other than cause terrible, vile flatulence. The smell was like a sewer, and zero relief. Annoyed after about 3 days, I decided to take more. So I took 60 mL in one. Within 2 hours, I had had a bowel movement. In the end, all that came out was liquid. There seemed to be less flatulence also. I find it’s sort of unpredictable when you take it day and night, you may or may not have a movement the next day. Or you might, and it might not be satisfactory (could be very small, still feel like you need to go after), which is very almost upsetting really when you know what it’s like to suffer so much from constipation. The flatulence ends if you take it for a few days, it’s as though your body needs time to get used to it. If you’re going to use this, use it on a day when you don’t need to be anywhere or meet anyone! Take the 60 mL and take it with a warm drink to help it along."

For Constipation, Acute "My doctor prescribed a bottle of this 45 ml twice a day. Had very little effect on me, just a few tummy rumbles. The doctor then decided I was partially impacted and prescribed Movicol 3 times daily. Did clear the impaction after 8 days. Now use lactulose 30 ml twice daily after my IBS diagnosis. Keeps me reasonably regular."

For Constipation, Acute "I suffered from iron deficiency, and I was put on iron tablets. With these, they cause constipation, so my doctor also prescribed lactulose. It works really well, and it gives you a lot of gas and a bowel movement within eight hours of taking the medicine."

For Constipation, Acute "I occasionally use this lactulose for severe constipation, most often caused by drugs. I don't find it works straight away. I have lymphocytic colitis and IBS-D, so my gut is very sensitive. Yes, lactulose is effective, but very quickly the frequent farts become smelly and toxic. I stay away from people because of it. Over a few days, farts start to expel little bits of poo, and I soil my pants. I become too frightened to fart when out. I also can't tell the difference between a fart or a poo, so I have to go to the loo every time, just in case. Bit of a nuisance when it turns out to be just a fart. For those without lymphocytic colitis and IBS-D, it's probably fine. Don't be put off by my experience."

For Constipation, Chronic "I have been using lactulose for chronic constipation for three years. It is very effective. I now find that the sweet taste is making me gag and/or vomit. There are times when just looking at the bottle invokes the nausea. I have mixed in other liquid so I can't taste it, however, I can't take it anymore. Any wise ideas?"

For Constipation, Chronic "I passed gas and a bit of abdominal discomfort the first time I took this med, but the side effect of the second time is worse. Although defecation occurred one hour after I took the med at a 10 mL dose only, I experienced painful bowel cramping that lasted for hours into early morning."

For Constipation, Acute "4 days of suffering, nothing was coming out of me despite 30 times of trying, also had a lot of pain at my kidneys. I had all the fiber foods, drank gallons of water, but nothing!! One of my friends suggested loose syrup, which I drank 40ml. Finally, I felt some pressure, took my chance, but the size of the tool was so wide that my body was undersized. What came next is graphic, but I literally had no choice. I had to manually clear some of the hard stool out of my butt. Passage still felt super small for the huge train, but I had to push it so hard, it felt like I was giving birth as it exited me. What followed the impacted stool was runnier, and everything was just free-flowing. This is a super painful experience, and I now understand what others go through. If my experience could be of any help, the medicine is for sure effective, but it took 8+ hours to show results with a lot of my own efforts to make it work."

For Constipation, Chronic "It doesn't work for relieving constipation and causes severe cramping. I suffer from IBS, and the medication did not work at all. I would not recommend it if you have any bowel disease."

For Constipation, Acute "I suffer from endometriosis, and for the past 5 years, I've been prescribed codeine on and off when I have my flare-ups, which are roughly only 4-6 times a year. I'd always been prescribed laxatives that weren't very helpful with my constipation - they either took too long to work, and I'd be in pain for a few days, or they didn't soften the stool enough, so when I did finally pass a motion, it would be extremely painful. I discovered lactulose 5 months ago when my mum bought me some from a pharmacy, and it has been a lifesaver! I only take it when I haven't passed a motion in a few days, and every other home remedy I do (kiwifruit and prune juice, increased water, exercise) hasn't helped. It works within 1-2 hours, and it softens the stool enough so that I feel like I'm passing a normal motion, and it's virtually painless. I highly recommend this! It's the best laxative I've ever come across, and I've had my fair share of trials of different laxatives in the last 5 years."

For Constipation, Acute "Lactulose does not work at all. I got it in the ER and was told to go home and continue taking it. I finished the whole big bottle days ago and still nothing. Before the lactulose, I tried all the over-the-counter pills, psyllium husk, Fleet enemas, suppositories, magnesium citrate, etc., for 2 weeks. It's now approaching 3 weeks and still nothing. At least the mag citrate made me gassy, and I felt belly rumblings like there was something trying to happen, but with lactulose, no gas, bloating, nothing happening at all."

