Does Latuda cause weight gain? I hope its extremely rare to gain weight while taking this medicine. I hope the odds are in my favor to not gain any weight or have any side effects at all that would be awesome!!Just started taking Latuda after stopping Abilify because of weight gain hope I made a good choice in doing so. I thought it about time to change meds I been on Abilify for 11 years but started recently to have issues with depression and my mood. So My Psychiatrist put me on Latuda40mg so far I haven't noticed any side effects but its still too early to tell its only been three days since being on this new med. I take Latuda in the evening with a meal for Schizophrenia and Bipolar as well as for depression and to stabilize my mood also I take Lexapro at bedtime.
Does Latuda cause weight gain in a lot of people or is it extremely rare to gain weight?

I gained a lot of weight when I was on seroquel and Abilify. I have lost a lot of weight since being on latuda, not where I am under weight but where I am struggling to eat and never have an appetite. I like that its easy to keep weight off but hard to maintain my weight and eat healthy.
I use to be on Seroquel which caused weight gain, however, Latuda is more weight neutral. It only caused a 10-pound weight gain in me, and I'm managing to lose weight. Other than that it causes minimal weight gain and is more weight neutral than the other antipsychotics. I love Latuda and take 60 mg. which is still a low dose. It's a comfortable medication without the excessive side effects, weight gain, and onwards, often seen in other antipsychotics.

I started 3 days ago I just don't want to gain weight so far so good but the side effects is my head and feeling really nauseated as time goes on hopefully they go away .
I'll get back in 2 weeks good luck God bless .
Was on Latuda 20 mg for a year or so. Was able to lose 65 pounds. However, three days ago Dr. increased to 40 mg. I have already gained 1 pound. In three days. I track my daily calories and my average for these three days was 1,250 per day. This is definitely a weight gain medication. Have already called the doctor to give me a new prescription for 20 mg. No way I am going to be "fat and happy."
From my experiences I am taking latuda 120 mg at night. I have noticed I'm not gaining weight but putting on body fat quickly. Its making me feel down I even go to the gym and eat healthly. I got to be honest with myself iv been having sugar and carbohydrate cravings a lot and I think that's putting body fat on me but not quiet sure.
I was on Abilify and could not lose weight on it. I've been on Latuda since June/July this year and have lost a bit of weight not changing anything. However recently I broke up with my boyfriend, haven't been eating for the past 4 days and I've lost 4kg. I don't believe I could've done that on Abilify, I believe I couldn't have stopped eating on it and even if I did stop eating, I think I still would've kept the weight on as it was so hard to drop on that drug! So for me, I think Abilify is weight neutral as I have read in my research that it is for a lot of users.
Do you mean you think abilify is weight neutral or the Latuda??? My doctor told me Latuda was weight neutral. I heard of lots people gaining on abilify. These drugs
Sorry, yes - Latuda is weight neutral. I’ve lost 19kg on it.
I always like to chime in on these boards with the message of always taking what we read here with a grain of salt. I do this because of the impact these kind of boards can have on people's psyche; it had one on me.
I struggled with chronic back pain and disc disease for years (now in remission). I would often go to message boards for help, only to be inundated with the bleak and miserable histories that so often fill up these kind of sites.
If I had believed 50% of what I read on the there, I never would have believed recovery was possible.
That was when I remembered that typically people who receive treatment and recover just move on with their lives rather than revisit old message boards to let people know that help is possible. Some do, and god bless them.
My guess would be that something similar is going on here. If Latuda worked for you and you didn't gain weight, I doubt you would come back and alert us to the news, so we inevitably get the false impression that most people gained weight on this drug, but it's simply not the case.
Double-blind studies showed that around 8% of patients experienced weight gain at roughly an average of 7% of their body weight. More importantly, 6% of the placebo group gained the same amount of weight. This means that the most we can say with any amount of certainty is that there was a 2% difference, or that there is some correlation between weight gain and latuda in about 2% of the total experiment population. 2%. These numbers also do not reflect the number of people that lost weight, however few that may have been.
Older generations of anti-psychotics affect certain histamine pathways that can potentially affect hormone levels and subsequently your metabolism, in addition to other factors, hence weight gain.
Latuda doesn’t influence the H1 histamine receptor nor the M1 muscarinic receptor. Possible explanations for weight gain then usually rest on unknown metabolic affects still being studied, but more often on lifestyle changes caused by the drug and decreased depression such as increased hunger, more energy to eat and enjoy food, the potential lethargy that limits exercise, and so on.
This last point is really important to remember because the contributing factors for the weight gain specific to Latuda (and other bipolar drugs) are BEHAVIORAL, and NOT a genetic predisposition (at least not one that wouldn't be affected by dispositions you have anyway not related to depression (lots of mentally sound people struggle with weight gain).
This means that we have some agency here - we can change and modify our behaviors to mitigate, if not entirely reverse, weight gain on this drug.
