I started my period two days before getting my Mirena inserted. I have now been bleeding for almost 5 weeks. It will nearly stop or seem to stop then start again within a day. Small pieces of what appear to be tissue are in the blood, which is a lot brighter red than my normal period. Is this normal?
Is it normal to bleed for a long time after getting Mirena inserted?

i had a mirena done about 4 weeks ago and for last 9 days now i have been bleeding really bad and having heaps of pains in my stomach is this normal and how long until i should stop bleeding
I had the IUD inserted on November 30th/2017. It is now March 12/2018 and, aside from about a week relief back in January and a week in February, I have either been bleeding or having strange discharge. Sometimes the discharge is dark and sometimes it’s bright and tissue like. My periods are about 10 days long. It used to come every 21-28 days and lasted 3-4 days. It makes being intamite with my hubby more difficult and the spontinaity is non existent. I am tired of wearing a pad. It’s expensive to continuously purchase pads and tampons. The doctor told me it could take up to 6 months for my body to adjust. That’s a long time to bleed/ have discharge. I have also had a dull pain on my right side since the IUD was inserted. I had an ultrasound and the IUD is in the correct position. I don’t know whether to have it removed or wait out the six months. I am tired of what it’s doing to my body.
Im so glad to have found this site. Im at my wits end.
I had my Mirena IUD inserted on Sept 15 2017 for a D&C and fibroid removal which was causing hemorrhaging menstrual cycles and severe anemia.
Since that day I've had consistant bleeding, not always heavy, but always there. There are days where I only have a tinge of pink, but that is followed about 3 days later of golf ball blood clots and a huge amount of bleeding. Almost as if a dam broke.
Ive gone back to my doctor. He has told me that no woman in their right minds would ever put up with bleeding for this long. He also stated that my body is healed from my surgery so this isn't recovery, this is the IUD messing with my system. He suggest we remove it . I have taken a while to see how I feel about this, I didn't want to quit before the full 6 months. I was hoping it would get better, it hasn't. I think I might take him up on his offer.
Id rather have hemorrhaging menstrual cycles for 4 days, then this constant frustrating irritating bleeding every single day.
The only thing that can help me after this is menopause or a hysterectomy . :-( Yippee!
Thanks everyone for their feedback. Its comforting to know I am not alone.
I had Mirena inserted at the beginning of December. I have been bleeding straight (no breaks) for 2 straight months. It is lighter than my normal period but more than spotting.
I got on Mirena because I traditionally have longer periods (8 days) with one day of severe cramping. Since insertion I have had frequent cramping and have had several days I can't get out of bed. I did the math and all the days I have had cramping nearly equal 5 years worth of periods. So how is this helping? Unless my period completely stops at some point I will have bled more in my time on Mirena then without it. I would caution people to be prepared for several months of pain and suffering as opposed to "may have spotting or SOME irregular bleeding" which is how my OB/GYN put it.
I only bled a little bit for about 2 days after the insertion. Period came on Friday before last & ive now been blessing 9 days. A little annoyed but willing to try it at least the trial time of 6 months. Married with 2 and don’t want anymore. Thankfully my husband is patient
I had a not so pleasant experience over month ago with getting mine Inserted. I took a prescription pill 5 hours prior and ibuprofen 45 mins before as the doctor instructed. The insert of the iud was painful, I threw up at the doctors office and was laying on the couch for over a week with barely an appetite. I’ve been bleeding since with light cramps and lower back ache like I usually get with my periods. I’ve had this for over a month now, I think about 5 weeks. It sucks! And it is wasteful, I invested in a diva cup because of this.
Ok if any one can help this would be great . Had marina put in over a year ago . Didn't have many cramps but I did get regular periods as before , maybe not so heavy but they have always been there .. the last period was end of June 2017 and I had +_ 1 1/2 weeks break and since the break two weeks of constant spotting .. should I be worried ? I've never had periods for this long .
I had mine placed 2/14/17. I have not had any bleeding in 5 weeks. finally.
yes the blood was bright red after the first week.
hope you feel normal soon

I had the Mirena taken out yesterday. My OB/GYN kept telling me to keep it because the spotting and cramps last anywhere from 3-6 months. I am anaemic and don't think it's worth the pain. I had it inserted 3 weeks ago. First week was fine, and then I started bleeding (like a medium AF) since. I was very bloated and sometimes can't even sit/walk for longer than 15 mins due to the cramp. I am never very good with synthetic hormones. Apparently IUD is no exception.
Within an hour after taking it out, I immediately felt better. Bloating is subsiding and most importantly, my brain is clear again and can focus. I am still bleeding but I know it's going to take a while before I fully recover from it. Never again will I use IUD.
Update: Its been 3 months, and im STILL bleeding. I went about a week and a half w/ no blood, then after that, the faucet turned back on, and blood is just flowing. I ABSOLUTELY HATE MIRENA!
Long long have you had your Mirena for?
Its been about 9 months now. Still bleeding irregularly. My last period lasted 4 weeks. Im over it!!!
Hey...
So i had the jaydess fitted 4/6/17.. smaller version of the Mirena as i have a tilted cervix... purely had it fitted to help reduce blood flow and lengths of my period as i was on alot longer than most...
