I am also on Prozac but just curious to know the dosage of Xanax. I am aware it starts at 0.25 but what is the usual recommended safe dose daily?
What is the daily recommeded dosage of Xanax for severe anxiety/panic attacks?

Hi, I have had what they call code red level 10 panic attacks they come out of no where and can last up to a 1 or 2 hours with me felling light headed or faint shakeing all kinds of bad stuff. For the last year now they have tried Prozac and many more but nothing has helped I take 0.5 my Xanax 3 to 4 times a day but some days I don't have to take any but on my really bad days 4.
I have a few questions..I’ve just been recently diagnosed with having anxiety issues..which I strongly believe are panic attacks my heart starts to race uncontrollably and I can’t function it’s really starting to effect my daily life work and home..I was prescribed a low dose of Xanax and I don’t like taking medications how exactly will it make me feel will it make my heart race fast because I hate that feeling will I feel better about myself and less panicky thoughts can someone help?!
No it will not make your heart race, in fact the opposite. You may feel a bit euphoric and possibly drowsy. I have been on Xanax for 22 years. Starting at .5 mg twice a day . 6 months ago I was up to 2 mg 3 times a day and temazepam 30 mg at bedtime for insomnia. I was then forced to find a new psychiatrist. Withdrawal from Xanax is the most horrific thing anyone can endure and can lead to death. I am mow on 1 mg 4 times a day with 15 mg of Temezpam at night. My body is still not accustomed to the lower dose but I find I'm able to function better. Use it responsibly for the shortest time and you'll be ok but never stop cold turkey.
Going on 4 months ago now I was put on Zoloft 100mg 1 time daily and started on xanax 0.2mg 1 time daily to treat depression and panic attacks. The xanax worked amazingly i was in a better mood, relationships improved, did better at work and stopped drinking whiskey everyday to cope. But in the last few weeks I've found that it isn't working very well so I'm thinking that maybe two a day would work better or go up on the milligram. I'm no doctor by any means but with such a fast acting med. once a day just doesn't seem logical to me. I would say a good start would be 0.5mg twice a day.
Hello the dosage of Xanax all depends on the persons tolerance to the drug, the severity of the anxiety, how long they have been on it, etc. It comes in four strengths: .25, .05, 1, 2 mg bars. The daily dosages can range from 1 to 10 mg daily depending on a number of factors. I take the generic of Xanax (alprazolam) due to anxiety from major depression. I take 1 mg four times daily. I find this is a good dose for me. Hope I have helped. best regards to you.
I suffer from terrible PTSD and various random things can trigger me causing a snowball of horrible, overwhelming distress. I am prescribed 2mg TID PRN. The xanax comes in little bar like dosages that are usually green or yellow and scored so I can break it into 4 pieces for minor issues if needed. I believe I've also had a few times the bars were white. I usually use a whole one to fall asleep to stop involuntary thoughts that keep me from sleeping. Then, throughout the day I usually break it in half (or smaller) if I'm having a trigger that hasn't gotten too far. Dosaging is based off of what is being treated and the severity of it. In my case, we've found the risks are much greater if I've taken my xanax all day then stick an ambien xr on top of it to sleep, so they keep me on the xanax for medical reasoning. It can also be used temporarily before surgery to reduce anxiety and for traveling if you might be afraid to fly for sedation purposes.
There are many reasons to use this drug and different dosages. It acts much, much faster than clonazepam or Valium and has a shorter life span but hits you hard as hell. Just putting it in your mouth to swallow it is horrible because it disintegrates so quickly. I hope this helped!
You are very wrong between the differences of Valium and xanax. For one, I am extremely surprised each time Valium starts working within 9 or 8 minutes, rarely even 7, and at full capacity right away. Xanax will be more like a slow 15 min, and both are taken with an 8 or 10 (or longer) hour completely empty stomach. True if panic attack is worse, Xanax does work faster and sronger. For muscle relaxant in jaw, neck, migraine issues, Valium works better. For terrible insomnia, I find both have different uses, Valium works a bit longer, while Xanax might initially make me feel more tired, but does not last long. I've used the maximum of both med, and also lesser doses. After 15 years I find Valium has lost its effects unless I don't use for 2 months or so. But is the best for tmj, bruxism, insomnia, and sleep pain due to all over uncomfortableness in all body parts lying down.
