It may be something called scabies.
Hi. I have the same problem. I have been itching for 2 years now, all day. It started with by legs and now my arms. I see dermatologist, but with blood tests and 2 biopsy no solution. I am destroying my skin in the process. I am scheduling an appointment with an allergist to see if that will work. Sorry you are going through this. I know how you feel.
My husband has suffered with a terrible itch for years. Gone through the whole gamut of creams and ointments. Finally quite by accident we discovered a small daily dose of prednisone keeps the itch away. Doctors don't like to give it to you because of side effects. But why have a medicine that works if you can't use it?
I have actually just starting itching last night. It kept me up all night. I was exhausted at work today so I left early. Beforehand I stopped at Walgreens to buy some Benadryl thanks to reading everyone's stories and comments on this website. THANKS BTW. Well first and foremost I have been just a tad bit itchy in the past but I would just scratch it and forget about it - it was not a real issue. Up until last night I was freaking out, I tried to think of anything and everything of what it could have meant or to why it was happening. And all odds ruled out. Not to mention I am self diagnosed with anxiety and a bit of paranoia. I don't know if it worsened because of it. Just thinking about it makes me itchy now. I took 4 Benadryl since 830am, I hope it doesn't happen again tonight. I don't know why this is happening so I need help figuring it out before it becomes a serious issue. Anyway I will keep this updated. Thanks for sharing everyone!!!
I itched for 12 years, allover, every day, with a rash. The pruritus was especially intolerable around the nose and mouth and inside the eyes. I eliminated the dairy and I haven't itched since. Try. Dairy allergy affects million of people, who have no idea, just like I didn't.
I have recently had the same problem with itching all over my body. I think that even my hair itches. It has recently gotten severely worse. I have to scratch everywhere, even my nose and ears. I scratch so severely that I bruise my skin and in some places even bleed. I have been taking Benadryl at night, but doesn't seem to help. Even my eyes itch. I have recently been diagnosed with hepatitis (not A, B or C). Apparently this is a generic diagnosis when there is an infection or inflammation of the Liver that cannot be identified, thus cannot be treated. In any case, I cannot take any medications that can affect the liver or urinary tract. Since the doctors have been unable to clarify the hepatitis issue, they are now looking at pancreas and gallbladder. Most of this got worse after I was prescribed Lipitor, and after taking it for about 2 weeks, I was taken off it, so now I'm not taking any statin drug to lower cholesterol.
I have diabetes, but have been taken off Janumet, so I am now controlling my out of control diabetes with just massive doses of Lantus. I still take Exforge HCT, and 82 mg aspirin, and Benadryl. I guess there just isn't any relief for someone in my health condition with this symptom of severe itching all over all the time.
Did you have any unsafe physical relationship?.
Your histamine levels may be off! I am female with Lichen Sclerosis but my gyno said that it should not cause the itching in my scalp and other extremities. I am taking a generic Claritin once each night. So far it has been three nights and no itching. I am going to take it each night for 1 month and see if that helps!! I remember a time when my husband had itching and a rash that kept coming back. He went to our GP who told him his histamine levels were too high and suggested Claritin once a day for 1 month and it cleared it up. I have no rash just the intense itching that keeps me awake at night but not since I started with WalMart's version of Claritin. Good Luck
I am 16 years old and experiencing the same exact thing. I'm absolutely miserable. What did you do to get over this?
Drug withdrawals can frequently be the cause of itching, but that is typically an around the clock presentation. Using Benadryl, hydralazine, and other histamine blockers for extended periods is a horrible idea-and dangerous for the elderly due to sedative effects and falls-hydralazine is also frequently used off label for anxiety treatment. Itching related to kidney disease usually present as salty plaques, especially in the lower legs spreads to arms then torso with progression of the kidney failure as the body gets rid of what the kidneys can't by pushing it out through the skin. Scabies cause a rash.
Look into 1- Demodex mites-these are spider mites that are NOT visible to the naked eye-very common, more prevalent the older you get-usually on the face and eyes but can be anywhere. They move at night due to preference for dark more than preference for certain hours so itching around genitalia may be more of a constant than areas of the body exposed to light-they travel up to 10mm/hr so you feel them, you scratch, they burrow down to the follicle. If you're thinking this could be your problem you can find relief with coconut oil and/or tea tree oil but be careful with the strength of tea tree as it can be harsh. Coconut oil is awesome but be careful on your face as it can og pores and cause acne if used too often-olive oil, castor oil and several others offer anti-bug, antibacteria, and/or anti fungal properties-sensitive skin does well with oils but sometimes it's a game of trial and error-side note:oil is great for oily skin, check it out before you ruin your body taking accutane or antibiotics. Depending on how bad the infestation is and whether your immune system is healthy will determine if you can deal with this on your own or if you're going to need prescription treatments.