I started bleeding straight away... and havent stopped since... I get terrible cramps and sometimes light headed... its only been a month but i feel drained and dont know if this is normal?! it is literally like im having a 4 week never ending period... i prefer my longer than normal extra heavy periods to this...
im not sure how long im suppose to wait or leave it until it settles ?!
Any ideas ?!
27.. no children...
I had my first mirena placed in 2003 to control heavy periods, it was never for birth control. I've had my tubes tied. In 2011 I had #1 removed & #2 inserted in the same day. Which stayed with no problem until Oct 2016. At 50 yrs old my Dr wants to see where my cycle is at. It's now June 2017 and I've had #3 placed. I've never had any problems with bleeding ( I never had a period). With this last one I am experiencing some irregular bleeding, clotting ect but I go back to my Dr in 3 weeks for my check. After 2 successful experience and no period for 13 years or pms, cramps ect I'm positive this one will keep me until menopausal is past! Good luck ladies.
I had my Mirena put in April 21, 2017 during a d&e (miscarriage). As of today, May 30, 2017... im still spotting/ bleeding. I think i went 3 days without any sight of blood, had sex and the next day I started bleeding! Im giving this iud one more month, if i dont stop spotting/ bleeding by the end of June, im having it taken out. Im sick and tired of wearing pads/tampons every single day, i can't have sex, and the random gushes of blood are annoying!
I had the Mirena implanted on January 9th, 2017. My gyno says it can take up to 6 months or more to get the full benefits. I have been bleeding/spotting every day for nearly 5 months and yes I find it annoying too. I had to have the depo provera shot to give the Mirena time to work and my body to adjust. Last Thursday I had to have another shot as he wasn't happy about the continuous spotting/bleeding. After 3 months he will see if the mirena will take over otherwise it will be classed as a fail. We talked about the bleeding after sex and he said don't worry just do it anyway! I have a fibroid which has enlarged my uterus and is causing heavy bleeding. I hope things settle for you and sorry about your miscarriage.
Thank You! I have fibroids also. One is the size of a grapefruit. Maybe thats whats keeping the bleeding going? My dr too said its fine to have sex, but my hubby is not into that, so he's like, let's just wait until the bleeding stops completely... and i just dont see it happening. I know i have up to the 6 months, but i cant go through it that long...
Yes, fibroids increase the bleeding depending on the type that it is. Mine is that big too. The mirena may not be strong enough but stick with it. Fingers crossed for both of us!
Thank you! Best of luck to you as well!
I had my Mirena inserted about 3 weeks ago. I have been spotting since, and this week I have period like bleeding every other day. I have very bad cramps now, and I can't sit for an extended period of time. I wonder if I should switch to Skyla since have never had children and it's smaller and it releases smaller dose of hormones. Has anyone here taken out their Mirena because it's too difficult to deal with? I have a dr appt scheduled for next Monday. I might have it removed...
I had very bad cramping for the first few months. So bad I had to stop and take a few deep breaths until they pass. Also needed medication to help take the edge off. Now I'm 6 months into having my first mirena. Cramps have lessened heaps but I do get twinges every now and again. Spotting and light bleeding on most days still. Some have taken up to a year to adjust to mirena.
I had mine inserted on 4-17-17 and I quit bleeding yesterday. I had a baby on 3-15-17 and I quit bleeding just 3 weeks after I had him. Before I went to the doctor I started bleeding one day before I went and I have been bleeding ever since. It has been heavy. I never had heavy periods, mine were always light. I'm not gonna give my hopes up and say that my period stopped. I would use the pill but I am a first time mother and I work and I go to college. I just dont have time for that anymore.
Well, I've got mines 03- 29- 17. The first two days i bleed. Then for like a week it i didn't have a period, so yeah okay I was excited. But soon after i being to bleed but not as heavy as i were before i got it. No cramps for the first couple of days then just mild light cramps ever so often. Im starting to regret getting it because since i started back bleeding it hasn't stop. No spotting, its a period flow but light. I got it due to the fact i cramp bad and bleed heavy. Pluse no more kids. Lol. But so many people saying give it a chance and that soon it all stops. But im getting piss. I freaking hate periods and now im bleeding everyday. Its tiring. I wish it stop only giving it to next month of not its coming out. And I'll just get the shot.
I got mine put in the end of March bled just one day... then started my period on april 20th im still bleeding to this day... i called the place i got it put in and they said its normal unless its heavy bleeding... they swore itd make my periods almost disappear... b.s.
I had my mirena placed 2-14-17. I cramped and bled. Since then, I have had maybe 3 days of no bleeding. Ours making me crazy. I'm thinking I'd rather have the 4-5 days of heavy bleeding than this.
I totally feel u ladies, I got mine March 13, and it didn't much was fine the day. But never stopped spotting/bleeding. Just when I think its about to be done it starts all over again. My doc even gave my BC pills to stop the bleeding and that didn't work. I'm so irritated right now my husband is ready to pop. Becuz being a women u don't want to when your special place not right. So the 27th will be 2 full months of this BS and really considering having it removed. This can't possibly last for 6 months I'll die. Patiently waiting for it to go away FOREVER.
