It may be kidney stones, or a kidney infection, or something infinitely more serious. Please, never ignore this type of pain?
These eejits at my local Urgent Care are truly stupidos!! I should have gone to ER, but nooooooooooo, I just didn't want to interrupt my hubby's routine today, so my local (middle of nowhere!!) Urgent Care it was!!
They didn't even do an x-ray nor a scan for kidney stones!! Sent me home with Bactrim and something for nausea called Ondansetron 4mgs.
Dunno if these meds will help or not, we shall see...
If they DO NOT work I shall go to ER for some REAL doctorin' !!
Yup, REAL DOCTORIN'!! These people got thier med licensces at K-Mart!
I knew more than they did!!! OK, enough of my BS, how all of you doing?
Love you guys!!!

Actually the things most people dont know is who is a Dr and who is not (or who is a nurse and who is not). Most UC clinics are staffed by PA's or physician assistants who are trained and can write prescriptions but they dont have the training a Dr has. They usually work under a Drs license. I have met many very good PA's but there are some things that you are better off having a Dr diagnose. Going to an UC is ok if you have a cold or sinus infection, need stitches or an xray for a fracture and a cast but anything more serious you are better off going to the ER. Try the Bactrim, if you are not better in a day or two then see your PCP or go to the ER. Ondansetron is the same as Zofran which is a good med for nausea. Remember though that they treat for the most simple things your symptoms point to first. If they thought that your symptoms or exam pointed to a need for further testing they would have done so.
Hope you get better soon by the way!!
DzooB, I was just about to jump on you about PA's Then you did say there are some good ones too. I know what you mean having PA's running the clinics! In Odessa Tx. all the clinics are owned by doctors from India. My mother went to one of those clinics, seen by a PA and was given medication for H pylorie, turned out she had clotted off her entire right coronary artery. She died a few months later. This one doctor owns 5or6 clinics in Midland and Odessa! Should be against the law, for a doctor not at least be in the clinic. I could not start a vein harvest unless my doctor was in the room. Lv
I have known some PA's worth their weight in gold! -Just excellent healthcare professionals but they dont have the training and expertise a Dr has. There are just some things that should be diagnosed by a Dr. Once you are diagnosed then I'm all for a PA. Many times they explain things better and spend more time with you than a Dr will. Same thing with a nurse practitioner. My thing is that many times people dont really know who is caring for them these days. Nurses get blamed for stuff that is dont by techs, CNAs or MAs, Drs get blamed for stuff that is really PAs or NPs. We all have our place in the healthcare playing field but we are not interchangeable. I know that you understand what I mean! :) We have both been in this field a long time! I just read a really good Readers Digest article in the Nov 2011 edition about 50 Things Your Nurse Wont Tell You. It was a great article and mostly true! There were a few things I didnt agree with and have never done myself but a lot of it was spot on (and very funny!)
Hey Lara,
Now I know why I never went to 1 of dem places. I don't trust em. Sorry this happened to you. They're turning the sweet lemon sour :-(( Seriously, I am sorry this happened. Since I never went to those places that's about all I can say.
But this is also why I want a hand picked cardiologist to do the angiogram on me next. I just finished saying somewhere else that I respect the medical profession, and now you have this experience. It is scary.
Btw, that Ondansetron may be good for something other than nausea. My current doc says it stops wds. So maybe you should try and keep a little for the next time you feel them. I'd love to know if it works on them. He used to say Baclofen stopped wds, but it didn't help me last winter. The only thing that helped was more opiates. I really don't think anything can stop them on me. But that's me. Hopefully this doesn't apply to any of you.
Lara, Soooooo sorry to hear about your pain! Most of all them not really helping you. At the very least they should have done an X-Ray! You can see a kidney stone usually on just a plain abdominal X-ray. Do you have any blood in your urine? Did they check your urine for blood? They have a little dip stick they can place in your urine and check for what is called occult blood. (blood you cannot see). Bactrim is an antibiotic used to treat bladder infections. Are you running a fever with this? If you develop a fever with this you do need to be seen in the ER. I call those places (Doc In the Box) Hope you get better fast. Let us know! Lv
Thanx Dave!!
Yes there is blood in my urine, and tis not menstrual blood (eeewwwww, sorry bout that!!)
I MAY end up at the ER anyway. At the very least my doc will order a battery of tests!! ugh. Hate those tests!!!

lara,
did you get my email? I am so sorry for this merry-go-round of medical attention..or the lack thereof. what ftards, yes?
I say go to the ER anyway! They may send you home with a little screen, but they may also give you something REAL for the pain.
It's worth a shot!
Love ya,
~Jillynnie
I agree with Jillynnie, go to the ER anyway Lara.
Love,
And me two!!! I also agree!! :) Don't take chances on this sort of stuff, go get yourself checked out properly!!!
You all are correct, as usual, I most certainly should have gone to hospital and NOT Urgent Care!!! That place is like a time warp!! A visit to the 70's medically speaking!!!