This all is while using multiple strong pain medicine for joint degenerative issues and with migraine med. Also, the ambien did work slightly but didn't make me actually tired! A needed treatment! a very weird med, and was told
To take my 10 MG Valium with the ambien at bedtime, all doctors were clueless cause every single patient had sleepwalking problems, eating odd things, a need to organize cabinets, thankfully I never drove to a food place, or the other major habit was pooping in basement or back of closets! The area of bread shut down was not studied well, and Valium plugs into receptors at gaba receptors while ambien only created an agonist effwct, so it but up in body differently, PLUS caused all our loved ones or spices or teen children NOT to believe the issues with it, so mode of use are now laveled TERRIBLE PEOPLE, just for WANTING TO SLEEP MORE THAN 2 HOURS A NIGHT!!! I am most upset at that one, none of these othwrs.
I have been on Xanax since 1985. If you suffer from anxiety, can do well on maybe 2 or less MG a day, However if you suffer from panic attack disorder, the mean dosage is 5 to seven MG per day.
I forgot to say that smoking can reduce your Xanax blood levels as much as 50% (source:: my son who is a Pharm,,, D and owns his own compounding pharmacy).
The daily recommended dose of Xanax is 3 times daily. The reason is that the half life of the drug is 4 hours but taking it around the clock every eight hours keeps it in your bloodstream.
The dose depends on you and your tolerance for the drug and the doctors try to give you the smallest amount possible. They will usually prescribe another anti anxiety non narcotic
the highest dose one person should take for long term use is 1 mg 3 times daily. 2mg doses are available and prescribed to some people. A few years ago the most abused drug in America was oxycodone. Now the most abused drug is Xanax. They are trying to solve this problem, so unless you have been on them for some time you probably won't get them prescribed to you now.
What is a non narcotic anexity pill???
I was on 2mg of Xanax 4 times a day and they told me That was the maximum dose
That is what I was taking for a full year. I am 22. It was the worst mistake I have ever made, even though I was told to take it
Wow thats a lot! I knew a women who took 9mg a day! I would never be able to function! I also take Paxil 20 mg and the two work together. My dose of Xanax is .50 twice a day, and a third one if needed. I have been on this since 1989. I'm doing fine
I take 2mg tab 3x day still have high anxiety
I think most people do not start off on a high dose it is when tolerance develops that the higher dose just feels like the lower dose then not like someone started on that dose! I hope that came across the way I meant it to.
I have been taking .5 mgs of Xanax for 12 years. Never more-never less
it has been a lifesaver for me . Until then I stayed home most of the time. Now I am able to golf, bowl shop , in short live an almost normal life. Also, after taking numerous anti-depressants I have found effexor xr to be the best. I only wish this had been given to me when my children were young. perhaps I shld write 0.5 mgs of Xanax Maryann 3
Hi Maryann how many times a day do you take your xanax
we have doctor out there that just will not prescribe Xanax, it in my opinion is a good drug and when taken as it is witten by the doctor it can be safe and yet effective. usually doctors will start at the lowest effective dose of 0.25mg and give it 3-4 times a day, I have been given 0.5mg 1 tablet 3-4 times daily and my current doctor says that short acting Xanax lasts about 4 hours and then you see anxiety come again she prescribes Xanax 2mg. Extended release tablets 1 tablet in the morning and one tablet before bedtime. as far as the literature say these drugs are safe with the drugs like Lexapro, Prozac, and the other SSRI's if you have any questions far better safe than sorry be sure and ask the doctor when you go in and see him
I take 1/2 1mg 4x day, it has helped me. I do worry about coming off it but had to have something. My doc put me on that dose, I also take Lexapro. Hoping when I get better can cut down on the xanax.
Thank you for your reply von-1
I'm hoping the same that when the prozac kicks in i'll be able to cut down on the xanax, but so far it's just bearly getting me through anxiety.
Best of luck with your meds
Yeah, its just barely getting me thru too! Good luck and keep me posted, I want to know how you do.
Yes i will do von-1
How are you finding the lexapro? Can i add you as a friend and we'll keep each other updated as to how we're doing?