For Constipation, Acute "If you are at all sensitive to sugars, beware. What it was supposed to help just made it 1,000x worse. When I actually looked it up, I figured out why I was suffering. Was not a fun night, my poor dog, lol."

Lactulose for Constipation, Chronic "I was struggling to pass bowel motions, so I decided to seek advice from a pharmacy. They asked what medication I was on. I informed them that I took Gliclazide for diabetes and Allopurinol for gout. They recommended Duphalac. I have the following observations and advice. The leaflet recommended a dose of 15 - 45 ml. I chose 15 ml. Within two hours, I had a hypoglycemic episode and bowel motions that lasted over an hour, on and off. There was no warning of that possibility. Also, I noted that the plastic bottle container cap was not childproof! I do not recommend this product. AVOID."

For Constipation, Chronic "Constipation all my life. Until the hospital and my doctor prescribed lactulose, it is marvelous. Yes, the windy episodes do happen, but to go to the loo far outweighs the wind."

For Hepatic Encephalopathy "My Dr. said this would soften stool. Well, it does do that. Like liquid water in a matter of hours. Stayed up all night on the pot with constant diarrhea and some seriously explosive gas, but I felt a lot better by morning."

For Constipation, Chronic "Haha, I am so laughing. You guys are funny. So mine is chronic for almost a year, after it started in the third trimester of pregnancy. It's never been an issue my whole life, I'm almost 40. I have tried everything you can think of. It works and then just suddenly stops working. Which most of the stuff gives such bad cramps. So I thought to try lactulose. Well, it's been day 3 with 15 ml morning and 15 ml night. I went twice, which is so little, and feeling it's not enough. Earlier, I took 40 ml and the gas, it's just gas."

For Constipation, Acute "After a week on codeine, I hadn’t gone to the toilet properly. Tried this before contacting my GP, took the max dose, and within 2 hours it had worked and cleared me out. Only downside is I can’t trust a fart!!! It said it would take up to 48 hours to work, but didn’t expect it to work as quickly. Feel much better and less bloated."

For Constipation, Chronic "I take 15 mls lactulose 2x per day and get no results. On top of lactulose, I also use Miralax and a high-fiber diet, including prunes and prune juice. I am lucky if I go once a week."

For Constipation, Chronic "The negative effects of this medication make it the worst I have ever experienced in 70 years of living! Abdominal bloating, incredibly painful stomach pressure, diarrhea, sweating, pressure on the prostate gland, and hardly any relief from constipation. Let the user beware!"

For Constipation, Acute "This worked well for me and relatively quickly too. I took my first dose at 2 pm, and by 10 pm, I was all cleared out and more comfortable than I had been for days. The process was comparatively painless, though not without its frustrations; literally hours of sitting on a toilet while a very slow but unstoppable molten flow issued from me! Other than a bit of a crampy and gurgly tummy, I suffered no side effects either. Before this, I had tried Laxido and Dulcosoft, both of which made me vomit within an hour of taking and gave me acute abdominal cramps. The taste of lactulose is much more palatable as well - it is very sweet, though could be diluted in juice or water if this bothers you."

For Constipation, Chronic "Absolutely brilliant. You must drink lots of water for it to work. Having been very constipated, my pharmacist advised 40 ml twice a day, but I only needed one dose at this amount. Would definitely recommend it."

For Constipation, Chronic "I have IBS-C, and it's slowly been getting worse over the years (I'm 26). I've tried everything from MiraLax to enemas. After two ER visits, I was prescribed 30 mL of lactulose. Well, I took one dose, and nothing happened, but that's because I didn't realize I needed to drink a boatload of water with it (you should drink at least 1-2 full cups of water after taking the dose). A few days later, I tried again, this time with a ton of water, and holy moly, did it clean me out. It wasn't painful; cramps weren't even that bad, just more like a lot of grumbling from my gut, and the more fluids I put in, the more my system 'cleaned house.' Sweet relief! My only qualm is the gas pockets afterward, which got a little uncomfortable, but at least I was able to go!"

For Constipation, Acute "I was prescribed lactulose for constant bloating and constipation, but the taste is disgusting and tastes so overly sweet (like drinking syrup). Apart from that, I find that it doesn't work as well at all, unlike the sodium picosulphate, which works instantly after 7 hours. This laxative isn't as effective at all, apart from that, it causes excessive wind, and they smell so bad to the point it's too disgusting to bear. Plus, I can't tell when it's a fart or a poo, neither is it scary to expel it in case I poo myself. TMI, I know, but it's true! I don't think it's as good for constipation, but it's good for wind. It also has not helped with bloating, as I still wake up bloated and have it all day and night."

For Constipation, Acute "I had constipation as a side effect of the Codamol I was taking. I was sore, and I’m a big dude. My stomach was solid all the way to the bottom of my ribs. I drank two mouthfuls of this stuff and had the best clear-out ever, must have been an hour on the loo over a three-hour period."