I agree with the kmart comment. Lol! I'm ok and I'm glad you are doing better! I'm okay! Just dealing with some stress, and trying to keep busy! I do love you guys too! This site would not be the same without the regulars!
~ Christie
What about those who are not regulars?
Great tip of advice, me personally, I dont like going to ER unless I have to and just make a doctors appointment with specialists. I have scoliosis, probably need back surgery because how I haven't got it under control , but never ignore health abnormalities, it could be more serious than you think. :) I hope you do better
Pickles, Even if you are not a regular visitor to this site!!
May, I agree, I LOATHE the ER!! Should have gone there though and not the eejits at Urgent Care!!
You betcha K-mart special (NO disrespect to the store) the store that we had use to have some good things long time ago, only one now and when you say K-mart I get chills!!! I am so sorry they were not anything near what you needed! but if things don't help please do just as you said go to the ER
Caringsonbj (Billy)
Wait a minute, kmart has a doctor area?
Thank you. It's good to be loved. I am a regular on this site. Just checking in to see how you are. In my pea brain opinion, you probably need to see a Dr.. What your describing needs to be cared for by someone other than Urgent Care. Yeah, they may be good for some things, however, there are other matters that need a bona fide Professional. You take care, Christie. I have prayed for you, and God doesn't let me down.
Yup, some urgent cares are great and some... aren't. For me locally I prefer the urgent care to the ER, but thats just my ER. Bactrim is for urinary tract infections-an antibiotic. Ondansetron is a melt on your tongue anti-nausea drug, brand name Zofran. Way expensive even as a generic. If you were sick enough to have nausea with back pain, I agree, you likely needed a higher level of care. Oh, looks like you're better already and I bet you knew about the meds too (blush) so much for the newbie.
heartsgrace--be well anyway
Yes, they are what you say they are Sweet Lemon :) been there, done that numerous times. We could do better! They have a badge that says "professional" smucks they are. How are they even able to "practice" medicine? All those years of training and what do we get for our buck? Nada... take this and go home, if you dont feel better come back in 2 days.Making money they are. While our health suffers for it. I hope that you get the care that you deserve Sweet Lemon! Feel better soon! Pauline :)
heartsgrace and pauline,
You are both right. That's exactly what the UC doc said, take these and come back in two days if you aren't feeling better. And she was a DOC!! She really was a doc, her name tag said Dr. Blahblah anyway.
Seeing my physician tomorrow, so hopefully he can sort all of this out!!
Thank you to all who answered my Q!!!
sweet lemon

@sweets glad you will be seeing your doctor soon!
@pickles thank you and you are appreciated! :)
Hello all Im sort of new here, I had to throw my cents in, as well im lol @ the fact I thought this was the only town with a groovie ER...
Actually we have visiting phys, and then cheif of staff, so we never i dont think ever see the same one even if told to go back, which is 4 days, all our doctors are going to rid this town of Opiates, they DONT!!! give bigger then 5 vicoden for pain unless ur missing body parts, and never but never are you to go there with a back ache they will lable you pain med seeker for sure, I am proof, i have gone for kidney stone, i took to show that it truley passed, and one other for a strep throat that almost killed me , both times telling them i had my own pain meds, But i do understand the concern however i think that doctors basiclly stop testing people for pain aliements, they now test for addiction then go from there which is a doctor lableing its patient before its even seen , I dont think they should be able to see this until you establish a relationship, as im seeking doctor now and its the first thing i do, i think 85.oo just to pee for a doc is not worth the rest, i have about 4 85.dollar, bills from various doctor this last few months, '
anyway you all have a great week, i was just saying,
I hope @ The one whom had the back or kidney infect, i hope alls well n ur gettng better, thankx for reading, Lori