To really get a better picture of how Latuda affects weight gain in some people, we would really need to know what exactly are their levels of fitness, the quality and quantity of their diet, and body composition; factors that influence metabolic stasis the most. Most people struggle to be honest here and are so even in rigorous research studies; it's not easy to admit to anyone, including ourselves when we're alone in a room filling out research questionnaires, that perhaps our behaviors are contributing more to our weight gain than we thought.
For some perspective, significant portions of people who begin exercise regimens gain weight, and not just a little. This is because exercise affects your BEHAVIOR, namely in how you eat. Exercise releases ghrelin, a chemical which encourages appetite. It also can contribute to the faulty logic that because your exercising more you can simply eat more. Both of these are behavioral issues are brought on BECAUSE of the treatment (in this case exercise), behaviors that must be modified in order to properly address potential weight gain. But how ludicrous would it be to suggest that in order to maintain or lose weight you should stop exercising.
While this does not apply across the board for antipsychotics, it seems to map on pretty nicely to Latuda. I would seriously analyze and question my own lifestyle choices before jumping to the tragic conclusion that Latuda will only cause weight gain, or that even if you happen to be in the 8% who did gain weight your fate is sealed and that you should give up hope on being both happy and healthy; you'll have to pick just one.
I just started 20mg of Latuda daily after a long and serious bout of Bipolar depression. I also take 400mg of Lamotrigine and have been for about a year.
I am also a regularly fit and athletic. I eat fairly well and I run, swim, and bike on a daily basis.
I am going to do my best to maintain my lifestyle as is (understanding that if the drug starts to affect my behavior I will HAVE to adjust) over the next three months and regularly keep track of my weight. I am currently 6' and about 195 pounds.
Wish me luck, and I will be back with an update.
My sentiments exactly! Except that I am one who DOES come back to let people know that I am one of the "lucky" ones... one of the 90% to 99.9% of medication users that has never had a side effect beyond a mild headache or nausea with any of the various psychotropic medications I've taken over the years.
Not to belittle those that do, and there are some, but these boards are a bit over the top when it comes to implying that every user will ruin their life if they take these drugs. Well, people's lives are apparently not that good to start with so don't believe everything you read and give treatment a chance to give you a better life.
How are you doing? Update us please. Take care
I had been taking zeldox on the highest dose 80 mg twice a day for years for schizophrenia and could not stop gaining weight. So my psychiatrist put me on latuda I am taking two 80mg tablets at night and have been on it for about 4 months, in that time I have lost 10kgs natrually. The only problem I had with Latuda was nausea but have been put on Ondansetron 4mg for nausea to take an hour before I take the Latuda and it works perfectly. I have tried abilify and had no success with it but the Latuda helped me regarding my mental health and with weight loss.
I started Latuda 5 months after being on seraqul for almost a year. I lost 30lbs when I got off of seraqul. I also changed my thought process about food and snacking. I always seemed bloated on seraqul but it could of just been in my head. Anyways my experience with Latuda has been a long process but in the long run I'm enjoying life and 30 lbs lighter on this med! Good luck to everyone. I would stay stick with this drug at a semi low dose for a few months to see results.
The side effects are described as decreased appetite BUT weight gain. I've just started taking Latuda, 20 mgs and have experience increased hunger. Is the weight gain an issue with metabolism? I need to know if I can restrict calories and use will power to not give into the hunger or if I'm going to gain weight regardless. Seroquel and Abilify didn't work for me.
There is no such thing as "gaining weight regardless". Behavioral side effects cause the most weight gain, not metabolic issues, but we usually do the inverse: "it's my metabolism so why bother exercising" rather than "my diet and lifestyle cause most of my weight gain and not my metabolism"
Weight gain is caused by caloric surpluses. There are lots of things that affect this (including your metabolism) but the calculus doesn't change. Pills don't magically make pounds out of thin air.
I started latuda 12 days ago and have gained 12 lbs ..I do not gain weight..it is because of latuda and not my diet.i have plenty of weight I can add so not worried just yet
This is an old question that seems to have been reactivated, but I'll add my experience in case anyone else has the same question. I was obsessed with sugar when I was on Latuda. I literally had to make sure that there were candy bars with me at night - EVERY night - or I'd crawl out of my skin with anxiety. The medication worked fantastically - I was balanced for the first time in my life, except for the candy bingeing. I would eat a King sized Butterfinger every night, if not two, and it was completely mindless. I was also eating fast food for lunch and dinner every single day because I was starving and had no "time" to make myself something healthy, working a full time job and going to school, as well. Besides that, I didn't WANT something healthy. I was enjoying noshing on greasy fries and all things bad for me. I very quickly put on 50 pounds - in maybe 2 months.
