I'm diagnosed with bipolar and ptsd - got on Lithium over a month ago and so far so good - however, the dr. added 300 mg of Seroquel xr and I'm having a terrible time with the side effects and I want to stop immediately. Can I just stop taking?
How do I get off Seroquel xr - can't stand side effects?

So I have more of a question then a ‘response’ I just am new and unsure on how to post a question. But I take 350mg of Seroquel and I have literally gained 30lbs since November. Has anyone noticed a difference if they drop to 150mg for weight gain? I take that high of a dose because I have extreme insomnia ( I also take it for bpd, paranoia, ptsd and anxiety - but I’m on a high dose for sleep). Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
It sounds strange that the doctor would put you in 300 mg of Seroquel. So quickly actually I am not surprised
I want to stop taking them
There are few, if any, psychiatric medications that you can just stop and you should never attempt it on your own. Consult with the prescribing doctor for a reducing dose schedule to use for several weeks.
Stopping abruptly can have disastrous results ~ discontinuation syndrome, withdrawals, a rebound of symptoms it was prescribed for.
I tried stopping 2x the first was from 75-50-25 like doc said. Got off of 25 and started handing restlessness and pacing and wringing of hand. I’m trying to taper went back on this happened 2x. I don’t know how to get off without the anxiety. Which I have bad right now.
I take the Seroquel 150 xr been for months and it's been rough with the muscle stiffness , how should I taper off maybe a quart a pill for a week or two?
If you have been on Seroquel XR for over 4 weeks then you need to return to doctor today ; it's very important that we don't self medicate that is change our medication our selves if you can't get appointment perhaps you could break the tablet in half and take 100 mg s but on that dose until you get medical review.
Seroquel is an effective drug for bi Polar and also frequently used for anxiety and depression in lower doses I have recently increased Seroquel slightly until I see the doctor for review this was necessary as my partner was subjected to verbal attack... All the best and happy to reply
You can't just stop taking you must ween your self off ✊. But I wanted to join this conversation to say that Seroquel saved my life. Maybe . We all have different reactions - but for me - a cynic who never wanted pharma' in my life and instead became an alcoholic. My life is vastly improved. I must say that (I'm bipolar) I refused to take 300mg like my psych wanted , and I live a happy steady life in 150mg XR slow release. I don't want to be on this drug forever . BUT I experienced no weight gain or poor memory. So I just want people to know that it can work and it has made my life way more manageable. Just saying . I don't see why you should be on both Lithium and Seroquel - I think you need a better psych . It's one or the other as far as I can tell , but I'm not a doctor. Please everyone remember that drugs only work as well as the good therapists you have to administer and talk too . Do
n't trust people who prescribe with out really knowing your whole story and that you can relate and trust them . If you don't have those doctor/ therapists than keep looking they exist. There is a very real chance you could take less drugs with the right support. But you have to find that trusted support before you get off the drugs. All my heart and live too everyone suffering . Love ya guts . You've already been through the worst . You are stronger than you know, and definitely stronger than people who don't suffer from mental illness. No doubt !!! ✊
I talked with my doctor about going off seroquel. I was taking 200 mg at bedtime. I was on it for 5 years. I hated how it made me tired all the time. Anyways we are slowly in the process of getting me off completely. The first month I went down to 100mg then he dropped it to 50 mg for 2 months. I go see him tomorrow and I'm not sure if he is going to drop me to 25mg ( if there is such a dosage) or completely stop.
My experience coming off it was having a hard time sleeping through the night for the first week or so and I was very irritatable that first week too. But it wasn't unbearable like I thought it would be.
I'm now sleeping good and waking up at a decent time.
My advice is definitely talk to your doctor and come down slowly. If you completely stop I think most people will not be able to sleep at all. Good luck everyone!!
Hi! I am also trying to get off of seroquel. Been on it for a couple years. It has makes me keep weight on, hair is falling out, short term/long term memory is awful now. Did you start taking new medication right away when you finally tapered off of it?
If anyone is thinking of quitting any meds contact a dr. first, im down to one 300mg seroquel now , down from 600mgs, started tapering off about 2-3weeks ago, so far so good! I cant wait to get off this pill, whyn does seroquel work, because you tired all day long and usually in bed, it makes you tired and no emotions, i have been on it for ten years, quitting so my blood sugar will go down and im tired of sleeping all day long! My mood is good and no psychotic breakdowns or crying or anything like that!
Have you had any withdrawals?
Medical supervision is important here.
Previously went off medication went into denial about bi polar as an illness; my name is Joe, a qualified psychologist and going off Seroquel was a mistake but maintain that high doses create too much sedation and high risk of diabetes.
For serious cases of bipolar what works now is a mood stabilizer second anti psychotic and third SSRI anti depressants that also assist with anxiety
No ; medical intervention to cut down but please see your doctor or get a second opinion if you are not happy
I was on 600mgs xr seroquel, i have tried to quit it many times, i cut down my meds to 450mgs for about a week, last night i went down to 300mgs pill only, i am sleeping ok, mood is elevated and i feel pretty good, i have been out of bed earlier and blood sugar should go way down since Seroquel can cause diabetes, i cant wait to get off this evil drug, Am i worried about manicing and such, i would gladly take the crazy energy and i cant wait to be clean again, and off all psych meds! I am not telling anyone to stop taking their meds, its just what im doing at this point! 02-16-2017
Hey there,
Dear Akworley1:
Please never I repeat never try to go off your meds alone! You will end up on the psych ward. I seriously suggest that you talk with your Dr. about getting him/her to help to put you what is called a wean schedule. You have too: I know it is a slow process but it is with it. Elieve me! I take Seroquel as well at the moment. Anyhow all the best!
Helpfulness
Hi I was put on a very low dose of this for my anxiety and depression along with my citalopram. I've only been on it 2 weeks and I really don't like it, I feel just as anxious, I'm exhausted, my body randomly jerks and I feel like a zombie. I am down to 12.5mg and I'll wait to see my dr before I come off it as I think my meds need a complete change. I wish they'd have changed my ssri rather than just add more to the mix.
