I started my period two days before getting my Mirena inserted. I have now been bleeding for almost 5 weeks. It will nearly stop or seem to stop then start again within a day. Small pieces of what appear to be tissue are in the blood, which is a lot brighter red than my normal period. Is this normal?
Is it normal to bleed for a long time after getting Mirena inserted?

Good to know this thread is still active. I just had my Mirena inserted during a D&C back on the 24th of March. My body hasn't really been handling it well. It's "accepted" it according to my OBGYN, but it's "sensitive" to it. The D&C was for severe thickening of the walls of my uterus from endometriosis. Funny enough, I'm going through all this junk right now just to go through the external part of the endometrial material removal (with the possibility of a hysterectomy) in a couple of weeks (-_-). Ever since I got mine inserted, I've been dealing with severe cramps (that can get to the point of debilitating at times), and heavy bleeding at first, which trickled down slowly and became spotting about a few days ago.
During the last two weeks my allergies (severe pine pollen allergy which runs on the spring and fall schedule here triggering my asthma) have kicked in full gear out of the blue, and my drainage is so bad that I'm coughing to the point of gagging and suddenly tonight I started bleeding heavily again. Not to mention the awful pinching sensations I've had in my uterus since Sunday when the coughing took a turn for the worst. I already tried reaching my OB once on Monday. I'm trying again tomorrow morning. I'm just miserable and wondering why I even let them do this to me. BTW my IUD is NOT for the purpose of preventing future pregnancies. Mine was put in for the hormonal value of using the progesterone to thin the lining of my uterus and keep it thin, while slowing or even temporarily stopping the growth of the endometriosis in general.
I replied to this a few months ago and here's my update! I pulled the mirena out at home in November and I AM SO HAPPY! I'd rather have a few days or horrible and awful cramps and bleeding then have to deal with wearing a tampon every day and messy/painful sex.
WARNING: On day 2 after I took mine out, I had massive heavy bleeding with blood clots the size of golf balls. I got out of bed and it was pouring down my leg, I couldn't leave our hotel room for 4 hours and thought I'd have to go to the hospital. It stopped and I saw that that's probably why I had to wear a tampon every day!! Nothing could have held all that back. Also, my periods were extra long and spread apart for the first three months after but now it seems to have leveled out! Good luck ladies! DO NOT plan to go to work if you take this thing out. You'll spend all day in the bathroom. I wish I'd have known this before I went out for my birthday!
That sounds horrific!! Glad to hear you're feeling good and happy about it though! I'm so torn. All of my coworkers are on the same schedule so I feel like I really have no chance of only getting my period quarterly! My doctor swore by it so I guess it'll keep being 2 on 2 off
Go to the doctor ASAP! You likely damaged your uterus and or cervix- they are not meant to be "pulled out" like a tampon! They are in a t-shape and require medical equipment to properly remove! You are lucky you didn't hemmorage to death, DO NOT RECOMMEND OTHERS DO THAT! that much blood is a major symptom of heavy internal damage!
I am going through the same issue, I had mine placed back on Jan 25 and no period for 2 weeks I thought I was going to be one of the lucky ones that have no period at all. I was wrong Feb 13, I started my period the flow was not that bad compared to what I used to get every month. The thing is that now I have to wear a damn pad everyday since I spot all the time especially when I go pee. What worries me is the color changes it goes through sometimes its dark brown and then an hour later bright red. I called my provider and scheduled an appt, considering that the only reason I got it placed was due to my heavy menstrual cycle and low blood count.
I'm going through the exact same thing. Had mine done on Jan 9 along with a d&c and polyp removal. Been bleeding/ spotting ever since. Had to have the depo shot to help the mirena along as I have a fibroid too. Today I have had cramping all day like when I first got the mirena but not as intense. Still enough to have to take mefenamic acid for the first time in 3 weeks. Thought I was over the worst. I've heard it can take up to 6 months for your body to adjust to the mirena.
Im so frustrated. ... I got the iud put in on August 1st ... I got it not for the birth control but to stop / slow my periods down (i have a like a 5% chance of getting pregnant again ) so its been almost 7 months and im still bleeding heavily like this month i started on the 5th (of February) and i am still currently bleeding an having to use super plus tampons and overnight pads at the same time ... Im so freaking tired of bleeding and then last week all of a sudden i stop bleeding for like almost 24 hours then i had sexual intercourse and i start bleeding heavily again and it was also painful during sex ... So today i scheduled for a consultation for march 1st to have it removed ... And im leaning towards going back on the depo even though i gained alot of weight last time i was on it , but it stopped my periods completely. ... Im hoping i wont have the same side effects as i did 10 + years ago while being pn the depo shot ... Please is anyone one else experiencing the same thing as im going through while on the iud ???
