When its prescribed might be a good idea
I have been on Zoloft for 4 weeks today. 2 weeks at 25mg, and 2weeks at 50mg. I am taking it for anxiety and depression associated with divorce. I have been taking Zoloft in the mornings, and I am noticing a definite daily cycle. I feel very anxious, sleepy, tremors etc in the morning but by the afternoon I am feeling more calm and composed. My doctor has suggested splitting the dose 25mg morning, and 25mg in the evening, and if that doesn't work try a higher dose. I am yet to try this but it might be an option for others.
I had the same problem and just switched to evening and it really helped. My doctor said it was better in the morning, but not for me.
If the Zoloft is causing you to feel that way, it is perfectly fine to take it in the evening. Actually, as long as you take it around the same time every day to keep a constant bloodlevel, you will be ensuring that the medication is doing it's best for you.
I have not started my zoloft meds yet and I'm super nervous about it. But I'm definitely going to give it a try. I was told by the pharmacist it could make me sleepy at first but then it could change within a few weeks or so to make it hard to sleep. And to start it on my weekend so if I am sleepy I can rest without having to be up early. And that I should prob start it at night but may have to switch it later on to morning if it starts keeping me from sleeping. He said you will know yourself because everyone is different.
I just started Zoloft approximately a week ago. After getting off Effexor. My Dr prescribed 50mg to take in the morning. All I do is sleep the day away watching Netflix. I want to do my usual activities like go the gym. Also need to be motivated and the energy to shower daily. But, I'm just too darn tired! I'm definately switching to nights despite the crazy dreams. I took the anti depressants to get me out of this horrible depression and to get me going not lay around like a cow in pasture. I will give this some time. Hopefully I will see some improvement with my moods.
Ya know ... I took a diet pill and felt like a million dollars, mood lifted, energy etc., I don't know why it has this effect but I sure wish they would put a little of this in my anti depressant...
Hi, I too have just been prescribed Zoloft after being on Celexa for years.. I felt Celexa was not working like it did to control my chronic depression. I'm also fearful of the drowsiness Zoloft may cause me; I do have to try and work through the day and drive back and forth. I plan on taking it in the evening and go from there. How have you been on Zoloft so far? thank you.
I have been taking Zoloft for 15 years. I take it in the morning. It has made it difficult for me to lose weight (I put on 20 lbs within a month of going on it) and worst of all it has effected my sex life. It is almost impossible to have good sex since I’ve been on it. I stay on it because it does work great for anxiety. I have tried others but the side effects were even worse!
MaryAnn i have been experiencing anxiety for 3 weeks now i tried controlling them on my own but i think due to my living and life changes it would not allow me to, so i have been resting alot and trying get back into my routine, however i have been prescribed zoloft never taken any antideppresants in my life, and well im one week in been taking it in the eveving? but some days i feel better than the other is this normal? I have a hard time sleeping at night, so you recommend when is the best time to take zoloft, i am on a small dosage only taken 25mg to start out with. Any advice would great. I am new to this and i just want my anxiety to go away , is it safe to come off when i get back into my routine. Sorry for all the questions. Thanks, Cynthia :)
I had the opposite effect.Totally lost my appetite.
Take it one per day and the dosage will work better at night before sleep as is the case with most pills.
I take zoloft with oxcarbamzpine. I take it at night. I think its messing with my stomach. Maybe its my liver. The pain is for depression. My oxcarbamzpine is for my trigeminal Nuraglia.TN. Wake up with riddle pain from these medications. Any body have this on both medication?
I take mine right before bed. Then its not so bad if it makes me dopey.
Do you get dizzy on zoloft?
I just called my pharmacist and ask him about the best time to take Zoloft. I have been taking it in the am and the bottle said to take at bedtime. I had not noticed that on the bottle before. She said, whatever I was comfortable with. Some take it at night if it makes them sleepy. I don't get sleepy with it, so I am going to continue taking it in the am. So, I guess it works diff with everyone. I, too, have trouble sleeping. I have a sleep aid for night.
My husband takes Zolaft for bipoar depression, & always took it in the morning. After reading on thi site about all the problems people were having with it making them sleepy I talked him into taking it at bedtime. Now he is sleeping better, & more awake in the day as it should be, so good suggestions guys & gals...
I used to take it in the morning, but seemed like it was making me tired all day. So I switched to evening and now it seems like I can't sleep at all. I don't know what to do anymore??
