How long will I be going through Cymbalta withdrawals?

I've been taking Cymbalta for 8 years for depression and chronic pain. I started having terrible sweating, short term memory loss, severe depression, worsening pain, and many other side effects.
My Dr started slowly trying to get my dosage down from 90mgs, & after getting down from 60mgs to 30mgs, my side effects became unbearable. I forged on and now I'm on my 2nd day of taking just 5mgs of Lexapro, after going 3 days w/out taking Cymbalta.
I'm curious if anyone has successfully conquered this transition, and how long it took to feel somewhat normal? I'm aware it doesn't happen overnight, and I'm not asking for rainbows & butterflies-but the way I feel now is NOT good!! Along with the other stated side effects, I'm so lethargic and my brain is acting as if I turned the switch to off.

It varies from person to person I beginning to see. I am trying to get in touch with the FDA to either ban this drug or give serious information on it before prescribing. I just went off it myself. It is horrifying! I was prescribed this after chemo caused neuropathy in my legs and feet. I have fibromyalgia also. This drug is prescribed for many reasons. Anxiety, depression, nerve pain and maybe more. It works at first from all I read. But in a short amount of time for me it stopped. The side effects on it weren’t good. But after reading up on what to do I called everywhere. Hospitals , doctors, rehabs. There’s no help unless you have money. Or a great doctor. I told my doctor what I read would help. I’m on Prozac for a short time only. I take clonazepam 1mg /3 a day. I am also taking a very small dose of Ativan. I still am having anxiety. Seriously scary anxiety. Nausea. Difficult to eat or drink.
Losing weight I just put back on from cancer. I am angry. After all these years and a lawsuit can they keep prescribing this? And we aren’t told anything. Everyone should be complaining. To the FDA. Online anywhere. Social media. Seriously. I would have wanted to know this. This forum goes back at least 6 years! That’s insane. And on top of that some people were on a very large dose. I have withdrawn off narcotics easier than this. That was for cancer and osteomyelitis in my jaw. Very rare. This is worse than all that. Not exaggerating. But I pray. I meditate. I know it’s helping. Believe it. It is still very tough. It’s been about 2 weeks for me. The last two days were somewhat better. But now I’m getting the neck pain and headaches. I believe it affects people very differently because of dose and how long you were on it. We deserve something for this. Other people got money. But they stilll aren’t really reporting how horrible this is. And even docs don’t know. Tell everyone you can. I am. Good luck. If you have strong will and a good faith in God he will help. Blessings. Just know it will end. I wrote to the drug company and talked with them. I gave them the advice of making 15 mg , 10 mg, and 5 mg pills to help. I went off too fast. But I did taper. If I knew this I would have tapered much slower than I did. I’m freaking out! It’s very scary. They should have to pay us. God bless. Hope most of us can do this at least. I read many couldn’t. Boy that ruins your life. They weren’t feeling good on it and can’t get off it. That’s just so wrong.

Hi everyone. I’ve been taking 60 mg of Cymbalta for 10 years and I’ve been tapering off since June of last year (2017). I’ve been tapering by 10% of my last dosage taken every 2 weeks. How I started was to get an estimate by counting the beads in 3 capsules and use that number to start my taper. It’s a good idea to start a journal so that you can keep track of the numbers and also so you can see your progress. The capsules are a bit tricky to get open at first but it becomes quite easy. Counting the small beads seem hard at first too but it doesn’t take long for it to get easier. I use a black cloth to empty the beads on and count them out in tens with a fingernail file. You can use anything you want if it makes it easier for you. Some people have found this too hard so if you do there’s a few other ways to do the taper. Some have done the water titration by mixing 1-1 ratio of beads and water.
There are videos on YouTube that you can watch to show you how it’s done. Others have done the weighing taper which can also be seen on YouTube. Some people have done their taper by getting it done at a compounding pharmacy. Doing your taper any of these ways your ‘withdrawals’ will be minimal. They now call the tapering process ‘The Discontinuation Syndrome’ so it has finally been recognized. Some people have been able to go a bit faster and some have had to go slower. You have to listen to what your body is telling you. It will let you know if you’re going too fast. I know that this takes longer than what your doctor will probably tell you and what you have heard but it will be worth it to go slower. These types of medications are powerful. That’s why there are groups with thousands of people trying to get off them. I am down to 10 mg now and almost every side effect is gone. I am still tired most of the time and I get anxiety a bit. It’s crazy that I was prescribed Cymbalta for chronic nerve pain but it caused me to have anxiety and depression. And it didn’t even help with the nerve pain. Sometimes I have taken a break from my tapering; like around Thanksgiving, Christmas or if I know that I have to go out. I’m hoping to be completely off Cymbalta by early next year (2019). I hope this helps someone to get Cymbalta free without having to go through the nightmare that some have had to go through. Take care and I wish you all the best. Cindy

