I started out on 15 mg and was increased to 30 mg 2 months ago and now the 3o mg is no longer affective. Should I ask my MD to increase the dose or is it unusual to prescribe higher than 30 mg at bedtime?
Is Temazepam 30 mg at bedtime the max dose an MD will prescribe?

If you responded by saying that you were prescribed 60 mg of temazepam can you please share the doctors name and or location because I have not found one.
My psychiatrist prescribed 45mg of Temazepam for me. It has generally worked over several years but I had to go back to 30mg because of insurance (Medicare) restrictions. Now I have built up a tolerance, so I take it every other night, alternating it with OTC drugs and/or medical cannabis. Sometimes nighttime tea helps. Since I moved to another state I need to get a new psychiatrist. I'll see what he/she recommends.
About 3 years ago my dr. started me on ambien. I don't remember the dosage. But I didn't take them a month. One night I crashed my motorcycle in the yard and didn't know it until the next day. I woke up and went to the window and saw it in the yard. Then I noticed a big bruise on my hip and forearm. I got changed to 30 mg. temazepam. After a year I went to 60 mg. It's been almost 3 years now and they aren't as good as they were. They still help though and I'm lucky to have them.
My wife has been taking a 30mg every night for over 15 years and is now getting to not able to stay asleep and sometimes takes another 15mg to go to sleep. Now sometime s even that doesn't do it. Thinking about trying useing a 30 and a 15 when going to bed ???
I have taken Ambien before with really bad side effects & little sleep. I would take 10mg sleep 1-2 hours then take another 10 mg dose & sleep a few hours. Did this for a few year & lost my memory. I switched to 30 mg Restoril, I sleep better & have dreams now. I also take Soma for jaw spasms from my TD which helps me sleep. You do become tolerant with time. I still like it the best for sleep.
Previously, I was on Ambien and slept through everything, even the house shaking during a bad storm. Husband was also on Ambien for a very short time, due to he didn't know what he was doing after taking one. Dr. Immediately took him off of Ambien.
However, I was on 15 mg of temazepam for 4 mos and it didn't seem to help, so the my Dr upped my dosage to 30 mgs and it seems to be working great so far. Love getting 6-7 hours of sleep per night now.
I take Temazepam as well and some nights it just doesn't work. Unfortunately since it's a controlled substance it's regulated and 30mg is the most your Dr. can prescribe. I've found, as I see others also have on this feed, to get off of the Temazepam every few months and switch to something else, then go back and it works fine (raising the dosage will only be a never ending ladder to climb because you'll just keep building a higher resistance). Ambien ugh . . . I took that for years too, definitely don't recommend that! Belsomra is a newer medication that has a very different approach to sleep aid. I had to try it a few times for it to work but it's my choice for when I take a break from Temazepam. Has anyone else tried Belsomra?
My dr. gives me 60mg temazepam a month. If I take 2 at bedtime. It's so much better than laying there awake. I took ambien and had some sleep walking.
For years I took 2mg of xanax to sleep. I can't get that anymore . Took Ambien and sleep 4 hours. Then Halcion and it was great but too expensive. Then She ha be me Restoril and I took it at 8:00 and wad still awake at3am. Two nights in a row. So last night I took Ambien at midnight and slept good. So doctor said to go back to Ambien . Restoril is same as .05 mg of xanax. So i read from Google. I did get up and j eat with Ambien. What is the best thing to do?
I have been taking ambien 12.5mg CR for years. In the beginning I would fall asleep on the couch, wake up at 5am, get up, go to bed and sleep till 10 ish. Would sometimes find that I did something while asleep, eat or move chairs etc. but this hasn’t happened for years. Unfortunately, I have developed a tolerance for it and have been getting no more than 4 1/2 hours a night. I started on restoril 3 nights ago, first night 7 ish hours sleep, second 6 hours, last night 4 hours and so took a 2nd 30mg, worked quickly and slept till 10. I feel great, really the best I’ve felt in years. Plus restoril doesn’t give me the intense dreams. I don’t know if my DR will prescribe more than 30mg but I’m hoping.