It's impossible to eat that many calories per day and gain weight at that rate without another factor being involved, but my obsessive eating wasn't helping at all. When I stopped Latuda, I started eating only when I was hungry, I realized that I was full mid-meal and stopped eating, and I stopped eating candy and fast food, but I did give myself complete freedom to eat whatever I wanted, and I lost between 2-4 pounds per week ... until I started the next antipsychotic. They all do it. My psychiatrist just recently mentioned an over the counter solution to counter antipsychotic weight gain that is being discussed in psychiatry circles. Forgive me if I spell it incorrectly - inositol. She said, studies show that 2mg is the sweet spot, and taking more has no additional benefit, but it does help people with insulin resistance, helps to moderate a more healthy metabolism, and helps the pancreas work less hard on producing insulin. It's some kind of natural substance that works like glucose, I think (don't quote me on that - I only looked at it quickly online). She said that we are going to hold off on that until I start gaining weight on my current antipsychotic, then use that to see if we can stave it off. It will be an interesting experiment. I'd rather lose than just maintain. Yet I'd sure rather maintain than gain!!! Anyway, I hope this helps. :0) Meggie
I have also been on Latuda for I think about 8 months and have gained 40lbs:( I also have the fast food cravings and always feel hungry. Have you found anything after you stopped the Latuda?
Hi there,
Yes, I tried Seroquel but had too much daytime sleepiness. I then very briefly tried Saphris and had to stop due to blood in my stool. I then went to Abilify, where I have stayed. It doesn't work for me as well as Latuda... Nothing has... But at least the incessant eating stopped and I began to lose weight naturally over time. I really miss Latuda for mental health reasons. My psychiatrist has since told me that Latuda is known for heavy weight gain, while my general Practitioner said it was weight neutral.
Weight does appear out of thin air. Yes, your metabolism may affect the rate, but not the total amount. You don't breathe in pounds, you eat them.
If you're basal metabolic rate is 2,000 calories, you don't exercise, and you eat 3,000 calories a day, then that's 1,000 calories extra (a thousand calories is not as much food as you think). A pound of fat is roughly 3,500 calories. So that's roughly two pounds a week, or 8 pounds a month (16 or two months.) If you're deficit is 2,000 calories (your BMR is lower than 2,000 and you eat 3,500 calories for instance, then double it (32 pounds). Either way, the ONLY weigh to gain 50 pounds in two months is to have eaten 175,000 extra calories. Thats 50 pounds.
Either your time is off or you're not being entirely honest about what and how you ate and how much you exercised.
I been on Latuda since may 2016 and never gained weight but everybody is different am taking 80 mg
In clinical trials 8% of patients reported weight gain as opposed to 6.7% reporting weight gain while taking the placebo.
I gained 40 lbs taking this in combination with klonopin that I took at low doses. Still take klonopin but started weaning off. I lost 20 lbs since off Latuda.
It made me groggy after I took it at night a weird groggy, but it made me feel great in the day. Taking it at night was the only way it worked for me.
The approximately 300 calorie intake needed to eat when taking the Latuda is not good for weight. I was very active before on this medication and that changed where I went less and less to the gym.
I was very concentrated and it did help with my mental state, so I stuck with it. My doctor kept encouraging me to try to lose weight. Started Latuda I weighed 140 lbs after a year or so ending Latuda 180 lbs off for 4 months 160 lbs. (female late 20s 5' 4)
Weight affects your mind, so I inevitably ditched it.
I'm confused. The directions say to accompany the dose with 300 calories, not to add 300 calories on top of your existing diet! Just use a snack you already have as your dosage snack. And people wonder why they gain weight, jees louise...
Actually it is 350
I stopped abilify b/c of weight gain as well, I sartrted latuda, but, had severe nasea for the whole week I tried it,and no energy.
I haven't been on ability but I have been on latuda 40mg evey evening an the following day same effect no energy, an I have notice a good amount of weight gain I'm going to talk with my doc to see if I can get on adderall to counter act both energy an weight gain..
Abilify* sorry an I am on latuda for bipolar an depression.
With a good diet (I can't exercise) I've lost 20 lbs while on latuda
I was put on Latuda for the specific reason that it's not a weight gainer. I'd gained over 100 pounds in less than 8 months on Zyprexa and I'd been a skinny Minnie all my life so it wasn't like I had a weight problem to start with. I stayed on that for years though because it worked really well and several times kept me alive. But it's not increased appetite that makes you gain on Zyprexa; it's metabolic disruption. Latuda was just approved when I started developing pre-diabetic issues ftom Zyprexa's metabolic effects so my pdoc started me on it even though it was off-label for Bipolar at the time. It was the only atypical that didn't have weight gain as a side effect. I've been on it for 3 years now and weigh 93 pounds; it's a struggle to keep weight on, in fact.
I haven't experienced any other side effects at all in 3 years either and it does the same job Zyprexa did in 1 smaller dose per day. It didn't take long to work that I recall; I think if you don't worry about the weight non-issue and give it a chance you'll like it. Hope that helps!
You just stopped me from having a panic attack thank you so much
