What side effects happen at each dose of 50,000 units of vitamin D?

I took my first dose of 50,000 units of vitamin (D2) this past Friday night. I was prescribed 50,000 units once a week for 12 weeks.
I experience adrenalin rush symptoms along with a little shakiness and insomnia. However once I fell asleep, I stayed asleep until I woke up abruptly feeling like I couldn't catch my breath and my heart pounding... I sat straight up in bed and violently coughed. It really scared me. After I calmed down all was fine and I was able to relax.
Now at 4 days later I just feel achy, a little nauseated, some stomach upset/cramps. I am finding myself a little scared to take the 2nd dose this friday night...
Has anyone had a similar experience? What can I expect after the 2nd dose? 3rd dose? etc.
Thanks so much for any advice you can give. ~ Capitola : )

I take my vitamin D 50000 iu in the morning after breakfast. I don't have stomach aches and I sleep really solidly throughout the night. My energy level has improved but I must take but d in the morning. Never at night because i couldmt sleep if I did.

I was also prescribed 50,000 IU of D2 twice a week for a level of 17, and was afraid of side effects. Admittedly because of that, I still haven't started this dose and instead have started 2,000 IU of D3 daily... I noticed I immediately started craving foods with magnesium (after the second day at this dose) so tonight I did a little research on the link between vitamin D and magnesium. (I'm usually in tune with my body and know what I'm lacking by what I'm craving). I found several articles that explain common perceived side effects to large vitamin D doses are actually symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Since magnesium is used to convert vitamin D (thus, gets used up when you're converting large doses of vitamin D), the articles suggest supplementing magnesium at the same time so that you don't become deficient in one while correcting a deficiency in the other. One source was the vitamin D council website, authored by a physician, so perhaps there's some merit to this? Thought I'd pass it along as one possibility.

I have only taken my first Vitamin D2 50,000 three days ago. So far I have had stomach pain every day since (last night was bad). I also have been constipated, which is highly abnormal for me. Not enjoying my first week, but I will continue to see how my body acclimates.

I am not a medical professional but I have been suffering from a D deficiency for a while now. The first time I noticed my joints ached and I was very moody and forgetful. I was not given this drug then. Now with the same symptom's I was given this 50,000 units and find that after my first dose I am a bit on the really achy side. I, however, am not having any of the other symptoms you seem to have. Perhaps you should speak to you doctor.
I do hope you feel better soon.

I also am taking the once a week Vitamin D prescribed by my doctor and i have not ecperienced nothing of what you all are saying. Maybe its a mind thing or you all are allergic to one of the ingredients listed on the bottle. Vitamin D like any other vitamin such as C, B12, should not have side effects.

The first dose of 50000iu D3 flared up my Microscopic Colitis, ie pain, diahhrea. So i have been taking 5000 daily. Just had my level checked but have not received the results... my last level was only 16 which was very deficient. So am hoping this has boosted it to an acceptable level of 30 and up. I got the colitis back under control and need to listen to my own ideas instead of Dr who doesnt really know me yet.

I felt a rush as well, it's allot to take at once, but our body needs such vitamins so it's definitely something worth taking. I also felt sick to the stomach so be careful to take the day to relaxation.

At these doses it is imperative that you take vit k2 to pull the calcium from the blood or it causes the problems encountered and described by most people here. Google Jeff T Bowles PDF The power of high dose vitamin D3. As has been mentioned D3 is actually a hormone and not a vitamin as is mentioned by Jeff in this PDF

Same exact thing happened to me. I don't take it anymore. I am on 5,000 daily and that is working well, but slamming the system with the 50,000 all at once was horrible. I drank a lot of water to flush it out of my system, and it was to where I couldn't even raise my arm to comb my hair. Didn't take anything for 2 weeks but now the 5,000 daily is ok.

