Is it normal to take 3,000mg of gabapentin? I take 1,000mg 3 times a day for occipital neuralgia, migraines, and cervical dystonia; as prescribed by my Neurologist.
It helps to a degree but it's not miraculous at alleviating the pain. I also take a cocktail of other medications for other health issues.
I'm wondering if something other than gabapentin would be help relieve the pain more effectively to my advantage.
Is it normal to take 3,000mg of gabapentin? Or would another be better?

3,000mg of Gabapentin per day is too much for most people. Gabapentin is used mainly to treat nerve pain caused by diabetes and many other usages as stated by your doctor. However, Gabapentin is not used to treat Cervical Dystonia at all as far as my experience is concerned. The less invasive method is doing physical therapy. If that fails, meloxicam 15mg might come into play. I do not know your cervical dystonia is in what section of the cervical spine (C1 to C7). Gabapentin doesn't help migraines neither in my one cent of opinion.
Hi Luna moth. My 50 yr old son has been on 3600mg since 2002 for full body CIPN (chemo induced). It really helped for a few yrs. Then he had upper/lower spinal nerve implant. When charged, he said it reduced pain about 40%.
He has used methadone-severe itchy rashes, morphine-unrelenting nausea and foggy brain, Cymbalta-all the above, Lyrica-ditto
He is now following a homeopathic course and exercise which he never thought he could do.
I have SFPN and use 600mg gabapentin and 30 mg Cymbalta which I'm tapering off of. Went up on Gambalta awhile ago to see if it made a difference , but that fogged my brain too much.
There is a more powerful spine stimulator now which sends a soundless wave constantly through th nerves to reduce brain's message of pain. I am going to research it. Ask your PM Dr about it.
If your PN pay n is severe, 3000mg or whatever you can tolerate is normal.
Best of luck. Trish
That's a pretty high dose to not be very effective for you --- Lyrica is the newer alternative to Gabapentin but it has been found less effective and to have greater risk of side effects. I use physical therapy, water therapy, anti-inflammatory diet and exercise (like stretching, walking, yoga, etc) and have found it the best alternative for me. I hated to be on so many medications and though it wasn't an easy process to get off the Gabapentin I'm very glad I did.
Hi Luna,
The max dose is 3600 mg per day.
I didn't get satisfactory relief so I got off of it because it was affecting me mentally.
A nurse mentioned Imitrex. Have you tried it?
It was my miracle drug!
I had a constant headache from morning to night x 15 years.
Within 20 min the headache I was gone!
No more grimacing by trying to exist with constant head and eye pain!
I only have to take it about once a week now.
Best wishes,
:-)
I take 600mg 6 times a day for neuropathy in both my legs.
