[This response may show up a few times... since my miserable computer is really at the point of my throwing it out the window... ]
I have had all the symptoms... and more. I have been housebound for a long time. Going out was not worth the risk anymore... and it just added stress. My husband probably can't remember what it's like for us to go out together.
A couple of weeks ago my dr gave me a script for Librax. [I went to the appt because I didn't eat that day] I can already see a difference. I hope it continues. I'm willing to wait for the full effect since my life has been at a standstill for far too long.
The med keeps me from running to the bathroom... has made a big difference in my back pain... migraines..abdominal soreness... swelling... gas..nausea... So far, I feel more normal that I have for a long, long time. I hope it continues because I'm not giving the Librax up without a fight. [I can look at a bathroom here at home and not hate it!]
How often do u take the Librax. I just started on it and I take it 4x's a day but yet I still have discomfort plus I take alit of Tylenol PM for the pain. I have been suffering with this for over 10+yrs and the meds will work for a while and then I'm back to square one and all the doctors looking at me like they don't know what else to do. I'm about ready to just give up
sis i think only solution is to avoid gassy food.. :(
I can take Librax up to three times a day with meals. I also find using a GOOD probiotic is really important. I am also now on 40 mg of omeprazole. Avoiding dairy and all grains can be very helpful,[read labels] as well.[as well as foods you know will get you in trouble] Check out the Gaps Diet online... I know people who have started on it and are doing really well. I have not started it yet. Also, eating smaller meals several times a day instead...
Hi I am commenting on this for my sis, you sound a lot like her. I just message her to see if this is something she can try. I am the other way ,can't go at all with out taking something. Thanks for your knowledge.
There is one thing more that i want to discuss with that ... my brother is also suffering from such symptoms ... and he really likes to take medications ... hahahaha ... well the thing i wanted to share is that doctor has suggested him another medication for this problem ... that is itopride hydrochloride ... following is the mechanism of action of this medication taken from wikipedia
---
==Mechanism of action:==
Itopride increases acetylcholine concentrations by inhibiting dopamine D2 receptors and acetylcholinesterase. Higher acetylcholine increases GI peristalsis, increases the lower esophageal sphincter pressure, stimulates gastric motility, accelerates gastric emptying, and improves gastro-duodenal coordination.
---
Pin point is "It stimulates gastric Motility" that is main cause of the IBS problem that we use to sit aside and we don't do exercise and we don't do walking and jogging stuff... thats why our "Gastric & intestine Motility" is decreased and its not working properly...
Well ... i found this natural treatment in "Ginger" it really increases the motility.
well ... this time i am unmarried and a student and a very busy person..can't spare time to make some Ginger chop & fry to eat..hahahaha... Well in near future... i am seriously looking to these three Tips to improve my health but this time ... i'm lot busy ... just going to complete my Masters...
Tips
1. Exercise
2. Ginger
3. Warm milk
:)
hi delia i have ibs also and my doctor perscribes omeprazole tablets they excellent for bloating and excess acid build up, so have a word with your g.p. hope you get help. x x
Dear deila ,
thanks for your sharing experience..
please tell me ... don't you feel you are addicted to this drug? ..i feel when i use to take this medicine.. it relieves the symptoms ... but when i use to stop this medicine .. i feel increase in acidity ...
then i use to drink warm milk to recover from this acidity ... warm milk really helps me in acid problem & constipation but it cause little bloating ... but you can say i am totally dependent on the warm milk :) ... its natural and its healthy and its really helps me ...
All medicines have side effects... these are relieving in one way and other way creating some other problems as well...
Hi, i just wanted to mention also that my friend has IBS and uses Omeprazole which prevents so much irritation in the stomach, etc. It works very well for her.
Hi sorry i didn't see the above comments before i wrote this!
no problem ..well thanks for your comments..
Treating IBS involves treating the symptoms. Depending on your particular symptoms, stool softeners like Miralax or anti diarrheals are used. Low dose antidepressants in the tricyclic category are often prescribed for the stomach, intestinal, and back pain.