I think the lexapro is starting to kick in some. I worry I depend on the xanax to much. If I can get to the point that I'm not dizzy I will be happy. I have a hard time going shopping out out at all. I'm ok as long as I don't get out of the car. My bp has been up lately, doc is out of town all this coming wk, will all him as soon as he gets back. Glad youare my friend.
How long are you on lexapro?I was on it,it worked at the start as i said before but had to change as it seemed to be making my anxiety worse plus had panic attacks like never before.I had to up xanax aswell to twice daily but i feel if they help me,why not take them?I do hope to come off once i start to feel better but its either not take them and be a nervous wreck-not going outside my house or interacting with people OR take them and try live life as normal as possible for me at the moment.
I started my 4th wk of lexapo today, have been on xanax since last July. Lexapro had helped in past but i wasn't this bad. I was working then and living a normal life. Nothing normal about me now and I hate this feeling because I was a very out going person, nurse for 25 yrs. Lots of friends always on the go and enjoyed it. Now I'm scared to get out of the house, its funny how that can happen in one day! I even have to have my husband sit in the batroom while i take my bath, scared I will pass out. I know he has a hard time too, i depend on him so much but thank the lord he has been really good. Our kids live pretty far away so its just us 99% of the time, hardley ever see anyone. Thanks for listening, sometimes it helps to just talk.
I've tried sending you private post but you'll need to add me as a friend first.
I completely understand where you're coming from.Anxiety is an awful thing i suffer extremely myself but found the xanax some relief.See how the lexapro goes, give it a few weeks and if you find it still is'nt helping, suggest to your doc that you'd like to change to another anti anxiety. No problem at all im here to listen anytime,it does help to talk and also to someone who knows what you're going through,so anytime-post away!
As for your husband he seems very kind and caring towards you, you're lucky he understands, but i know it must be a shock to have lived a fullfilled life then to get stuck in a rut, thats how i am.My life is my child and my house,i rarely go out and socialise anymore, its a constant battle to even go grocery shopping every week and communicating with people is very difficult.I was also a very out going person where as now i'm happy to stay in my house 24/7.Its a horrible situation to be in so i can relate to everything you're saying
I have been struggling tremendously with sleep. I typically take about .25 to .50 at bedtime as prescribed by my doctor and this usually helps me but lately as soon as I lay down to go to sleep I feel like my fight or flight response kicks in.. does that make sense to anyone? Its like I am afraid to even try to fall asleep. I went about four days with no sleep and ended up in the emergency room because my fiancé was worried about me... I kind of came unglued. I increased my dose last night to 1.0 but it still didn't go very well, could feel the adrenaline in my body and could not settle down. I am going to try running after work today to see if I can get rid of some of this nervous energy I seem to be producing. If anyone out there has the same problem I would love to hear from you. I am feeling a little crazy with lack of sleep. and I only take Xanax at night... maybe I should take it once during the day to calm my negative thoughts that are a result of this sleep deprivation... any thoughts?

doctors like to stay at the lowest possible dose that will be effective, if the 0.25mg dose does not work (taking it 3 or 4 times daily) then be sure and talk with him before increasing it, the next increase would probably be o.5mg one tablet 3 to 4 times a day. Xanax isa good medication and it usually works well I did have a friend who decided to increase the medication on his own, he ran out of medication too soon and the doctor had fear of addiction once it was out of his system then he suffered severe withdrawl he had increase it to 1mg--4 times a day, he went through the kind of time that is described as like being in (hades) so before making any increase just always be sure that this is OK with you prescribing physician... hope you feel better
Hey puckiemull,
According to the studies done, doses of greater than 4 mg a day, common in panic disorder patients, greatly increases the difficulty of coming off this drug. So I would recommend not taking more than 4 mgs a day and always take as little as possible so to avoid the possibility of addiction and difficulty when coming off this med.
You are probably not taking anywhere near 4 mgs a day, so follow the doctor's orders and you should be ok.
Hope all is well,
Laurie
Thanks Laurie
No im no where near 4mg a day, well 1mg twice daily but as i said in the posts before i dont know is it endo or what thats making my anxiety sky high or the prozac not kicked in yet but will give it time and see. Have app for the surgery at the end of the month so we'll see how that goes.
Thanks for reply,as i said im following doctors orders so i'm doing ok for now.
Thanks again
There is a surgeory for anxiety and or depression? Can you please tell me more about that?