I would recommend taking it at night. I was taking it in the morning and I was so tired I passed out in all of my classes and I felt sick to my stomach. At night I don't feel anything
The same thing is happening to my son. He is on risperdone and sertraline(Zoloft). I had been giving him his Zoloft in the am before he went to his program, and his productivity fell tremendously. He was sleeping on the job and in class. He asked to stop taking it last week and I agreed. He is 35. He had started to do better at the skill center already. I think I will try giving it to him in the evening and see how that works.
I've been on Zoloft for about 6 months, or more, cant remember. At first I was taking it at bedtime, then switched (due to insomnia) to half dose in a.m. and half dose at bed and still had insomnia. So now I take it all in the morning. I'm on 300mg. I've battled major depression, anxiety, and OCD forever, it seems, and Zoloft has been the absolutely best a/d of them all. Minimal side effects and I do believe it has taken the "very seriousness" out of my behavior and has allowed some "joy" to seep in through the cracks, if you know what I mean. On another note, I just found out I was approved for TMS at 2 sessions a week for 12 weeks. I'm so excited to try this out. Previously I did 11 sessions of ECT and that was absolutely horrible! To all of you reading this post - Dont ever do ECT!!! Maybe it works for some people, but I think for the majority it cuases worse damage than the benefits.
For me there was no benefits at all!
Anyway, sorry I got off track there! Good luck with your Zoloft. It didnt take me long to adjust to Zoloft and taking it at different times. However, I still have the insomnia... but also have a lot of stress in my life right now (taxes, bankrupcty... egads, hate it!!! ). Take care!!
Hi there. I'm considering going up from 150 to 200 sertraline. Can I ask did you find upping the dose caused more side effects?
Thanks from Nancy darling x
Hi, I know you posted this over 6 years ago, but just came across it when looking at the timing to take Zoloft (sadly for my son... ). Anyhow, I was wondering if you did TMS and how it worked for you? It's something I am considering. If you're doing better and no longer on here, good luck & God bless! Thanks...
My dr told to take Zoloft when it is best time for me, as long as I take it the same time every day. Good luck
I hope you're feeling better.Just read your answer.
I was just put on zoloft within the moth and both my doc and pharmasist agree that YOU take it when you are comfortable takeing it.everyone reacts differently... so if your body gets tired after takeing it in the morning try at night time like others said... just make sure whenever you take it be consistant. If you stillhave problems in a few weeks talk to your doc about trying a different SSRI that may have a different reaction with you,. Only thing is you have to give yourself and body a couple of weeks to get adjusted.

Hello dbrennan! I take Zoloft in the am but it does not make me sleepy. Nothing seems to make me sleepy! I wish there was something out there. You can also take Zoloft in the evening before bedtime if you prefer. If you have just started on Zoloft the sedation should go away in a week or so. I wish you the best! Sweetie Pie
Hey sweetie pie: I take 2-50mg of trazodone to help me sleep. I don’t know why but the 100mg doesn’t work for me ? Good luck
Zoloft and trazodone should never be taken together; there's a "major drug interaction" listed. Then again, I was prescribed Zoloft 15 years ago for "stress and anxiety" and 10 years later my doctor added alprazolam (Xanax), which ALSO has a "major" interaction listed! I took 25 mg in the morning and 50 mg at night; I was NEVER told I shouldn't split the dose.
AT my last appointment, my discharge papers listed "CHANGE how you take this medication" and yet we never discussed any changes! My lab work showed low blood sodium (SUPPOSEDLY dangerously low, even though I felt great); the doctor told me took quit my thiazide diuretic for high blood pressure even though "hypnotremia" (clinical term for low blood sodium) is a KNOWN side effect of Zoloft and the incidence DOUBLES when Zoloft and Xanax are combined! In less than 3 weeks my BP went from 110/68 to 168/99 and my blood sodium had DROPPED a point, and my doctor wanted to hospitalize me. Not wanting to suffer permanent, severe and irreversible brain damage from IV saline, I fired my doctor, re-started the diuretic, IMMEDIATELY cut my Zoloft dose by 25 mg and within DAYS my BP was down to 121/72! I'll be cutting the Zoloft dose by another 25 mg until I stop completely. Then I'll start weaning the Xanax.
Long story short, I will always have stressors in my life. Zoloft didn't do a thing for any depression, and the work-related anxiety I had when I started taking it is long over, as I got a new job more than two years ago. I now rely on exercise and weekly chiropractor appointments to cope with he stress of everyday life. :-)
Unless you have been told differently by your doctor maybe trying to take this in the evening or before you go to bed it might allow you to rest throughout the night and then work in your system throughout the day, anyway it something that you could try and if it doesn't work you could always change back. I do hope these effects either work better by you adjusting the time you take it or it may be such a thing that as time goes on your body will adjust to these side effects, I wish you the very best of luck!