Based on what I read here I took a total of 60mg of Temazepam in one night. I’m only prescribed 30, but I took first dose around 10:30, and second dose around after 3 am. I’m pretty sure it will be okay. I was kind of keyed up from the Eagles NFC win - I live near Philadelphia, so I think that’s why it didn’t really work. Or maybe I’m building up a tolerance. I also take 1.5 mg of Clonazepam at bedtime, but that’s for anxiety not specifically sleep. And I seemto drag the next day if I take more of it. My doc recently lowered my dose from 2 mg to 1.5 mg.
I had the same problem as you, After about 6 months it wasn't helping much. I asked my Doc about upping the dosage but she told me 30MG is the max. What she ended up doing to help me sleep (I'm disabled & in pain 24/7) was to prescribe Trazadone along with the Temazepam and that has been helping me for years now. Good luck, I hope you get it sorted out.
30 mg is about the maximum dose. On occasion, I have seen where a Dr will allow a dose then a second dose in an hour if the person has not fallen asleep. this medication is notorious for tolerance though. Even if you increase the dose, you will eventually beconme tolerant. You might talk to the Dr about other options. Have you tried Lunesta or Ambien?
I agree that temazapam builds a tolerance..
Periodically I will stop taking it for a month.to regain the effects. .I have been taking temazepam for numerous years..not only does it help me sleep, for 4/5 hours, but it helps with bad dreams. .I am prescribed 60 mg. A night. ..I highly recommend being very care full with ambien..I started it when I took a break from temazapamm. I had some very serious side effects..walking talking, and I tried to kill myself while on ambien..while asllep.. i have heard serious stories of people,
Driving ,eating, having sex, and being half awake. I take 60mg. Og temazapam A night..and find it very usefull.I have never tried lunesta. But takingba break from temazapam, lunesta may be better than ambien. .just my thoughts..I suffer from bipolor , and finding a med that works with no side effects is rather difficult. Best wishes to you..
I've had horrible experiences with ambient too. once i put pasta on to boil while sleep walking and nearly burned my house down. A fireman climbed my balcony and got in to wake me-the fire detector was on full blast and i couldn't here a thing
I too have taken Ambien, Lunesta, Restoril, and Klonopin over a span of ten years. I'm a stage IV melanoma. I've had Fibromyalgia for ten years. Ambien did not work at all for me. What people don't know it is a hypnotic drug. I was on 3 mg of Klonopin for several years and that help the best. Now I'm on Restoril and I feel as I might as well take nothing. But the Dr. Has me on a kind of cocktail. I take Trazadone, Seroquel, and Restoril. I'm a lot more lucid now but sleep is not good. I'm just praying for God to heal me of everything! Best wishes and prayers to you all.
Godsgirl-Sweet lady-my thoughts are with you and your healing. I have a friend who was very close to losing her life over melanoma-but she has gotten through it with careful vigilance. I too, had a melanoma but it was detected early and have since had one irregular mole removed-I understand the stress this causes. Best to you.
I, too, take a cocktail of meds at bedtime half doctor prescribed, half over the counter or herbal remedies. I did make sure to check with my pharmacist to make sure there wouldn't be any problems. I would recommend stepping up one med at a time and one dose at a time when it comes to the otcs and herbals so that you don't over do it. After taking medications, I read for an hour, get in bed, close the lights, turn on music or audio book or even T.V. shows (reruns). I'm on 30mg Temazepam, 50 mg Seroquel, 20 mg Baclophen, (a muscle relaxer), 50 mg Phenergan, (anti-emetic [nausea] and potentiator) and 1 mg Xanax. To that I add 100 mg Diphenhydramine, (Benadryl), 20 mg instant release melatonin, 20 mg extended release melatonin. One last thing: I also drink a cup of chamomile tea after taking my meds.
(One more thing: I used to have the worst RLS [restless leg syndrome] but in addition to all the above and a few others, I take potassium gluconate and magnesium and that mixture has made it so that I haven't dealt with RLS in years now... Just throwing that in because a lot of people with Fibromyalgia also have RLS!)
I have been taking Restoril 30 mg for 5 years along with 5mg of melatonin and 50 mg of benadryl all of which give me 3-4 hours of sleep. My doctor will not prescribe anything else or increase the Restoril so I discussed the possibility of trying edible cannabis, which I did and still do, and that had worked tremendously. I am able to sleep for 5-7 hours which has made my life much more manageable. I know a lot of people will not agree with this but I am a believer. I was never a fan of marijuana but read quite a few studies and spoke to a number of physicians and decided to try it. I'm glad I did.