Correction! I have read lately that it’s not a good idea to do the water titration with Cymbalta. It can be used for Lyrica/Pregabalin and Neurontin/Gabapentin. So sorry! Cindy

Been on it for around six weeks for Neutopathic pain as Endep was making me fatter and the nerve pain has been horrendous since and now I have to withdraw from Cymbalta and back on Endep *sigh*. Having to go through many withdrawals in the past (worst was Pristiq) and after reading your comments I’m not looking forward to the next few days

I’ve been taken Cymbalta for a year now to deal with neuropathic pain. The dose was increased to 120 mg a few weeks after starting the medication.
After a successful surgery in May, I started to taper down by going from 120 to 90, then to 60 and further down to 30 mg. Every time the dose was reduced, I spend 4-5 days in bed completely unable to do anything. Headache, dizziness, nausea, insomnia, brain zaps and being extremely fatigue along with a pounding and racing heart beat then slowly became better after 2 weeks. As I lowered the dose, the more intense the withdrawal symptoms were.
In Europe Cymbalta is only available in 30 mg and 60 mg capsules. Realizing the nightmare I was about to face going from 30 to 0 mg, I decided to open the capsules and reduce the amount of pellets gradually.
I bought a mini scale capable of measuring as little as 1 mg. Each capsule can be opened carefully by sliding a small, non-sharp object from the white side under the blue side and when use your fingers to twist it apart in two half capsules. You empty the pellets slowly on the scale until you reach the desired number of milligrams and then pour the pellets back into the white capsule and close it again with the other half. Please notice that number of mg pellets is not equal to mg Cymbalta.
I went down 1 mg per day, which I realized was too fast. After reaching 15 mg, the above symptoms started to surface again and I spent all of yesterday in bed. Now I will take at least a week on 15 mg to become stabilized again and reduce the symptoms. Afterwards I’ll try to go from 15 to 10 mg over 10 days, 10 to 5 mg over 15 day and finally from 5 to 0 mg over 20 days.
Hopefully this will do the trick.

Finally, I’m off Cymbalta after 5 months of slowly reducing the dose!
Worst nightmare ever - I’ve withdrawn from OxyContin twice, but Cymbalta withdrawal beats it by far.
It’s been 18 days since the last capsule with as little as 0.250 mg active component inside. The withdrawal symptoms have been severe with nausea, headache, stomach problems, dizziness, insomnia, brain zap, overeaten, visual disturbance - almost like watching the world in a slow frame rate, pounding heart beats and being extreme fatigue. Slowly the symptoms have started to subside, but they are not gone yet.
To all of you out there, hang in it will be better.

This is the worst drug -I have ever taken in my life I have had all of the below and above going from 60 to 30 this week. I started it a couple months ago. My doctor gave it to me for Depression and Pain.' So I was excited since my Prozac was not keeping all the depression away due to my pain,
I went from: On the go to Never leaving the house Literally last week my best friend, screamed on the phone" I had to see a doctor or go to the hospital." I did not want to leave my home I started with panic attacks and displaced anger. I was having blurred vision and fainting spells that day. The months before -sweats-sleep-sleep-rest- No energy at all. I have been itching so bad for the past month that I have tried everything for it to stop. I thought it was fleas from the kittens. I am going back on Prozac. I am not sure what I will do for the pain. My celebrex was raised to 200mgs a day. I hope adding Tylenol will be ok for pain. Never again.

I've been on Cymbalta for about 14 years. Almost from the day it was released. I never experienced any side effects and it was all good. I then thought that, after 14 years, things might have changed and I can stop. Which I did. Dizziness, brain zaps (like a hissing sound in my head), muscle aches, palpitations, no sleep, not enough sleep, shaking, sweating and a few others started happening. It is still going after 3 weeks but turns out I am emotionally as good with it as without it. The way it is going I would guess another 2 to 3 weeks before all will be normal again.