The other thing I haven't seen mentioned ...
2-systemic fungal infection-garlic clove guy, I bet this is your problem since it helped. Do you have athletes foot, jock itch, or ringworm or a history of? Warm up the itchy spots with a hair dryer-careful not to burn yourself, it doesn't require all of that, just some warmth-be in a room with good lighting and look for rings, halos, semi-circles-they're a light pink or yellow color (this trick only works on light skinned folks, darker pigment sometimes will work with a black light but not in exceptionally dark skin). This doesn't always work and no circles doesn't mean no fungus, it's just something to try. Circles don't always mean ringworm, most fungi grows in a circular pattern and you need a doctor to listen draw labs, and treat appropriately-these lazy docs have now contributed to drug resistant fungi.. the most important thing is to find a doctor that will listen and critically think. Misdiagnosis can lead to worsening symptoms, especially if he gives antibiotics as these will promote a better environment for the fungal infection to grow. This is a serious issue and can be dangerous if not treated and treated appropriately.
Things to help with itching: Sarna AND Cetaphil-they do different things and you can mix it up, use both, or figure out if just one gets the job done to try and save some money. Natural, cold pressed oils-research it, they're amazing and cheap unless you get hooked on how amazing your skin will feels. Oatmeal baths. Nizoral, Selsun Blue and other sulfonamide shampoos-head to toe, let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse and moisturize well after. Drink tons of water. Include raw garlic, apple cider vinegar, olive oil and other beneficial foods in your diet.
Good luck, I hope this helps!
I to suffer from whole body itching, it starts when I first get in bed and continues through the night, I get about 3 hours sleep at night.
I'm on many different meds for failed back surgery, chronic nerve pain and trigger finger, I've been on the meds since 1998 and know they are not causing the itching problem because I have suffered with this on and off for 30 years and am now fed up with it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It may be the cause of something called scabies my younger siblings first started itching everywhere and then I started itching and it only was at night mostly, sometimes during the day and it feels like it's a kind of moving in different spots so we went to the doctors and they told us it was scabies the first ones who got it started having like a bumpy dry skin rash but I didn't neither did my other sister.
My personal experience went on for years. I couldn't figure it out. I am in great shape and I eat very well. I noticed if I drank too much or ate meat prior to sleeping it really made me itchy. Basically what it all boiled down to was the fact that I had gallstones. My gallbladder was full of them. So when you eat meat or drink too much it made me secret more bile. Since the bile had no where to go it was sent through my blood stream and kidneys. Which will make you extremely itchy especially at night. Try eating no sugar and fatty foods for one day and see if you itch as much. If you do not itch as much than you have a lot of gallstones. Warning do not remove your gallbladder. Prepare yourself for a a liver cleanse. PLEASE BE PREPARED. If you do it properly you will get rid of all your stones naturally. Google liver cleanse and find the one week one that prepares you. Apple cider vinegar and apple juice dissolve stones and help them move through your body.
Stones are not really stones they are balls of rubbery cholesterol. Google apv for gallstones. Malic acid which is what is in apples. Most importantly for easy passing is Epson salt. Have it ready in case you start to feel mid back pain etc. Epson salt relaxes your muscles especially inner muscle so they will pass painlessly. You have to drink some and it doesn't taste great. I have finally been able to sleep peacefully at night since I passed my stones. Good luck and all the best.
I felt that I had to share this because I was going absolutely crazy from the itching. Believe me it gets better after you cleanse your gallbladder and liver. Your liver is the filter of your body so when it is clogged and too busy fighting other things waste will pass through your kidneys and blood stream, making you react to toxins which make you itch. This is my first time blogging so forgive me if I am not very specific. I hope this helps because I never took any pharmaceuticals which led me to believe that my body was telling me something.

I think you may be right. I'm going to try it
Hi, please do consult a top expert on this. I once suffered the itching problem not the whole body, mind you. The solution generally is a cream or lotion which might be prescribed for 3-4 months.
I suffered severe itching on arms back neck and shoulders for years. I was tested for everything excma allergies etc. itch creams do not work antibiotics do nothing and itch creams do nothing. Try cold press or ice packs on the areas that itch. Try tell yourself that your not itching when you are. Sort of like soldiers who ignore pain when in pain. Get a dry skin ointment for dry itchy skin not a cream a greasy ointment. I've tried a million creams but I found ecoderm ointment great to help as well.
Dermatologist is your best bet to figure out what is causing it
