for weight loss only. I'm not diabetic. What are the side effects that you are getting on this. I also read alot of people are cutting carbs and sugar. My pharmacist told me I didn't need to change my diet. How much weight did you loose and how long does it take to happen. Thanks in advance for your answers. Smileyhappy.

Hi
I am also for this reason since 10 Mar 2018 but I realised that I am getting pretty tired recently and not much of weight lost, hovering around the same figure even though I reduced my meals to twice a day
I am not too sure whether I belong to the group that will put on weight instead as my doctor warned me that if I am not a right candidate for diabetics I may put on weight instead
Does anyone experience this?
Thanks
Don't know answer either just starting it myself but curious also and you all seem very nice so thought I would sign in and I wish you good luck also
I took a weight management class to learn how to loose weight by how to eat properly. So I was prescribed this medication starting with one pill the first week then 2 pills. My doctor said 10 oz shake no more that 6grms of sugar for breakfast then 10oz for a snack before lunch & not to wait until u get hungry so u have to eat your meals before then. Wing yourself off of sugar, SODA & fruit drinks. No fruit shakes because you body doesnt know the difference if you drinking a all fruit shake or eating a bowl of sugar, chew your food and let your body process it. A deck of cards size meat or fish 2 or more cups of veggies and less of a cup of starch and fruit. The order you eat is important too. 1. Your protein, 2 fruit, 3 veggies then your starch last. Only use a table spoon of oil or butter to savor or cook/prep your food in (total) & season to taste. Ive been prediabetic for over 12 years and I have a family history of high blood pressure & diabetes in my family.
My enemy is my weight no matter what I did or changed the weight never dropped. My dr started me on these pills to help me loose weight so following the guidines given and meds in 9 weeks I lost 18 lbs. 2 lbs a week Eating before I get hungry and eating healthy snacks fruits, nuts, yogurts (less that 6 grams of sugar) you have to learn to read the labels just because it says low fat... they get you with the high sugar. It's usually Greek yogurt... and if you love sour cream it's healthier to use regular Greek yogurt that's sour and not sweet at all.
Will I was diagnosed about 3 years ago with type 2. you have diabetes from to much sugar in your system of course you need to cut back on the sugar and the carbs. I would suggest you cut back by cutting out all white starches such as bread instead eat wheat or whole grain. Pasta same way. I also have started exercising which has helped me lose the weight and keep it off. in the 3 years since i was diagnose and made the change to my diet and exercise i have lost over the years about about 50 to 6 0 pounds and kept it off. It is alot easier to change your eating habits then you would thing and there are so many things online that can help you. Try the weight watchers diet for 3 mos that will teach you how to eat then keep it up after not having to continue the weight watchers . They actually have a system just for diabetics. If you need further assistance please email me I will be glad to help.
Hello to all ! My doctor prescribed Metformin for me after a A1c reading of 6.9. This is my first week on it and is it normal to have such a tummy ache? I also had a ultrasound done and diagnosed with a fatty liver.Iam doing my best to eat clean and exercise.. Just wondering if The symptoms of Metformin subside or is this normal? Thank-you Kindly for any suggestions.
Hi I have diabetes 2 for two years I'm on four tablets of metformin 500 a day yes it can give you diarrhoea and tummy pains but it goes after a few weeks it has brought my blood sugars down dramatically excersise as much as you can and yes watch your carbs and have a treat now and then keep of sugar free stuff that will definitely make you go to the toilet you're better off with a little bit of chocolate then having sugar free I found out the hard way best wishes
Thanks for the support and inspiration. I'm absolutely cutting out carbs and sugar the best I know to do. At this point, I'm just avoiding bread and pasta all together. I'm sure down the road I'll learn how to have a small amount of healthy carbs. Congrats on your weight loss. That's really great and that you've kept it off gives me hope. I took all the "bad foods" out of my pantry and gave them away. I'm learning how to do this, lean protein, half my plate with veggies and if I have sweet potato or something to make it small. Weight watchers is great idea. My doc said I could call my insurance and see if they cover a diabetic coach. Which I'm planning to do. I may email if I have more questions. Thanks so much for the support.
I was given Mediformin for losing weight as well. I am pre type 2 diabetes... means I "might" get it in five years. So I do not find that I am having the same issues. I have not taken it like I should... I'm a bad pill taker but getting used to it. Any comments on this would be great. I hope I don't get nausea or diarrhea etc. from it. You guys mentioned different doctors saying different things... like the symptoms should go away and then the endocrinologist saying that you should stop taking it all together... well... my endocrinologist gave me the prescription sooo may be no one really knows. Sounds like the most reasonable answer, but if someone has taken it for a long time who was not diabetic and HAS lost weight, I would appreciate your comments. Thanks
Hi Snoopy,
My question was last year so I have since stoped taking Metformin. It made me very weak since I was not diabetic. Hope you do better on it.
Hi I was just diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes literally yesterday. I'm terrified. I start Mediforim tomorrow. 500 mg once daily. I had an idea I was diabetic and started a diabetic diet 2 weeks ago. I've lost 4 lbs. I am nervous about the medicine because I understand I will be sick to my stomach for a few weeks. My thoughts are huh? I fly out for my nieces graduation next week. I have family in a week later. Will I be sick the whole time? I don't know, but I've changed my eating habits drastically and i hope this medicine pushes the weight loss along. I'll let y'all know. Thanks for the info you've all posted.