Hi! Hang in there!! You can do this! It took me 3 months to come down and then another 4 weeks of no Cymbalta. That’s when it got ugly. My advice is lots of water, sleep when you can, exercise, no alcohol and you’ll get there. I was on Cymbalta for chronic pain and I did notice that my back pain got worse once I was done, but it’s not worth taking that awful drug!! Hang tough and know you can do it!

I have JUST finished withdrawing. I was originally on 60mg for years for chronic pain. If I didn’t take it, the buzzing and dizziness and all of it would start. It was awful! Once I decided to talk to my neurologist about coming down, her advice was to “tell everyone you know that you are withdrawing and to hunker down for 2 months”. Well, I have a full time job and kids so that isn’t realistic or helpful. Over a 2 month period, I got down to 30 mg every 2 days and then stopped when I ran out of pills. The withdrawal hit hard with brain buzz, extreme anger, irritability, dizziness, insomnia, abdominal pain, crying bouts and everything else. By day 14 of no Cymbalta, I was buzzing less and starting to feel better. Now I am almost buzz free after about 30 days. I didn’t do anything but exercise a lot, eliminate any alcohol and cut my caffeine to 1 cup of coffee a day.
Unfortunately, there is nothing magical that makes it better other than talking about it with people who understand and giving yourself time. I would write my symptoms down every day with a 1-10 rating and as the days went by, seeing progress gave me hope. I also increased my talk therapy to twice a week. This is so hard and you are so brave!! It’ll get better even when you don’t think it will.

Your post and the other posts are so incredibly helpful. I'm only on day 2 of weaning off of Cymbalta completely and going on to Trintelliix. I went from 120 mg to 60 per my doctor's instructions and I see now that is a pretty big drop. I definitely have the dizziness and the headache, but I'd say my worse symptom is the EXTREME bouts of anxiety. God, they are so rough! My former psychiatrist weaned me off of Effexor (also quite rough) and put me on Cymbalta? Man, I wish I'd done my research! I'm stopping Cymbalta because it my depression has actually worsened... did others have that experience too? I'm going to hunker down (like you said) until I get through this. I'm going to hold on during these awful bouts of anxiety and tell myself that it is the withdrawal talking and is NOT true reality of how my brain operates. We have to all stick together!

I totally feel for you!! I also came off Effexor years ago when I was pregnant and had brain buzz for a year after stopping. I’m totally off Cymbalta now with no buzzing and I totally understand the anxiety bouts. I would definitely say try to stay away from alcohol! I drank one night during my Cymbalta withdrawal (maybe 2 weeks after stopping completely) and I was a rage machine!! I didn’t recognize myself, I was blind angry. Not a good decision. I have read others mention exercise and that helped me a lot. Daily workouts and yoga to quiet my head. We’re with you and I promise it’ll get better!!! You’re very brave and strong and you will do this!!! We’re all behind you!!

Two months?! Well, crap. It took my doctor nearly a year to convince me to try Cymbalta for chronic nerve pain. Besides not wanting any additional meds, I didnt like his attitude of "yeah, so, you've been on the wrong kind of medicine, so here, try this" as he attempted to hand me a script and walk out the door. After months of my own research, I decided to see if it could positively impact quality of life. It helped with the nerve pain, but the 15+ pounds on a 110 frame were unwelcome. October first I weaned myself off in a week and quit. Thought any side effects might linger past that, but two months??? I was alert for any mood changes, but did not research or anticipate any other effects. Until the nightmares, vertigo, and carsickness became so severe it didn't occur to me that these might be from withdrawal. Guess I'll hunker down through November and hope Christmas brings better days. Thanks for the info.

Third time trying to get off. On for 9 yrs at 60mg for neuropathy in my legs and feet. Found out not neuropathy but that I had leaking valves in my veins. Had vnus surgery on both legs and it cured the problem. Now trying to get off the duloxetine. Wicked brain zaps , like an electric current in my head. anger and crying for no reason. Glad to know that eventually it will get better. Down to 60mg every 4th day. I agree lots of exercise and hydration help. Hoping one month is a good result. Thanks for the encouragement
Hi I also am trying to come of doloxetine. I tried every second day . I found when I missed a day that was ok but then the day I was on was terrible. So I decided going one step at a time am trying not to take it . I’m up to 7 days not taking it . I have been very emotional

I am experiencing a similar problem. I started Cymbalta years ago by my neurologist to help with paresthesia, I decided I needed to get off because I decided it did not help, I was just being a compliant patient. I was at 60 mg, dropped to 50 mg for a month, 40 mg for a month, 30 mg for a month then 20 mg. Now I am at 20 mg every other day. The day I take 20 mg I'm worse! The paresthesia is horrible. This has got to get better.