A doctor is the best to advise you as to what low dose antidepressant would be best for you.
Hope you are feeling better soon,
Laurie,
Laurie i am really thankful to you for a great advise.. i'm 28 years old and from almost past 5 years i'm facing this problem... i have consulted many doctors and all doctors prescribed medications like "omeprazole 20mg ,esomeprazole 40mg , Entamizole (Metronidazole + another ingredient) " it helps but when i use to stop this medication ..the same symptoms comes up again and again... where as i use to complete the course of medicine... i think these medicines are not the cure to this problem..
What you have suggest ..Miralax & anti diarrheal's.. can you guide me about this a little bit more so that ... What is the Active ingredient of "Miralax" ..i'm asking because if its not available in our country then i could take alternative brand with same ingredients..
and suggest any Anti diarrheal (name it please) which is really effective...
May God bless you..
Hey,
The common name for the antidiarrheal is loperamide while the common name for the stool softener is polyethylene gycol. Both of these should be found at the pharmacy (chemist).
As far as the antidepressant, you could try amitriptyline or nortriptyline. But as I said before the doctor is the best to advise on this as he/she knows all your health conditions.
Hope this helps,
Laurie
thanks a lot...
Laurie, have to comment on your answer. I have IBS too, & with all my back problems, I was really having trouble with stools. Couldn't feel if I had to go or not ( what a horribel thing to discuss). Anyway the gastro doc put me on Mirlax, double the normal dose, & I had to wear diapers! I finally just quit it, & went to a bulk adding type of thing. (Doc had told me oh, well, live with it"!) What I'm saying is be prepared with these products! I would suggest Psyllium 100% natural husk for the constipation part anyway. The bulk should help with the diarrhea too.
mrfaud2007, might also you should type into the search for miralx cause it's gots lots of side effects, & can't be mixed with a lot of other things, even over the counter!
Dear marry Thanks a lot for answering... can you tell me whats your age ? and since when you are suffering from this IBS? and what medications you have experienced and what were reactions you observed???
and what u said about miralax ? you suggest that or not?
mrfaud, no I don't mind. I am 64 now, but the IBS has been with me for probably 30 years mostly. As I said I quit the Miralax because it makes you go constantly! Of course everyone is different, & will react different. Also my doc had me on a double dose. I have found a high fiber diet has worked best for me. I do take Ompraozole, but for acid reflux problems. I read what you said about your brother & it sounded like you found your answer, of ginger root, which is very good for digestion & also upset tummies. Hope I you get your back & head pain checked out because I don't believe they are related. Sounds like you have some disc problems too. I hope not, but good luck & let us know how you are doing, Mary
mrfaud, sorry, I forgot you asked about other meds for IBS? No one ever gave me anything. Told me to tke stool softeners & I believe one doc told me I should take Metamucial. Mary
You are of my mother's age... so to me you are just like my mother :) ...
actually once i gone to doctor for my back pain... then he was giving me the medications of back and joint pain..but after taking medications and 2 or 3 experiences doctor was confused that pain was still there... then he found out that it was all because of Gas... and i found the reason of pain that ..
i had an habit of stopping the gas in stomach often ... instead of releasing it that... but now i don't do that ... and it really helped me alot... but the problem is when it stops its self in stomach or intestine ..then it causes a little pain...
well thank you my son... Try taking "Beano" before you eat. It also helps with the gas. It's a food enzyme. I found out about 15 years ago that I have food allergies, & any time I eat something I'm allergic too milk products (proteins), corn including fructose, corn syrup etc... which is in everything, I get the IBS problems! Queery, huh? Well I try to avoid, but ice cream gets to me once in awhile! :( At any rate, have you or your doctor considered this? I know when I'm being very good about my food (boring) I don't have near as many problems. I must add tho', high fiber is gassy:( I wish you all the best, & feel free to contact me anytime.
no mother doctors always talks about the medications ... in fact i think they don't know about the cure... and i feel IBS has not cure since today in allopathic treatment ...