I've been on it since March 30, and my first period was April 4... its now almost May and I'm still bleeding. I'm bout to go crazy myself. I have my 6 week follow up May 9 I hope it ends before then
What ever happened?
I'm 47, got a copper IUD in January of 2016. Everything was fine last year, then I didn't have a period from Jan-April this year. Since I'm 47, I know I'm prime for menopause and was having hot flashes during the three months I didn't have a period. Then I noticed I wasn't having hot flashes and sometime in April, I had dark bleeding for a few days, then light colored blood, enough to require a tampon. That went on for a couple of weeks, then it stopped for a week, then it started AGAIN and has gone on for almost two weeks now. Effffff!! Is this IUD related, or menopause ?
I got my IUD inserted August 25 2016 and still currently have it in and I bled for the 12 weeks non stop. My doctor me that everyone's body is different and that it will do that but she stated that after about 6 month it should slow down and after year that the bleeding should well that was a bunch of crap because I'm coming up towards a year now and I'm still bleeding every month and slightly cramping so I'm thinking about getting removed. This IUD makes me have bladder spasms constantly and I just don't know what else to do. The only good thing about is the fact that I don't have to take a pill everyday.
I just got mine in, two weeks ago and having the same issue , plus some dizziness and on and off headaches . I knew I would have irregular bleeding but I did not understand that it would be none stop .
I see i'm two years late, but I'm hoping somebody will respond with an update of how they are doing! I got my IUD inserted on May 4/16. In a few weeks it'll be six months of having this and I have been spotting every day since it was inserted minus a four day break that randomly happened a few weeks ago. I am sick of wearing a tampon every day and I'm wondering if it is worth it. I wanted to give this at least six months as that was the timeframe I was given for a regular bleeding. Any thoughts?
I am exactly the same!!! Been searching the Internet for answers as I don't know what to do. I have almost constant pelvic pain now too, after undergoing surgery for Endo in May. The doc put me on progesterone tablets to kick start the Mirena but the bleeding never stopped. I went off them then my period stopped for 2 weeks and I was estatic!! I thought yay, no more period for 5 years!! Then soon enough pelvic pain & flow came back. It's so frustrating, I'm sick of the constant cramps and blood flow. I used o get bad pain but only for a bit every month, now it's everyday.. So over it!!! Maybe it's time we just got these stupid things removed!!
So that means I'll be spotting every now and then ?? I thought it cut me or something. I had sex and my partner did something that it hurt so I thought maybe it cut me . Can that be possible ??
Yes it's totally normal to have irregular spotting/bleeding for 3-6 months after insertion. If you are experiencing spots I would doubt it's from the string cutting you. If you can feel it you'll notice it's pretty rough, the texture of fishing wire and it can poke you or your partner and cause discomfort. That's probably what you're feeling. Just communicate about the discomfort and the string will probably shift around and become more comfortable after a while. Apparently it also gets softer after time but mine feels the same after 6 months. After daily tampon use I'm ready to hank this thing out!!

I have had my Mirena implant since April 2016 and I have had crazy periods ever since. I spot almost every time after sex, and my periods are at least 2 weeks long (and happen ever 2-3 weeks!) and they used to be only 3-5 days long. I have also experienced a ton of hormonal changes including constant UTIs after each period and sharp pains in my breasts while ovulating (and I have ever had that before).
I also have pelvic pains now. I saw that other people were saying they got that now too.
I haven't even had my Mirena for a full year yet and it has done me no good aside from keeping me from getting pregnant.
I got mine at the end of August and it is a completely different experience from the first one I had. I bled from day of insertion until a 2 weeks before the 3 month mark, then stopped for 2 weeks then bled for 2 weeks. I am currently not bleeding again. My cramps are still hell and it's frustrating that it's still happening. I was told if this doesn't work then I can either do ablation or surgery and remove the bits I don't need anymore since my tubes are tied. I just wanted to see where everyone else ends up at their 6 month mark. That would be February for me.
I got my Mirena inserted in April, 2016. I bled heavily every single day for 4 months, it stopped for two weeks, then bled every day for 2 more months. Then, by November, the bleeding started getting less frequent: more like spotting than constant bleeding. Now, in January, things have gotten much more normal. I just have an extra-long period (around 2 weeks). It's been frustrating, but I think I'm glad I didn't give up. That said, definitely consult your doctor. I saw my doctor frequently and had a couple of exams to make sure it was still working properly.
I'm going to call her, because this 2 weeks period then 2 weeks not is actually making this worse. I am ready to just be like cut it all out. If or when I start again if it lasts 2 weeks I am calling my Dr again.
