I am a 48 female. I was taking spironolactone, metformin and falmina. I recently stopped the spiro and metformin but still take the falmina (pharmacy change from another). I had been on these for over 6 months. I was having side effects that went unaddressed. My previous dr didn't believe me, new year insurance change changes drs. Haven't seen new one yet (April 5).
My GP put me on Metformin and falmina. Some of what I was dealing with was gas, nausea and chin line hair growth (black and heavier white). My dermatologist put me on spiro to counteract the growth. How long until it balances out?
Can weight gain happen when stopping drugs?

I think your Dr was leaning towards your having polycystic ovarian syndrome which can cause abdominal discomforts and facial hair growth but is usually accompanied by menstrual irregularities. Metformin is often used as a treatment for PCOS because PCOS often comes with elevated blood sugar levels or insulin resistance.
Spirnolactone is used in PCOS as well for the abnormal hair growth.
There were 2 different dr's prescribing. Those were Not the diagnosis in my med chart.
Falmina can cause glucose intolerance and insulin resistance and is used mainly as birth control but can be used for other reasons and it can cause some weight gain. Metformin is a drug for diabetes or blood sugar reduction. Spironolactone is used sometimes to help reduce facial hair. Metformin often causes hunger therefore weight gain. Spironolactone works as a diuretic so if you stopped it, it can cause water retention again which could look like weight gain. Have you had irregular periods? You have a lot of symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome-google it! It might be helpful to know some background as far as what he was trying to treat and why you felt he wasnt believing you? It sounds like he could have been giving you meds to treat side effects from the Falmina.
Metformin was for prediabetes. and Spiro was for the hair growth, which was a side effect of the metformin. Vicious cycle, enough with the drugs. I've been trying weight loss; prediabetes be gone. It's just hard having residual drug effects.
IF PCOS... they haven't told me. Hopefully new dr can help.
You stopped the metformin and the spironolactone, right? The metformin was causing the gas, and the spironolactone is a water pill among other things, metformin is used for weight loss, so stopping them is probably responsible for weight gain. The hair growth can very well be totally different from the meds.
