I have been taking Wellbutrin SR 150 mg twice a day for a few years now. I have been tolerating that dose fine. My doctor feels I need to increase to 3 x a day for a total of 400 mg a day now due to worsening depression and anxiety. I am scared of taking this dose! I have read all the hype about Wellbutrin and seizure risk at higher dose - I don't want that to happen, but my doctor said she had never seen anyone herself that has ever had a seizure due to Wellbutrin. Anyone out there have any advice? Thanks!

Hi! Just wanted to add, I, as well as many others I'm sure, have tried many different antidepressants and Wellbutrin is slightly different. I did ok & was feeling better the first 6-8 weeks and then suddenly, the anxiety started right back with full blown panic attacks. That's just me, if u feel like the med is helping, but u still experience symptoms, the easiest thing to do is increase dose of that med. the only way u will know if it will help you at a higher dose is if u try it! If it WAS helping u, but u feel like it's not helping at all, u may need a med switch. Everyone is different, but I'd try the increase for at least 2-3 days, if no improvement, talk to dr about the next step! It's tricky and can be a long process to get us on the right med at the exactly right dose! Don't stress about what u hear or read, just try it, ur body will tell you! Good luck!
What is maintenance range dosing?
And I was wrong - if it were three times a day at 150 mg it would equal 450 mg... I don't know what I was thinking. LOL.
I have been on 300 mg for like 2 years now.
Thanks for all your help. I am concerned, and I am trying to do some research on my own, it is just hard to know what is best. I am very sensitive to medicines, which also concerns me, but because of that I have trouble taking any meds - so Wellbutrin has been the best med for me... I have done the SSRIs in the past, and I could not tolerate them due to sleepiness, and I had a massive weight gain on them, and I am borderline diabetic from that weight gain, so added weight gain is not a good idea for me either. It is so frustrating!
*A maximum of 450 mg per day, given in divided doses of not more than 150 mg each, may be considered for patients who show no clinical improvement after several weeks of treatment at 300 mg per day. Administer the 100‑mg tablet 4 times daily to not exceed the limit of 150 mg in a single dose*
I'd follow the doctor's advice as 0.01% of patients taking higher doses experience seizures. You used the the word hype... The effects can happen but social media greatly exaggerates the risk.
Good luck and best wishes to you, Wildcat.
Bethann, you would still be in maintenance range dosing.
Wow, my Dr never mentioned splitting up the pills 3x a day. I was taking 450mg in the morning! Holy cow!
Have you tried any of the other time-released Wellbutrins; XL, or the simple just mg? I was on XL for years. My Dr. said they prefer SR. I'm now on 400mg SR. I take 200mg SR in the morning and the 2nd 200mgSR 4 to 6 hrs later, but no later than 2pm. I can tell it's actually working.
Hi Bethann-
You have a legitimate concern about the seizure risk. You may want to talk to your doctor about maybe adding an SSRI or an add on med that may boost the efficiency of the WB.
Hope it all works out the best for you :)
Thank you for responding. I was tolerating the 300 mg okay, but my depression and anxiety has worsened, and instead of changing my meds all together, she wanted to try increasing the Wellbutrin SR to 400 mg a day to see if that helps.
Hi, I would follow your own instincts. What I learned the very hard way is the Dr's tend to very much also brush off side effects. Just because she has never seen it doesn't make it true. I was told lamictal was fine until I developed a permanent blood disorder. This will follow me the rest of my life.
I only found out how serious it was by doing my own research because frankly I was brushed off.
Why did she want to increase the dosage if you say you are doing fine? That is the curious part.
I have been on 450 mg for a while after many years of steadily increasing the dosage. If I take too late in the day I won't sleep, so I take all three (150 mg each) at once. I have not had any problems that I know of related to this. However, last year I had an Abdominal Aortic Anuerism because my aortic valve was low on collagen and made the walls weak. This all might be related to taking real strong antibiotics for an extended.period due to.Lyme disease.