and more over they are not expert of the diet...
i have a contact of a nutritionist ..once i was on his diet plan and it really helped me .. but then i got busy in my studies ..and now i am stuck ... when i will be free from studies.. i will surely contact him...
i too have ibs and i kept complaining about hurting and my doc had me swollow this pill which took pictures as it went down .come to find out i had acid reflux in my intestines and also had some cysts .doctor ended up removing some 6 inches of my small intestines .
i guess what i am trying to say is please go see your doctor to make sure that it is just ibs and nothing else more serious going on with you!
we are all different and meds work on us differently .i am on some serious pain meds that will stop me up and maralax works for me of course i am on something for acid reflux too!
i hope you can get some relief soon! and i wasn't trying to scare you just want you to make sure all is well inside ! i learned the hard way .doctor told me he thought all my pain was in my head until he did the pill test then he told me i was right cause i kept telling him something wasn't right !
acid reflux in your intestines is very very rare and i was lucky they caught it and the cyst cause it would have turned into cancer ! hoping you the best God bless!
@brenda,
thanks for concern and sharing your views ... but as i said earlier that i already consult not just one but more than 4 doctors including gastrologists also ... they know whats the problem and they are right... that i am suffering from IBS ... its not the worst condition... its just you can say primary symptoms ... but when i use to eat the favorable diet followed by some activity like exercise i feel no trouble ... but when i use to eat the unfavorable things which are not suitable to eat in IBS condition such gas oily fried food ,gassy food ... then it cause trouble to me...
by the grace of God .. i don't feel any pain in stomach nor in intestine so its not the acid reflux surely... because in that condition you feel pain ... but i do experience irritating bowls often... thats because i am careless in diet plan... but i feel i have to change my self in eating habits... & activities like exercise is must...
It is so nice-not really- to see others with IBS.I have had this most of my life and it is just miserable.I also have severe headaches to go with the IBS and am having a MRI of the brain and a CT of my intestines to see if we can give me some releif(sp). At times I can't work for days due to the headaches and I am always ,well, constipated at the time and end up having to take ducolax.I have tried high dose fiber, probiotics and a natural.chemichal free laxitive to no avail.Nothing seems to really work on a regular basis.Hoping the test help. And going to try some of your suggestions after I talk with my GI Doc.Thank You Every one,J
I have had IBS forever. I have had meds that helped but recently my dr gave me Librax. I have been taking it for about a week and a half and I can see a difference!! Finally... something that works on all the miserable symptoms. I was living on advil, which helped the inflamation and pain to a degree... now I just take the Librax. I'd ask the dr about it... I know I'm not giving it up...
I'm 69 yrs old, and had IBS diagnosed for about 45 yrs. I've found that walking helps to get rid of the gas, bloating and cramps. I don't allow myself to curl up with cramps and lay on my stomach no matter how much it hurts. Any anti-gas type pill will help reduce bloating and pain. Diet is a large factor-no spices, no carbonation, let food cool down and avoid icy drinks-keep a log and see if you have trouble after eating a hot meal with ice water, etc- avoid caffiene, alcohol, sugar, substitute sugars, fats, apple peels, no chocolate, etc. I'm a person that tends to have diarhea, but I sometimes cycle between that and constipation. I use Citracil-metamucil every day-I take minamial amounts during loose stool episodes to keep it from getting hard and packing up, which causes constipation. I had one diarheria episode that lasted over 90 days- I lived on broth and water, then white rice and baked sweet potatoes. It took me almost a year to recover from that.
I take Librax and Zantac as medications. I prefer Librax, also a mild tranquilizer, over other meds, as it relaxes the intestines, without causing constipation or diarhea. I've had trouble with loperimide not stopping diarhea and larger doses plugging me up. I've also had vitamin B6 and B12 deficencies, probably because of the IBS. I'm 5' 2", and at 120 lbs-I had to wear X-large sweat pants for bloating after the bad episode. Believe me any anti-gas pill is a blessing, along with walking. Drink lots of water too.
