I started ozempic in July 2021. I wanted to lose about 30 pounds. I started at 178 and I am currently at 142 (hit that weight in December, 2021). It is now January 2022 and I am just maintaining. In the six months of weight loss, I have lost probably 2/3 of my hair. It is shocking and sad. I take no other medications and have had no other changes in my life other than starting the ozempic. I am going to cut my does from 1.0 down to .25 for maintenance and hope that corrects the loss. It's awful. It most definitely is a side effect of this medication.
So I lost about 20 lbs and it was when I increased to 0.5 that the hair loss started .. huge clumps from the root. Very distressing. I asked my prescribing doctor who said he had not seen it on other patients but the. Again ozempic has barely been on the market for weight loss so the incidence of such side effects will take a while to see …. Having said that, from what I’ve read, rapid weight loss is meant to shock the body and hair loss is common but 20 lbs in 3 months doesn’t feel rapid at all. I have stopped taking ozempic. It also made me quite depressed - even as I was losing weight which was a positive thing.
I have been on this medication for a month and a half. I have experienced so much hair loss after increasing my intake to .5.
This makes me nervous, almost at week 1 at .5. When did your hair loss start. No loss so far for me thank-goodness. So far constipation is my major complaint.
I was on .25 for the first month. These past 2 weeks my doctor increased it to .5. My levels have changed for the better. My morning checks use to be before Ozempic between 190 to 260. Now my morning checks are 85 to 115. My hair these last two weeks has me extremely depressed because it's coming out and thinning really bad.
I have lost soooooo much hair. I’m almost bald. No diabetes. It’s from this medicine. It’s like did they Nair me. Then when I get into the bathtub bundles are laying or floating in water and when I comb my hair tons of hair fall out and not a lot of weight loss either. Ozempic is definitely making me loose most of my hair.
So sorry. Just upped to .5 and haven’t experienced this more than normal. Did it get worse when you went to the full dose?
So sorry. It’s horrible. I’m going through the same thing. First dermatologist said it was stress, 2nd accused me of pulling it out myself. Endo said it’s not the Ozempic. Its definitely the Ozempic. It’s been a full year. I don’t think my hair is going to come back. Going to a 3rd derm in July.

About a month after you starting ozembic.50mg, I started noticing hair loss, it has been close to one year of being on Ozembic and have lost 1/3 of my hair. I did lose 20 pounds but after six months of being on the medication, it no longer help me curve my appetite and I gained all the weight back. I finally realized that the medication is what caused my hair loss. I will no longer take
Ozembic. Because of my hair loss and re-gaining weight I feel depressed and look terrible. The company states that it does not cause hair loss but many people are reporting on the Internet, that they have lost hair from it. I’ve always had thick hair.If it’s causing hair loss who knows what else it’s doing to my body that the company didn’t report or find.
Ditto ditto ditto.
Five months after starting Ozempic for weight loss I had lost thirty five pounds and was feeling amazing! Then, it seemed that suddenly my beautiful, very thick, long, dark hair began coming out in handfuls. In the shower and everywhere. I immediately called my doctor and did a complete blood panel to find the culprit. I am 45 so it seemed likely to be hormonal changes but no. No smoking gun! Blood Work was normal. I had nowhere to look but the Ozempic and weight loss. It was shocking and embarrassing to be shedding hair like a dog everywhere I went. Washing my hair was like a scene from a horror movie. It wasn’t long until my scalp was visible and I had scraggly hair like an old man. I dialed back the Ozempic dose from .5 to .25 and now have regrowth. I have lost forty five lbs in all and do not plan to gain it back so I am staying on the lower dose since I am regrowing and not losing any more hair.
The lower dose is working for maintenance. I think I’m in a good place for now. Thank you all for sharing your experience and I hope my story helps you as well.
I have been on 0.5mg for 6 weeks so far and lost about 5lbs. My hair is coming off in clumps. When you went back to 0.25mg, were you able to lose any weight? I have 25lbs to go.
I had already lost 40-45 lbs by the time I scaled back and I don’t want to lose any more, just stay where I’m at. For me the .25 dose is maintaining. I haven’t gained or lost weight.
How is your hair now, is it coming back?
I have been losing hair like clumps since I have been on .5mg weekly dose. My scalp is clear for all to see. Will the hair comes back once we are off it?
My endocrine Dr who prescribed the Ozempic for weight loss has actually asked me at every check up if I’m having hair loss. So I’m not sure why they don’t list it as a side effect anywhere because doctors apparently know it is. I have been on Ozempic for just over 3 months now. I went up to .5 mg pen 2 months ago after 4 weeks at .25 mg. I’m responding no and asking why is hair loss a side effect? And she said yes and I was thankful I did not have any hair loss. Then starting 1 week ago that changed, and now every time I run my hands through my hair it comes out so I will be stopping Ozempic as my weight loss has been minimal in 3 months and it is just not worth it if I’m going to have this kind of hair loss!
My family doctor had me stop immediately, saying it’s 3% people have this side effect
I had actually lost about 12 lbs
I hate I’m not able to take it
Thanks to everyone who posted here so I don't think I'm crazy anyore.
I started ozempic Nov 2019 lost good amount of weight (50lbs) by June 2020 but my hairloss started in Spring 2020 with increased dose to 1.0mg and then I hit a plateau. I even asked if the ozempic could be causing the hairloss and got vitamin levels tested to ensure no nutrition density. Dr told me I was probably just getting old (I'm 48), or we thought maybe covid stress. I too had fairly thick hair but I have about 60% of the volume on top of my head now compared to before and still losing lots. Between that and the persistent nausea and weight plateau I no longer feel it's worth the cost and I'm definitely hesistant about any increased dose.
Yes, raising my hand in Ohio. I’m on my second week of Ozempic, and the hair loss has begun in earnest. From two hair-washing days, I scooped up enough hair from the shower, the floor and my comb that you might mistake the fluffy ball in my Zip-Loc bag for a small pet. Or a medium pet. Like a lop-eared bunny. Don’t know why I’m saving it—maybe to show my doctor. I think that sometimes docs don’t grasp just how much hair we’re talking about when we say we’re experiencing a lot of hair loss. I’m on a .25 dose right now. I’m afraid of what’s going to happen when I go up to .5. And I’m afraid to wash my hair! Isn’t there an FDA website where you can report drug side effects? I’m going to go hunting for it now…
I’m having the same problem and I’m freaking out. I don’t want to stop this medication because it’s all my insurance covers. I took victoza for years and never had a problem. But my hair is coming out constantly!! If you find anything out that can stop it or any info please post it. I’m freaking out.
Yes I have found since starting ozempic, I'm experiencing hair loss.
I do not see hair loss listed as a side effect of using ozempic however, I have noticed that since my dosage has increased to .5mg and then 1mg that I am loading a significant amount of hair. I have gone from having long, very thick hair to having loads of hair coming out in the shower and when combing. People have started pointing out that they can see my scalp now.
Anyone else having this problem?
I was wondering same thing. I started using ozempic April 2019 thru Nov 2019. took .5 to 1 most of that time period. Hair was coming out every time I combed my hair. and shampoo time was depressing. I lost at least a 3rd of my hair but thankfully I had a lot of thick hair to begin with. now that I'm ozempic free, hair shedding is minimal. I did lose 30lbs during that time. I heard massive quick weight loss also contributes to hair loss.
Since starting on Ozempic I too have experienced massive hair loss. No other meds have changed and no new hair products or lifestyle changes.
I'm having the same issue!
I have also lost hair on Ozempic. But very pleased that I can better contain my appetite!