I personally am scared to death to take it just found out Thursday I'm diabetic and my liver is not great either... Smh I don't want have to take this pill forever I hear there's been law suits do to metformin and people have died bc of the side effects..
smileyhappy,
how's things going now? it looks like you have been taking this for a couple weeks now is it getting any better for you?
I am new to this site and this is my first post. I was just prescribed the Metformin 500 mgs twice a day as well. I haven't started it yet. Of course I'm leery. My doctor prescribed it for weight loss but I'm also border line diabetic. So I'm not sure if this would work for me.
I've had chronic back pain for over 10 years and have been on and off so many different medications. But over all the only thing my history has perfected is my weight gain which has then caused more issues like depression. I can't do a lot of excersing due to the back pain.
I'd appreciate any feedback you can give me or anyone else that might read this as well. thanks!
Hi girlfrom...
If you read the other post from the other people you will see what others have written including myself. I actually took Metformin for 1 week only. I felt nauseated all the time and vomited twice. I felt like I was hypoglycemic but I don't have diabetes. My endocronologist said it was not great to loose weight and told me to get off it. I had stopped it the same day I saw her. Some people have diarhea with this med. Hope this helps you.
Hi girlfromhooterville!
I just wanted to tell you welcome to this site, you will find many kind and compassionate people here, and we love to laugh at times, OK, most of the time! So post away.
sweetlemon
Thanks for the comments. Not sure if I will even start taking Metformin. That's all I need is something that's supposed to be helping and its only making it worse.
Also thanks for the welcomes... all the post I have read seems like there is a lot of great people helping each other out that's why I joined this site. Plus I'm becoming some what of a connoisseur when it comes to pills, medications, and pain. If there is anyway I can help someone from going through some of the bad shit I've had to it would make me feel better. I'm sure I'm not the only one that knows the doctors don't tell you the ins and the outs of all medicines and then all of a sudden your in a hole and can barely dig yourself free.
With just the few things I have talked about if anyone needs to talk or wants to pick my knowledge send me a note I'd love to try and help
Hi girlfromhooterville,
You sound very knowledgable about medications indeed! You will be welcomed with open arms here.

I have not heard of this medication before. However I wish you the best of luck!! Keep us posted on how you feel while taking it and if it helps you to achieve a normal weight again. Blessings, Kasey
Thanks Kasey, I will keep you guys posted.
Hello Smileyhappy,
I was put on this medication for a while until they were able to stabalize my blood sugar, I can't give you answers as far as weight control goes but it is my wish that you do have good results with this and that you are able to loose the weight you desire! the one thing that I noted while I was on this medication especially about the first 2 weeks was I had a lot of stomach discomfort the thing of it was it improved over time and it is my sincere hope that (and it may not even bother your stomach at all) I wish you nothing but the very best! Caringsonbj (Billy)
Hi Billy,
Thanks, so far I am tired and a little light headed. I'm having wings for supper and I usually can't wait to eat them. But my appetite is changing already and I'm not sure how many I will eat tonight. I guess that's a good sign. By the way how are you doing? Lynne.
went back to the doctor, still on IV meds but I am very slowly starting to see a difference, She told me that going through as much as I'd been through it was going to be slow for awhile, I surely appreciate you asking and your concern, I appreciate everyone on here (Caringsonbj)
You are welcome! I have been having beatifull weather here. I hope you are too that always helps me feel better faster it seems. Lynne
I did not know this med was used for weight loss it is a med for those of us who are diabetic it lowers the blood sugar I would think if you are using it for any thing eles it would make you sick just my thoughts My self I can not take it it makes me sick and I am a diabetic
Hi Chattienana,
My psychiatrist prescribe it. He said his co-workers and journals he read said it was working well for some people to loose weight. We shall see how it makes me feel over time. Wish me luck.
Hope it works for you good luck
My husband felt dizzy, light-headed, tired, or very weak; stomach pain, nausea and irregular heart rate. But he did get used to it after awhile. Not sure how long. He did lose weight fast but he was also on a strict diet cause he is diabetic.
Hi Kytteneyes,
Yes, I felt really tired this morning when I tried to get up. Also tired today and a little light headed also. Lynne
Doctor told him that side effects should subside. Hopefully that's true.
Well I was feeling tired the first few days. It's been five days now I don't feel so tired after the first dose but after supper the second dose I'm still tired. Nauseaated a bit too. But lucky for me no diarhea. Alot of people seem to get that.
Yes I did forget to mention that one.
You are very right abotu those symptoms plus I could be looking at something and all of a sudden it would go blurry . That was a big sign for me . But all the other signs u mentioned are correct. Plus te diet and exercise is a big part of staying healthy with diabetes.
Sorry, I do not have any answers for you either but I am very interested to see responses and see how it goes for you. No change in diet or exercise? I find it hard to believe that a pill alone will cause much weight loss, over time. Wonder what the results would be if you did change your diet and some exercise? I'll be watching this and hoping for the best for you. Just call us your cheerleading squad!!
Hi ElizaJane,
I do eat a well balance diet and walk alot though. The meds are for diabetics but it also works for some people to loose weight. Lynne