I'm so frustrated. It's just about a year of having mirena (happy anniversary to me!) and I still have no pattern. I was really hoping to be one of those women who only gets her period 4 times a year but still nothing. At one point it was 44 days apart but this month it was 30 days and I've been bleeding for 2 weeks! And I'm cramping. The bleeding is light and cramps aren't terrible but I just want to be period free and vent!
All I hear from my doctor is "every body is different" and "give it time"
I had skyla inserted in January of 2016. A close friend of mine recommended it because it stopped her periods so why not try it. after the insertion (which was the worst pain I honestly have ever felt) I have a pretty high pain tolerance and seriously wish I wasn't awake during that. The next couple weeks I bled and cramped horribly and it started to mellow out from there for a couple months. All the sudden my periods came every 2 weeks and would last for 6 days with the most horrible cramps I have ever experienced!!! My breasts get sooo sore too and I have never experienced that breast issue on other birth Control pills I have tried! My cramps are to the point where I'm in full fetal position in pain and it's starting to effect my career. Oh and to add every time I have sex with my boyfriend it hurts so bad sometimes especially after I'm cramping up for hours after and most of the time spot after.
I'm so over this stupid thing I'm getting it removed soon especially after reading I'm not the only one who has experienced these horrific side effects!! Although I'm scared of getting it taken it out too ( the removal process) has anyone experienced removal issues or pain??
I had that in and it was terrible!! I was on it for a little over 6 months and bled, HEAVILY!!! Every day! I became severely anaemic and ended up having an iron transfusion because of it. So be careful! In my opinion, come off it.
Yes, some women can have prolonged bleeding after Mirena is inserted.
The manufacturer says that in the first 3 to 6 months your period may be irregular, or your period may be heavier at first and the number of bleeding days may increase, or you may have frequent spotting or light bleeding.
A few women may find that their periods are heavier than normal. Some women have heavy bleeding during this time.
You should call your health care provider if your period continues to be heavier than usual.

My Gyno told me that she has stopped reviewing people under the 3 month mark due to prolonged 'bleeding'...
Unless you are gushing blood, it is normal for you to spot every single day for about 2-3 months... It is annoying but normal... For me this is nothing new, having suffered with Period disorders most of my life, I am hoping the Mirena is the answer I have been looking for :-) I wouldn't worry too much :-)
I am three weeks in to having fitted , bleed every day so far , period was painful but bleeding still bad but not as bad as it has been , also period like pain all the the time . ???
I've had my mirena for 2yrs nw but when I first got on it I spotted for 2months then it stopped n a couple weeks ago I started having a lite period that lasted for about 5 days is this normal
I've had mine in since November of 2014 and I have been bleeding every two weeks since. Granted its a 'light' flow, but having to go through pads since it will drench a pantyliner and its too light for a light tampon is money consuming and just plain wasteful.
if this is related to the mirena i would love to know
I had my mirena in for about 1.5 years, I some periods but I had constant light to medium bleeding the entire time along with an odor. Once I had it removed the bleeding stopped shortly after and I had a couple short periods not really even regular but then I stopped having a period all together. I went to my obgyn and they tested my levels, I was told they were low and I only have a 5% to 10% chance of getting pregnant and that I will be taking hormone replacement for the next 20 years or so when my body should naturally go through menopause. :/ I was only 32 when I found all this out. I am greatfull I had my 2 babies and wasn't younger than I was but I was still considering having more children until that option was pretty much taken from me. It was my first time having birth control and it wasn't worth it to me.
I have had the IUD since March, everything was going well, little bleeding here and there. Though I have been bleeding for 4 weeks straight, some days are heavy some days are light. Plus I get cramps every other week. the Dr tells me this is normal. It is alot better then the super heavy flow I use to have. Though now 4 weeks bleeding, cramps, I'm just so uncomfortable. The worse is I never know if I'm just going to start to gush blood or not so im always wearing a bad & tampoon is I go out.
Hello Ladies -I am 51 years old and have had my Mirena IUD in for about three months now. Prior to the insertion, I suffered with very heavy periods for about three years to which I was taking a good iron supplement on and off (sometimes iron level would get too high) I had to triple my pad protection at night by putting thick layers of paper towels on top of the sanitary napkin layer. I put up with it and had hope that the heavy periods would dwindle. They didn't. I landed a new OB/GYN who gave me two options- ablation or Mirena. She highly recommended the Mirena and even has one herself (she is in her late fifties). All I can say at this point is that I am so glad I have the Mirena, as it has cut the bleeding down by half. My iron level is also normal as I take a daily iron pill. I have had low energy and discomfort throughout, but have learned to pamper myself and practice better eating habits and do some form of exercise every day. I am getting used to the new normal..
