I would like to hear from others who have been prescribed Topamax for weight loss. Not so much those who have used it for seizures or migraines and experienced weight loss as a side effect, but those whose doctors prescribed Topamax as an off label weight loss drug.
I have personally been taking Topamax since March 1, 2009. I have gone from 295 lbs to 230lbs (to date) and continue to lose.

I was prescribed Topamax two weeks ago for off-label use for my fibromyalgia, and I have noticed, although I'm still titrating up (am at 75 mg/day right now with the ultimate goal being 150 mg/day) that my appetite has decreased significantly and I've lost six pounds. I have not, however, noticed a change in taste in carbonated beverages that a lot of other people mention -- at least not yet -- nor a change in the taste of food or particular food cravings. I'm just not that hungry very often, and when I do eat, I don't need to eat much to feel full. I gained 20 pounds in 10 weeks on Neurontin, so I'm delighted with the weight-loss side effect of Topamax.

i was given neuontin, well, i actually requested it, but its still sitting here. im so glad i didnt start it, especially since people are sayin that it puts on more weight. i keep on gaining for no reason, other than maybe my age and dont really excercise, but i never did anyway... i luv when the docs say, excercise..ya, right ! with fibro and cfs, not to mention my arthritis and stuff, ummmmmmmm, i think most of us can relate to our excersise pretty much consists of daily living habits, if that !!

I've been on Topamax for a few months now, and my dosage is up to 200 mg/day (100 mg a.m., 100 mg p.m.), and I've lost about 17 pounds. It does help with appetite control, and it is helping some with the fibro -- mostly with morning stiffness. But I agree about the whole "get more exercise" deal the docs like to tell you; there are days when it's a struggle to take a shower, put on makeup, and go to work, much less even *think* about exercise. It's great in theory, but far more challenging in practice. Hope the Topamax is working well for you, though. :)

I too am titrating off of Gabapentin, 1500mg/daily due to excessive weight gain. I gained 11% of my total body weight, 17lbs. in 12 weeks. I am eating low carb foods which always worked for me and I am still gaining weight. Switching over to Topiramate.

The second day after taking topamax I bought a carbonated beverage and I could be strand the taste of it. Also the only other side effect I have is the pins and needles in my hands and feet which I don't mind. I wish you the best of luck on your journey.

Topamax (topiramate) is a seizure medicine and is used to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least 2 years old. Topamax is also used to prevent migraine headaches in adults and teenagers. Because weight loss was one of the most common side effects of Topamax an off-label use is as a weight-loss drug. The specific mechanism of how Topamax brings about weight loss is not yet understood.
I haven't used Topamax myself but there are reviews on the link below. Hope it helps.