I’m in a similar situation currently. My psychiatrist started with me reducing my Cymbalta dose by 30 mg a week; I had been maintained on 120 mg Cymbalta for 5 years, 90 mg for 5 yrs before that. I’m 5 days with zero Cymbalta in my system. These 5 days have been much harder than any of the weekly dose reductions. My husband’s a physician and says I could have to endure another week to 10 days of this. Once my Cymbalta dose was down to 60 mg my psychiatrist started my new antidepressant, this time it will be Viibryd. I’m on 20 mg Viibryd and I believe my periods of depression during cessation were eased by this.
Your doctor has you on 5 mg Lexapro. You’ll likely require 10 or 20 mg Lexapro to get relief. My daughter is a psychiatrist (although not mine) and tells me many doctors fear giving patients too much seratonin blockers at the same time, causing something rare called seratonin overload. I believe that you are on no Cymbalta and only 5 mg Lexapro so should consider calling your doctor, report how you feel, and ask if he can increase your Lexapro dose. Right now your brain chemistry needs more Lexapro, and you can safely move to 20 mg a day, 10 if your doc is overly cautious. I stopped asking my primary for help and went to a psychiatrist, the teaching schools accept Medicare and insurance and have good psychiatrists. Best of luck to you. Cymbalta was great but NOT worth these cessation symptoms. I hope the Lexapro works for you. It helped me for 10 years, and my daughter (yup, the psychiatrist) has been on Lexapro 15 yrs.

Doesn't anyone find that Cymbalta has major problems when doctors think that they have to prescribe other medications to help wean off of this medication? Something is wrong with this picture. Nothing should be that hard to stop.

I have taken cymbalta 60 mgs for 6 years and stopped taking it 1 week ago so far the only side effects have been insomnia and eating like a horse. To those that think klonopin/clonazepam is great for anxiety are sadly mistaken. I had a much harder time detoxing from that. Try ativan it's easier to come off of when you are ready. Plus half life is shorter.

This is my first week off is Cymbalta of 40 grams. I took 3 weeks tapering down thinking that would be good enough once I was fully off I was in misery. I would actually compare it to a heroin withdrawal not that I've ever been on it but this was miserable. The crying spells the first 3 days the anger and being mean to everybody now I just have brain zaps which is very annoying makes me dizzy. I changed my diet and took supplements to help still waiting for it to go away. But I don't want to go back I won't let this drug control me.

I agree this is the worst withdrawal from a medication I’ve been through. 5 days off and I’m crying nonstop, severe anxiety and weird feelings of losing control. The Ativan is starting not to help too much anymore. I hope this ends soon.

I was on it for like 2 years. I’d skip a lot too. But at the end of my time using it , I’d get headaches and depressed but i took Tylenol or any OTC for my headaches and just focused on staying calm. Making sure the things I was actually depressed about were things that happen to many on a daily basis and it’s just part of living But then again , I wasn’t on the highest dosage. I drive 18 wheelers for a living and I am always determined to not let life beat me. And it’s all mental. Nothing physical. just try to put things into perspective if those things we have in our heads is really worth the pain ? Hell no it’s not. It’s life. We got to pull through each day. Last year I got on Prozac. it seems to actually be better for my depression. That’s how it went for me though. It might effect others different. Hope you can work through it.

I'm currently going through cymbalta withdraws. I was wondering if anyone else has ever had the symptom of their left arm feeling tight. I'm almost 3 weeks in. I've went to the ER because I was concerned and they pretty much said they wasn't sure what to do or tell me. I ended up with serotonin syndrome not exactly sure how or why. I also have a prolapsed bladder. I'm still really shaky very cold at times but the most uncomfortable feeling is my left bisept feeling extremely tight and uncomfortable. I have been on cymbalta over 10 yrs now. Please any info will be appreciated. Kynyada37
