I would like to hear from others who have been prescribed Topamax for weight loss. Not so much those who have used it for seizures or migraines and experienced weight loss as a side effect, but those whose doctors prescribed Topamax as an off label weight loss drug.
I have personally been taking Topamax since March 1, 2009. I have gone from 295 lbs to 230lbs (to date) and continue to lose.

i went on lamotrigine 18 months ago for mood instability and put on 15 lbs ( even though weight gain is not a side effect associated with that med!) my doc agreed to change my medication. we gradually reduced my dosage and at the same time he put me on topamax after 4 weeks i was completely off the lamotrigine and on 150 mg a day of topamax. i have noticed some tingling in my hands and an occasional delay w/word retrieval, a reduced appetite and i have lost 4 pounds. he JUST increased my dose to the 150 on friday and idk if i will need to go to 200 eventually since that is what i was taking w/the lamotrigine. i am happy to see the weight come off as i exercise regularly and am careful w/my diet so it was very frustrating to watch the scale continue to creep upwards and have people tell me it was my diet and exercise causing weight gain when i knew i was not doing anything differently!

I was just prescribed Topamax at .25 mg last night. I had a bad reaction to Gabapentin and also gained 20 lbs. I have bipolar 2, social anxiety, anxiety, depression and mania. I was put on this for mood stabilization but also in the hopes it will help me lose weight. I am at 205.6 this morning. I am a night eater so hopefully this will help. I wanted to post this to keep a record of my successes if any. So I will keep checking back. I am also already on Prozac 10 mg and Clonazepam 1 mg. My age is 64. Female.

Hello - I stopped taking Topamax several months ago (cold turkey, I know, not recommended and thankfully without incident). I have since GAINED about 20 pounds. I have also had a partial hysterectomy so I wasn’t sure what the culprit was. It dawned on me yesterday when driving to my doctor for a med check that right around the time that I stopped taking Topamax was when I started putting the weight back on. My doctor gave me another prescription for Topamax - I will keep you all posted!

I just started tonight with 25 mg which I will only take 1 time a day right now. I truly hope this works for me. Usually when I take a prescription drug for appetite control or weight loss it doesn’t work for me. I am diabetic and my HgbA1c has never been above 6.8 which is good for a diabetic, but in three months it went up to 8.8. If anyone knows anything else to do please let me know. I’m limited on exercise because I just had knee surgery. Keeping sugars below 100 grams a day and carbs low. Going to drink diet supplement shakes for breakfast and lunch. Eat a small meal for suooer. Have some healthy snacks too. What else can I do? I get very discouraged when I don’t see progress quickly. It doesn’t help any when u have family that eat all this good stuff in front of u while your eating a shake or carrots. Someone please help me with this. Thanks in advance.

i have been on Topamax for over 22 years. I am on it for epilepsy. After being on many other epileptic drugs which caused massive weight gain(40kg), I started on Topamax and got down to my lowest weight which was 42kgs until my body started to adjust to the drug I then had a weight gain to 52kgs where I stayed quite happily until 5years ago when menopause set in and now I have gained almost 40kgs. I am still on the same dosage of 100mg x2 daily that I have been taking for all those years. I do have some memory lapses and pins and needles still, mainly in my feet but it is better than most of the other drugs they have had me on. When I was put on topamax it caused nausea and vomiting everytime I ate and diarrhea, but I haven't had those symptoms for years. I think the longer you are on it the more your body may build up a immunity to the weight loss side of the drug. That is what seems to of happened to me a least

Just finished week 1. Taking it for migraines and weight loss. Not sure if i’ve lost weight yet because my monthly came and water retention can hide results. I take 25 in the morning and 25 in the evening... tiny little pills with punch... pop tastes gross, hands and fingers are a bit tingly and definitely a bit slow with thinking of words. Nothing that’s really worth getting worked up about, but i am watching. I’ll post updates.

I just started taking Topamax (generic) yesterday at 50mg. About 2 years ago i was diagnosed with Bipolar 1. They put me on a bunch of different medication and I gained like 80 lbs (didn't think it was possible to gain so quickly). Anyway my doctor slowly changed my medications to things what were more weight neutral but i still have these 80 pounds to worry about.
So far one thing I've noticed is that I've been running to the bathroom every 45 minutes. That's the only change (well it's only been one day). I plan to keep posting good or bad or neutral, but I wanted my first post to be right at the start of me taking this medication.

Hi Kosmicfaery! How long did it take for you to lose weight your first month or two?
I just started taking 25mg of topiramate once a day, 3 days ago (and will go up to 50mg a day starting tomorrow) to prevent migraines. So far I haven't really noticed a change in my appetite or the way food tastes, but I have lost 3 pounds. I also noticed that I am losing more hair than normal (eek). And I haven't had a migraine either! Though it's only been 3 days since I started taking the medication, so it's hard to tell if it's from the topiramate or not. I mean, weight fluctuates anyway, and hair loss could be due to stress or something else entirely so it's impossible to tell what it's from.
Anyway, I just wanted to say to people that are afraid of the side effects... you won't know how it's going to effect you until you take it. Maybe ask your doctor to start you on a low dose and work your way up. But if you and your doctor have decided that the benefits of you taking this drug outweigh the risks, don't scare yourself too much by reading all the horror stories about the side effects online. Discuss it with your doctor, listen to your body, and give it a try. If it effects you badly you can always wean yourself off of it (with your doctor's help of course). But you won't know until you try. I just say this because I was really terrified to take it myself. And I have a history of having bad reactions to lots of different types of medications. My drug allergy list is ridiculously long which makes trying a new med even more scary for me. But I am tolerating this one very well so far. I am hoping the weight loss isn't a fluke either, since that's the side effect I am most looking forward to lol.

I was just prescribed Topamax to take alongside Wellbutrin for weightloss/night binge eating, I am confused about when to take it. I am supposed to work towards taking two pills a day ( 50mg). Should I take one morning and nigh, two together, or take them later in the afternoont? Has anyone had any side effects like either sleepiness during the day , or, insomnia at night?

I used Topamax for weight loss for about 8 -9 mo's .I had to stop it because I was losing too much weight and even when I stopped I continued to lose weight , I looked gaunt and way too skinny. It was horrible . I have finally begun to put some weight on and look so much better and feel better. I even get compliments from friends and family on how much better I look. So please be careful taking this so you don't look like a walking skeleton. Good Luck !
