I saw my gynaecologist who diagnosed a uterine polyp. Once that was removed my periods were much more manageable.
It’s worth checking with your gynae as until that was sorted I was always having to take iron because of anemia .
Hi! Sounds like we are all in a similar boat. I tried the IUD one time and had my cycle within 2 weeks and it came out! I was mortified and it did hurt a bit at the time. Do you all try the IUD method again? My period was just so heavy a clot brought it out during my cycle. I just feel like it’ll happen again. I am looking at the arm placement one. Any thoughts? Also, what do you all wear in the meantime tampons and pads like me? Or just one or the other? What’s the best?
I had the same issue. I had an endometrial ablation with great success. I was 41. Alas if you still want children it is obviously not an option. Hope you found a solution.
I was just diagnose with Massive PE in both lungs (origin unknown), 2 weeks ago. I'm 35 yo. I was prescribed with Xarelto right as I was starting my periods. I always was a heavy bleeder with clots in the first 2 days and bleeding usually lasts for 7 days. With Xarelto the clots were much bigger with sometimes clots blocking blood from flowing. It is more intense, but in my case lasted the same time, 7 days but with more bleeding and bigger clots. This is the only side effect for now, but I feel much better as the PE is healing. I'll be on Xarelto for 6 months, and possibly for the rest of my life. The doctor said that I could have a medical intervention (endometrium removal) to significantly reduce the bleeding. I'll wait for the clots to be completely dissolved in 6 months and I will possibly ask for it. I do not plan to have more kids (already have 2) so I do not mind the side effects about pregnancy.
If your doctor disregards your bleeding problems, seek someone else's help, they are not all douchebags doctors, some really wants to make our lives easier while preserving it, cause PE can be fatal, or cause other heart or brain problems that I do not wish to have.
I had a saddle PE on 10/17/21 and was in the ICU for several days. They gave me TPA, heparin then Xarelto. I immediately started having fist-sized menstrual clots and a week and a half later I was in the ER with a very low hemoglobin level and diagnosed with anemia. They stopped the Xarelto for a few days and I felt great, they re-started me back on it and I have felt like garbage ever since. Today is 2/15/22 and I’ve had a non-stop period since 12/30/21.
I live in Canada so I was given a hematologist appointment 6 months after my PE, this was the “soonest”. Every night when I take the 20mg, I’m waking up a few hours later with vaginal clots and bleeding, every single night. No sleep + low iron and constant bleeding, Xarelto is no joke. I’m only 30 and I’ve never felt more exhausted and defeated in my life.
I’m happy I found this post because I don’t feel so alone anymore.
Wishing everyone the best!

Hi,
I know this is a very old thread but I would like to add my experience for any woman looking at this later on.
I was diagnosed with my very first DVT in 2010 at the age of 30. I was prescribed Xarelto and told if I ever get another I would need to be on this medicine for the rest of my life.
Upon taking Xarelto, my period became an utter nightmare. I’m literally unable to leave the house for my 3 heaviest days because it’s guaranteed I’ll have an accident. I spoke to my doctor about it who casually dismissed it as nothing. But it’s gallons of blood I’m losing on a period. I’m anemic now and taking iron. Once my DVT was cleared, I quit taking Xarelto all together. (They say you shouldn’t just stop but I did because it’s my health and I’m no experiment for drug makers). I got several more DVTs over the years and each time I’ve had to be on Xarelto.
After each DVT cleared, I’ve stopped taking that medication.
It’s been about 4 years since my last DVT and the thing they don’t tell you is your period never goes back to normal. It’s like once it’s thinned out you’re stuck with this heavy watery cycle full of clots. No one ever tells you that. I think this medicine does more damage to women than it helps. And it’s a disabling condition for a woman using this medication. No one understands that you can’t leave the house or you’ll bleed out all over the place. It’s basically made me disabled during my cycle. Jobs don’t understand. Schools don’t understand. There is no protection for us under the disability act and no one to help. As a person who has been on and off of this medicine for over 10 years, they need to be sued. I’m so frustrated that a medicine that was supposed to save my life has had such a negative effect on my quality of life. I’m a prisoner to my period because of Xarelto. I’m waiting on the class action lawsuit.
