What is Parsabiv used to treat?

Official Answer by Drugs.com 5 Jul 2017

Parsabiv (etelcalcetide) from Amgen is an intravenous calcimimetic agent used to treat adults with secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) who are on dialysis due chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Secondary HPT is a serious disease of the parathyroid glands, often due to kidney failure, which lowers calcium levels and raises parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels in the body.

Parsabiv works by mimicking the action of calcium and reducing PTH levels. Low calcium and high PTH levels can lead to weakened bones and an increased risk of fractures, as well as heart and circulation problems.
