I started my period two days before getting my Mirena inserted. I have now been bleeding for almost 5 weeks. It will nearly stop or seem to stop then start again within a day. Small pieces of what appear to be tissue are in the blood, which is a lot brighter red than my normal period. Is this normal?
Is it normal to bleed for a long time after getting Mirena inserted?

I basically bled the entire time I had the Mirena, and my doctor said it was normal for some people. I couldn’t deal w it and had it removed.
I got Mirena in December of 2018. It has been nearly 10 months of non-stop bleeding and heavy brown discharge. Once in awhile I get a 5 day break where I am not spotting but my vagina is so irritated from constantly bleeding that I almost feel more irritated than when I'm spotting or bleeding.
I am at the end of my Mirena experiment. I feel terrible all the time. I want it out.
Yes. Totally normal to bleed after insertion. Flow will vary individually, but more, less, heavier, lighter, clottier; all normal.
Also, to the member that said self-removal was dangerous due to the T-shape of the device -actually, your physician will remove it by simply pulling it out. The device self contracts during removal, so your comment was inaccurate.
Not sure if anyone is still reading on this thread but thought I’d chime in. I got my Mirena inserted about a year postpartum in August of 2018. I started bleeding right after for a couple of days and then stopped until it started again on 8/31/18. I bled every single day until 12/11/18 then had a week of no bleeding. And now it’s heavy spotting again. I’ve also gained 15 lbs. I’m almost ready to get it taken out, but I’m going to give it a year. We may be ready for another baby at the end of a year anyway
I got the mirena a month ago now because I had heavy bleeding. It slowed down just last week but then started up heavy again it's so frustrating to me I get so Moody. I was hoping it would stop all together.
I feel like taking it out but trying to hold on. So tired of wearing pads and tampons.
So glad I found this site. I'm 24 and had my Mirena inserted for 5 years. I had no periods and had little to no cramps. What i did gain in the last 2 years was hormonal acne and 50 pound weight gain.
I got my Mirena removed in August 2018 and had started my period a couple days later,it lasted for a week. I also lost 10 pounds and no longer looked bloated. September 2018 i had no period, but then October 20th 2018 I had my period and have been bleeding ever since. It's been 31 days of light/heavy bleeding and lining with not so bad cramps.
Is there no one here who actually STOPPED the bleeding after three months? I got my IUD placed a month ago and I'm over the bleeding. Ugh.
Got my mirena inserted 9/17 while on my period everything was fine until I got my period in October. it is November first and I still have my period. Not heavy not in my pee but whenever i wipe there it is. I hate this.
So glad this website is here. I had my second mirena placed in mid August and have bled ever since. I had my first mirena placed over 5 years ago and loved it.
This time not so much. The bleeding everyday is insane. I see lots of women reporting the same thing giant clots and varying colors of bleeding from Brown too bright red.
I am 48 & my tubes are tied since I was 27, after my 2nd child, so I got mirena because my periods were getting so bad that I had to stay home from work a few times because the bleeding was so bad.
But since having this second one the bleeding hasn't stopped and I can't determine if it will be a heavy day (pad and tampon) or a spotting day (panty liner). It's becoming frustrating but I an going to try and bear it because of my first successful mirena go round.
I got Mirena inserted 8/24/18, I am breastfeeding and haven’t had a period in 4 months until one week after getting it inserted. Since than I have had non stop bleeding/spotting, cramps, and headaches. I hate it! Is this normal?? I didn’t expect to be bleeding non stop for this long, and I am still breastfeeding
I had the mirena inserted on 4/2/2018 due to heavy bleeding and very bad cramps. First, let me just say it was the worst pain in my life, maybe because I am a 30 yr old virgin? Idk. The day I had it put in I spotted a tiny bit for an hour and that was it. That night however I cramped badly enough that I cried. The cramping lasted for about 10 days. I had my normal heavy 8-9 day period, no spotting or bleeding in between and my usual cramps every month thereafter, it seems like nothing has changed. The cramps aren't as severe though. I do experience very sore breasts. That's a new thing since the iud. After 5 months, I'm still hoping the bleeding will become less, the breast pains go away and my period becomes more manageable. I am going to stick with it because I am seeing progress. My cycle came every 20 days, now its every 25 days, and my cramps went from very painful to easy to manage with ibuprofen. I don't have any unusual bleeding either so yeah, I'll keep it in.
Hi All, ive had my mirena for a year and 2 months now, I got the mirena due to my endo, it has helped so much with the endo, I don't get the pain that I used to get, it used cripple me, almost pass out, have spewed a few times, anyways my periods used to be on time 4days every month, since the marina I swear I don't know what to do the doctor tells me to give it some time, I bleed so much like 3weeks of the month, its been like this since ive had it, it goes heavy then light, then heavy its insane its driving me bonkers. cant find much online about this either.
I got my Mirena inserted on May 11, 2018. It first started off as light spotting and then it seemed like it stopped for a day and then it restarted but this time it was heavier. And now it hasn’t stopped. It’s been 5 weeks and I’m really over wearing a pad everyday. But I’m giving it 6 months.
Hey guys!! I'm so glad I found this post! I am freaking out! I had the Mirena implanted on the First of May. WORST pain I've ever felt in my life! The bleeding was horrific the rest of the day, but then after that, nothing! I didn't bleed again until like the 8th right? When my period was supposed to come. It was as light as a feather! And lasted a day!! I couldn't believe it. I told my sister how amazing it was and she was amped up to get one as well. Well worth the pain I'd say. Then, on the 13th the bleeding started again. A lot. Ive been bleeding since! On day 10 and I don't know how much longer I can stand it. I've gone through multiple boxes of tampons, and I'm cramping now more than any period I've ever had in the past. Every time I have sex, I'm hoping there might not be as much, but every time it's an embarrassing murder scene. Ugh!
I got the IUD inserted on March 19 2018. The reason was because I had a heavy periods. I had spotting for one day and a week later I started to bleed. As of May 15 I am still bleeding but I am willing to wait it out for the 6 months. I am tired of the constant bleeding and many under wear have been ruin because some days it stops all of a sudden. Do you ladies think it is worth bleeding everyday to avoid heavy periods?
04/2018 had mirena inserted. Before iud i never had abnormal period, no significant cramping, had nexplanon for 3 years other than hormones out of wack still normal monthly cycles. After mirena things were ok after a week which was normal time for my period started beeding more painful cramps than usual and now 3 weeks later still bleeding light colored underwear ruined. Ive never had abnormal bleeding ever not sure of this will go away