46 Years Old. Perimenopause, with horrible heavy clot filled periods before starting Xarelto. I had to go on the blood thinners due to going into AFIB. I went into afib due to the stress my body is going through on a monthly basis because of the perimenopause. I.E. Horrible periods, with the cycle before last, continuing for 49 days. I am not anemic (probably due to my heavy use of multivitamins and decent diet). So I am in a circle where my perimenopause is causing so much stress on my body that my heart can't keep up and goes into Afib. I got put on Elliquis which caused me to itch beyond my ability to stand, so they changed me to Xarelto. This is my first cycle since I went on Xarelto, and it is worse than my regular perimenopause cycles. WORSE clotting. WORSE Massive blood loss. Breaking into Cold sweats, flooding through clothing, horrible gigantic clots.
I am on day 8 of HEAVY, HEAVY Double pad, changing every hour mess and it doesn't look like it will slow down at any future date. I have attempted to call my DR twice today and been unable to get anyone to pick up the phone or give me a voice mail to leave a message. Will attempt to call again tomorrow. Given whats going on, I am hoping that the DR will skip all the "required treatments options" and go straight for a uterine ablation. This has been horribly depressing for me as I am an active person and have been unable to do anything since this cycle started. HORRIBLE pain... and just a mess. I had to even talk to my place of employment so as to not get a "busy" assignment for fear I would pass out. Why is this not discussed by the Dr's when they are suggesting this. Especially a cardiologist who seems to think my cycles are the cause of my afib?
I have been on Xarelto for almost two years and I am just now experiencing the same thing I have been bleeding since April 15 it is now the 30th
I am 36 yo on Xarelto since Dec 2019 due to PE in my right lung after an abdominal myomectomy.
My journey with Xarelto began with the starter kit. My first period Jan 13, 2020, I bled through 4 panties and 2 pants in 3 hours. I called the RN who recommended I go to the ER. My Hemoglobin was 10.6, in addition to other complications from the surgery I begged the Dr not to admit me as I had been in and out of the hospital since the surgery. The Dr. consulted with my surgeon and prescribed me Megace 40 mg 2x per day and I had to follow up with the surgeon the next day.
My surgeon OB/GYN provided these options: a) remove uterus b) medically induced menopause for 6 months c) IUD with provera 10mg 3x /day until bleeding stops then 1 x per day
I chose C the path of least resistance. The same day I had a Mirena consult and the next day the IUD was placed. The bleeding slowed down substantially, but never stopped. I was able to wear a panty liner for the drips changing just when I went to the restroom. My hemoglobin was 10.1 at this point.
Feb 2020, I knew it was period time as I had a heavier flow for 3 days then back to pantie liners. I went in for the 30 day check on IUD all good it was still in place.
Mar 2020 period a repeat of Feb. I did have another appointment with my Hemotologist in March with a full blood work up; he had no knowledge of the hemorrhage since I had not seen him since the day after I was diagnosed with PE. Thankful he is an excellent Dr who prescribed me IDA treatment which was 2 sessions of IV iron infusions. They were 1 week apart and 1 hour sessions (30 min for iv and 30 min of monitoring after) this instantly got my energy levels up and my iron to normal range
Apr 2020, period the IUD dislodged. I kind of forgot it was there so the strings as I’m in the shower freaked me out a little. I called the Dr. she got me in the same day. She teased why didn’t you take it out yourself. When I opened my legs funny the darn thing fell right into her hand.
We decided to see if I needed to get it put back in since I am suppose to come off Xarelto Jun 2020. This took place Friday afternoon, that night blood clots that filled both hands poured on my pad. I held off sat&sun to talk to Dr again so we can replace the iud (with covid-19 I am not going to the hospital unless I’m near the light & I’m not there even with all the blood loss) be mindful I just completed 2 iron infusions so my levels were normal before the iud dislodged. I know my body and I experienced this before so I know the signs of running too low on blood. Do NOT go more than 4 hours with changing your pad more than 2 times in two hours. You need to go to ER immediately.
