This just happened to me. I have never took gabapentin in my life. I thought I was switched filed a complaint the reviewed all footage and retested it still failed. I lost 2 years of sobriety 2 weeks of take homes when I did nothing wrong. So please if anyone gets to the bottom of this let me know. I do take lots of supplements bit supposedly none interferre???
I’m prescribed gabapentin for my pain and seizures and in December it showed that I had toxic levels of it in my system but I only take 900mg a day 3X300. A week ago I came up negative. Now my doctor is taking me completely off of pain medication both the norco and the gabapentin so I went back to being bedridden. I wish I knew what it is.
I am very familiar with this issue as well as the horror that comes from being told that you took a drug that you had NEVER heard of much less taken. The issue is not that gabapentin rarely results in a false positive as I was told the same nonsense. The issue is the test performed, the instrumentality used and the laboratory that performed the drug test. What laboratory performed your test for gabapentin and if you know, what was the test code and procedure/instrumentality used?
Lyrica (pregabalin) can rarely cause a false positive drug test for gabapentin. It is not common, but it does happen.
I have been in pain management for 23 years. Today, my clinic told me that my urine screen contained high levels of gabapentin. I was prescribed Neurontin around 13 years ago before Lyrica was on the market, but I haven't taken any since. In fact, I didn't take anything other than what I am prescribed, including over-the-counter meds.
I am not sure if the Nurse Practitioner believed me, but I don't like having something in my records that I didn't do. Has anyone discovered a substance that gives you a false positive for Neurontin? If I lose my buprenorphine patch prescription over this, I will be so upset. I already take Lyrica, so I don't even see any purpose for taking gabapentin.
Neurontin, Lyrica, and gabapentin are all members of a drug class known as gabapentinoids.
I also have tested positive for gabapentin... I have never taken it in my life. I'm in recovery as well and I asked the doctor what could cause this... As many other people have said nobody will believe you at these facilities. If someone has an answer to this question please let me know!!
Request a test specifically for gabapentin. Chances are more than good that it will be negative. It's not a controlled substance and isn't usually tested for and shouldn't be a concern in your recovery.
This is happening to me right now as I type this. I was so confused when my doctor told me I had high levels of gabapentin in my u.a. And I had never took it in my life!! Someone else said that they took cbd, as I do as well. I'm so confused so if anyone has found the answer to this question please let us know why this is happening!!!
It amazes me the amount of people who don’t know that in some states including Kentucky, gabapentin(Neurontin) is a narcotic now.
“Gabapentin Becomes a Schedule 5 Controlled Substance in Kentucky Amendments to 902 KAR 55:035 were finalized and adopted on March 3, 2017. “
It’s because of the abuse of it with the heroin and opiate epidemic, using gabapentin with opiates causes a Euphoric feeling that many addicts just can’t get enough of. I am actually a recovering addict sober 7 years now and am now a Substance Abuse Recovery Coach and about to have my associates degree in substance abuse counseling and move onto getting my masters/bachelors in Addictions! I went to the methadone clinic where gabapentin became a very popular drug to get a hold of because it would make people feel a “high” mixed with the methadone.
(Note that methadone on its own does not give you any type of high, which a lot of people think does) They used to be able to abuse the drug Gabapentin and it not show up in drug tests until they of course cracked down and Kentucky made gabapentin a controlled substance. Now the clinic actually tests for gabapentin and I know many places who have their tests sent off to the labs, where labs actually test for it. Millennium, which is a huge drug testing lab that tests for methadone clinics across Northern Kentucky, have the tests that go pretty in depth and even show percentage of how much is in system. But to make a long story short, your state, most likely is one of the ones where gabapentin is NOW a controlled substance... ever since 2017-2018 somewhere around there.
Hope I helped if at all :)
Everyone have a great day and good luck.
I tested positive for gabapentin and I’ve never took them? What could of caused that
I know this is an older post but this just happened to me. I am also in recovery at a MAT center and have been since April 2018. I immediately quit any opiate I was doing when I started but did continue smoking weed until I realized I would never receive my take homes so I did quit that after the first few months. So today I went in to get my medication and take homes and she just happened to go back and look at my drug screens and said back on 9/23 I had a test positive for gabapentin which I've heard of but honestly don't know much about or have ever taken it in my life. I'm currently on no other medications and only take Tylenol or Tylenol migraine pills. I do not understand how this is possible and seeing that others have dealt with this too gives me some comfort that I'm not alone. And even though I've been clean the entire time (besides the weed the first few months) the nurse and staff don't believe me.
Which to a point I understand, I know they hear the "I swear I didn't take it" crap everyday but it's sad when you do everything your suppose to and still no one believes you. The nurse always tells me how I'm one of the best clients there and they wish more were like me but when it comes down to it I'm still just an addict in their eyes. She even told me to just tell her the truth and it wouldn't be a big deal but I refuse to admit to something I didn't take. The only research I found about false positives for gabapentin was people in renal failure can show up positive for it for 30 days so now I'm worried about that! Oh and of course because no one told me about the failed test until now she tells me it may be to late to have it retested! But thinking to back then I'm pretty sure I was taking the mouth swab test (couldn't pee in front of someone and they go months having someone watch you then stop for months, random). I was paying $20 to do the mouth swab instead and from everything I've read online gabapentin can't be tested for with the swab so I think something else is going on here like my test was mixed up with someone else's altogether. I cannot lose my take homes that took so long to get over something I've never taken! Ive been there a year and a half and still go 3 days a week and won't get my next one until May, unless this messes it up! I hope anyone even sees this since this thread is so old! Hope you all figured it out and I can get back to me with what ended up happening in your cases!
I just tested positive for gabapentin as well. After brief research, I found that this substance occurs naturally in the body. The test said I have high levels, but have not taken this drug in 12 years. I have been taking raw, green CBD oil, which seems to have a similar, but better effect. My hypothesis is that the CBD could possibly cause your natural levels to increase, as this is what it feels like. I have some background in biochemistry, & will research this further. Please comment if you, too are taking CBD & have tested positive for gabapentin, but have not taken Neurontin or gabapentin.
Gabapentin is a prescription medication that does not occur naturally in the body. What you are thinking of is gaba which is a neurotransmitter that is produced by our bodies naturally.
This also happend to me last week and i know that i never took that nor did i take anything form anyone for a headache or nothing and im so confused because nobody believed me and i know what i did and didnt do they also said it didn't show on the panel but when it went to the lab i had traces in my system any answers would be highly appreciated
Get re-tested. The testing is far from fool proof.
I also tested false positive for gabapentin which I had not taken. It's now a controlled substance and is tested for in drug screenings at my pain management facility. I am upset, however I do realize that testing for gabapentin is still fairly new and in my quest am finding nothing to date that is known to trigger a false positive response.
This is happening to me as well. I really don’t understand and I’m in recovery so it’s not like anyone believes me when I say I don’t take it. I’m so confused.
