What's the difference bewteen HCL 500mg METFORMIN and ER 5000mg METFORMIN?

RxKnowledge 4 Nov 2014

the 500mg ER formulation is extended release. This reduces the stomach upset associated with the drug. However, it also is a bit pricier and not preferred by physicians. The 500mg IR (immediate release) is a fairly standard dose that can be tapered up simply by changing the dosing around. The ER tablet does not have this luxury.