Long story short, I’m still bleeding like crazy. I take 40mg of Megace (which doesn’t seem to help). I don’t know how much more uterus lining is there to fall off as I am losing so much blood. I don’t even have to change pads all the time as I literally feel the clots coming down most time I can get to the toilet in time to let them fall right in other times they fall on the pad and I can flick them in the toilet without messing up the pad. It’s a lot!!! Glad we are on lockdown because I can not do much of anything with the amount of blood clots and yes I still ruin panties and pants a few times a day as it is difficult to keep up.
The IUD goes back in tomorrow and I expect it to stay til jun 2020 when I’m off Xarelto. You are not alone in this journey.
I am so glad I found this thread!! Very comforting to know other women have been going through the same thing.
I’m 27 and have been put on rivaroxaban for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. I was warned by the hospital that i could get heavy periods. I stressed that my periods are already fairly heavy but they said it should be okay.
4 days into the most hellish period of my life, soaking through super plus tampons with pads underneath every hour or so, having to get up 2-3 times in the night to change. This morning I sat crumpled on the toilet for maybe an hour with the worst cramps, passing the most scary looking clots. Just sat there in tears to be honest! Luckily it’s Christmas so I’m at home but I dreading being in this situation at work.
Seeing a haematologist in a couple of weeks but I might try get an earlier appointment with a gp. Finding the whole experience miserable, especially with the whole AF diagnosis at age 27.
Thank you to everyone to all the women who have contributed to this thread! Has helped put my mind at ease
Unfortunately it seems to be an ongoing thing. I have noticed the date of mine changes by 2 weeks on Xarelto. My theory is that the period stops being the loss of an already stored uterine lining and it just bleeds straight out instead of lining the uterus. So the period changes to around the time of ovulation when it would normally just be being stored. Because the blood being lost is thinned it comes out at a ridiculous rate, causing clots and it tends to cause iron deficient anemia. Symptoms of iron deficient anemia are weakness, shortness of breath, chest pain, etc. Like much of modern medicine, it fixes one problem extremely well but breaks something else in the process.
Read all the post to get your answer. IUD if it doesn’t stop in a couple of months has been helpful or switching med. talk to your doctor. Read the past post. Good luck!
I started Xarelto last week and at the same time my period started. I have been passing so many clots its crazy!! I am so amazed by all these comments dating back to 2014. First why has no one told women how risky these contraceptives are. A week ago I was in hospital because of large clots in both lungs and the cause was Yaz. Now I find out that the treatment Xarelto also has hectic side effects, besides heavy cloty periods, Xarelto increases your risk of getting viral infections like flu. This is a lot... I have flu, clots in my lungs and a bunch of other clots coming out of me. Wish I never took those Yaz pills...
I am unsure of how to answer this question as to I am too stumped. This is difficult for me extremely. I was placed on Xarelto recently for DVTs in the hospital. That’s not the hard part. What bothers me is the period in general. I have been anorexic for 16 years and I have not had a period in five years. I still fall under the category of of severely underweight so the fact that I have one at all I haven’t the slightest clue. Then suddenly it feels like hurricane katrina up in here. I don’t know what to do or how to handle it etc. With all of my other medical issues I feel like everyone in the medical profession already views me as a hypochondriac (that labels bothers me enough to not always seek out help when it may be needed and then I get lectured to over holding out) so thus I cannot truly trust that they will be able to do anything other than say “stop being hysterical”. Also I’m 26 years old.
I was on tri-sprintec before all of this happened. I made it four days before a length lengthy hospital stay became life for the next month and so I wasn’t on it while in there. The DVT was completely septic related. I have no clotting disorder issue other than the ones caused by this medication. My big brother gets married on Saturday and I’m not even able to participate because of everything that has happened. I’m definitely not the crazy bridesmaid, just most useless and listless.
If any Dr. tells you to stop being hysterical, it’s time to get another Dr. I am in my 50’s and have had my share of every eating disorder you can think of. And one without a name. Please take care of yourself. Meditation really helps. Woman’s bodies are crazy. So many things can make our periods start & stop. Get a caring female OB/GYN. Male OB/GYN delivered all my babies. I got older & only wanted female OB/GYN’s. Which I would have made the switch years ago. And PMS is a monster that can make you feel out of control. See a therapist for your eating disorders. You don’t need to be ashamed. One minute at a time.
Also an IUD should help. Talk to your OB/GYN.