I am choosing to try to improve my bone health ( I have osteopenia) the natural way, I am very active and also trying to get my supplements right. I was quite deficient in Vit D so my dr also gave me the Vit D 50,000 IU and i was afraid to take it. Good thing i didnt read all these before i did. This is the first day and I did not have any appetite for supper. That was it. Otherwise I feel fine. i have to take it once a week for 8 weeks and at that time we will retest the D level. My calcium level was very low normal. I also have Microscopic Colitis with steroid use to get it under control but am off it now. I attribute that and the illness i had to my bone condition although my mother had it. I was sick nearly 2 years and on Budesonide... with vomiting and diarrhea . I now am doing fine with that and also osteoarthritis. MY bone density was normal before that.

Vitamin D is actually not a vitamin at all, it's a hormone. From your symptoms, it sounds like you are experiencing anxiety as a result of the Vitamin D. This could be a result of a high dose of Vitamin D using a large portion of your Magnesium stores. Vitamin D needs magnesium to make it usable to the body. Magnesium is the 4th most abundant mineral in the body and is responsible for over 800 processes.
Do not take Magnesium Oxide - it does nothing.

I had a life-threatening emergency in April and was treated for iron deficiency after my hemoglobin came back dangerously low. Just had a checkup and explained to the doctor that I was still feeling "off." She did bloodwork, and while my hemoglobin/iron is still lower than normal, they said I have a dangerously low vitamin D deficiency. Likely a result of being on bedrest for weeks.
I was presecribed 50,000 units of Vitamin D, once a week. Took the first dose not quite 48 hours ago, with food. Felt a little off (again) yesterday, but figured I was just trying to get back into the swing of things at work. By last night my heart was racing and I felt a little shortness of breath.
Only slept 4 hours, and since I woke this morning, I've felt awful. Heartbeat seems normal. But, I'm achy and sore. To the point that a light touch of my skin is painful, like a giant bruise. Right now it's worse in my scalp (even brushing my hair hurts), neck, shoulders, back and upper arms. Though it feels like it's spreading further down my arms and into my legs. Just so weak.
Sorry to ramble... I'm just a bit freaked out, as I didn't expect a vitamin to make me feel this way. Don't have another dose until Sunday, but I'm nervous.
I know this is an older post, but I'm curious if anyone else has felt this way. 38, F, 5'3", 120 lbs if that maybe makes a difference. Thanks, in advance, for any advice.

This is exactly what is happening to me. I am wonder woman for a couple days then now every symptom you are talking about. Not nauseated, no cramps, I have already taken the 2nd dose so this saturday I will see. I am just a person not a professional. No sleeping but when I do its during the day and sleep hard. so I don't know will watch this. I am having tho which you didn't mention weakness in my arms. from my shoulder to my elbows it feels like the muscle is mush and when I touch it its very sore like a big bruise. I might not take the 3rd to see if that goes away, I am 66 but I have really strong arms and no flab for a woman my age. I use my muscles all the time but am finding that they are very sore only on my arms. And very weak even in my grip more so than before.

Please relax folks. Firstly 50,000 IU sounds like a big dose, but remember 1,000 IU of vitamin D is only 25 ug that's micro grams not milligrams. So 50,000 IU is just over 1mg, about 1/10 of a grain of rice in size. Most of the above symptoms are symptoms of anxiety, not vitamin D excess. Vitamin D accumulates so problems like hypercalcemia occur after taking over 50,000 IU daily for many months, not after taking one or a few doses. The only negative affect you could have from a single dose of 50,000 IU (other than the placebo or rather nocebo effect after reading or worrying about other peoples anxiety) may be a slight upset in the stomach if you are sensitive to the vegetable oil, gelatin or other components of the tablet or capsule. Check the research by Dr Michael Holick who has been studying and prescribing vitamin D for over 30 years. You can find a lot of his research information on Youtube.

You should be taking a high quality magnesium supplement when taking high doses of vitamin d. I also hope you are taking D3. Google it.

I just had my first prescription dose of 50,000 units ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2) and had a very bad reaction. I took it after my evening meal and by bedtime I had severe anxiety, racing mind, heart palpitations, and stomach cramps. Complete insomnia ... I never went to sleep all night. I am convinced after reading this forum that some people just can't tolerate that high of a dose. I never want to go through that again, I am still all jittery feeling. After talking to my doctor, i am going to wait 7 days and begin taking a smaller daily dosage.