No surgery for depression or anxiety. She was referring to a different surgery for another problem she has.
Dear friend... this site hast to start realizing that there is a huge difference between anxiety disorder and panic attack disorder... they both require different treatment protocols ... anxiety, much less Xanax... panic attacks, much more. It's a fact.
I have been on Xanax . 50 twice a day, and a third one if needed! I have been on this medication along with Paxil since 1988! This regimen has worked for me. I have never ever had to take more than prescribed and that is where trouble can begin if you take more then prescribed. It take me awhile to get used to taking the medicine but my panic attacks were so awful, they had to convince me to take the medicine because I didn't know how it would effect me! As of now, I am panic free and very open and honest with my doctor! I don't ever want to go through what I went through ever again! People who haven't had panic attacks really don't understand the physiological part of the panic attacks!
BOB MARTIN! You may be somewhat right about anxiety and panic disorders, however, I think just normal anxiety such as nervous about giving a speech is totally different than a full blown panic disorder! Everyone has some kind of anxiety, but unless one experiences a full blown panic attack, you will know the difference!
My previous psychiatrist, before I changed insurances said up to 4mg a day was ok,my current psychiatrist will not prescribe it
it depends on the doctor prescribing. usually they start out at 0.25mg 1 three to four times a day, then the next dose is 0.5mg 1 tablet taken 3 to 4 times a day, then the 1mg, is taken 3 to four times a day. they have a 2mg tablet it is white and I am not sure how it is prescribed. then I know they have an extended release in 2 mg. but it depends on what you take with the Xanax, they like to use the least effective dose in order to control symptoms. I had a cousin and a friend who really had a rough time because they took far more than prescribed. it's best to double check with the doctor,
Thanks caringsobj
Im on 1mg twice a day now,its not working great at the mo but thats due to pain im going through at the mo-maybe,im putting it down to that anyway.
Thanks for your reply, I understand the addiction side to xanax so thats why im weary. Thanks again i'm sticking to the doctors recommendation anyway, just was curious to know the "safe"daily intake
Most people I know take three or four 2 mg a day. I have an 80 year old friend they have him on 3 to 2 mg a day. Then I have another friend he takes for two milligrams a day. I myself have extreme anxiety and insomnia and I had to take three to milligrams a day. I had a bad child history I won't get into it but it's the worst kind you can think of and Xanax is the only thing that can help keep my mind off of it and help me to sleep and not have nightmares about it.
Hi Puckiemull! Well I had my surgery last week and I am recovering now. The reccomended daily dosing of Zanax is : 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg. Have you just started Zanax? My daughter takes it and says it is the only medication that helps her anxiety. It does, however, have some uncomfortable ,withdrawal symptoms. It is so important that you strickly follow your doctor's treatment on this medication. I hope you are doing well! Sweetie Pie
Hi sweetie pie
So glad to hear from you and that your surgery went well, thats great,im delighted,i know it'll take some while to recover but you're on the mend and thats something in itself.
I started on 0.25 last year then was upped to 0.5 then to 1mg twice daily.
My anxiety was so bad thats why it was upped. Its so so at the moment but with the endo its been tough last few weeks. The xanax dont seem to be working or else its taken a while for the prozac to kick in.I'm on it 4weeks now so maybe it needs more time. Thanks for reply anyway, great to hear from you again,Mind yourself and take it easy
I am ADD, Bipolar Depression and insomnia. I can take one 0.5 mg of Xanax twice a day. I try not to take it at all because my memory sucks as it is. I cant sleep. I have trazodone 100mg, Hydrocodone-Acetamin 10-325 4 times a day and a few other things I take. I CANT GET TO SLEEP. How much of the Xanax can I take at a time??? I just want to sleep!!
If you can't sleep use Ambien not Xanax.
Or Lunesta. Ambien makes me feel terrible the next day, Lunesta is much better for me anyway. It’s better at keeping you asleep the entire night and far less side effects. Good luck.
If you are taking Trazodone 100 mg at bedtime, this should literally knock you out. Make sure no caffeine after 5pm, and no food or drink 3 hours before bedtime. I did these things, and I sleep good now; especially with the Trazodone.
I too was on Xanax, but found it made me too nervous. I switched to Klonopin and I am very happy with it, and it lasts longer.
Hydrocodone kept me awake
