All the generic drugs manufactured and distributed by Malinckrodt pharmaceutical, including amphetamine/Dextroamphetamine quad salts (Adderall IR) and Hydrocodone bitrate (Norco) are not the same in any way compared to the branded products, M365 5/325mg, M366 7.5/325 and M367 10/325mg are all made by Mallinckrodt pharmaceutical company and they differ a significantly different amount from the so called “20% allotted variances” between a brand name and generic medication, as is the case with most generic drug manufacturers today in the current market,
the government has initiated a new series of policies and regulations that allow pharmaceutical manufacturers to not only add/remove more than the allotted 20% of the API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) but they can also add additional APIs to a degree to make up for the difference in the actual product so long as they determine the other entity is “bio equivalent” and/or they are able to add/remove a molecular structure or alter the molecular composition of the API if they are doing so to “provide a safer and more efficient” drug. The government is not properly regulating or even conducting proper audits of the pharmaceutical companies that are making/distributing these generic formulations, especially those that are being shipped from other countries, take their generic Adderall for example, which currently under “investigation” for contamination,
Adderall is a “supposed to be” combination drug containing four different salts of amphetamine. It’s a racemic mixture of a 3:1 ratio of the two different types of amphetamine enantiomers which are Dextroamphetamine and levoamphetamine and the drug is “supposed to contain the following:
amphetamine aspartate monohydrate
25% – stimulant
(12.5% levo; 12.5% dextro)
amphetamine sulfate
25% – stimulant
(12.5% levo; 12.5% dextro)
dextroamphetamine saccharate
25% – stimulant
(0% levo; 25% dextro)
dextroamphetamine sulfate
25% – stimulant
(0% levo; 25% dextro)
However, there have been increasing reports of the presence of alternative stimulant components which are making up for the companies that are intentionally using smaller quantities of these four salts, with some reports suggesting that they are adding the drug methylphenidate (commonly known by the brand name Ritalin and Concerta.) and even though these drugs are technically “stimulants” they have very different characteristics that can lead to very dangerous and potentially fatal outcomes.
It’s not just generic versions of norco, and it extends to all generic drugs, with most originating from the increase in the overseas companies, but in addition, the name brand of Norco has been discontinued by the manufacturer and the Tris is the “authorized generic” version of the brand name product, which is the G307 10/325 hydrocodone bitrate/acetaminophen and authorized generic drugs are held to a higher standard than their generic counterparts and are generally the exact same as the brand name with the exception of the imprint, the size, color and even the inactive ingredients used for the product are identical in every way. They’re normally sold at a slightly higher price than generic brands, but the quality is assured and they are usually even manufactured in the same facility that also produces the name brand.
There may be inconsistent batches of the same medications from time to time, and some are more or less potent than the previous batch. This is true across the board and not just a generic drug issue.
That being said, I can’t stress this enough but please consider, before you leave the pharmacy that you check the manufacturer which is always printed on your prescription labels, either by name or the abbreviation, if you’re not sure then you can look up the manufacturer using the NDC number on the label and if it’s a company that you don’t know or that’s coming from a different country, I would strongly recommend you to speak with the pharmacy manager about possible replacement, because even if they’re similar to the brand name products, the difference in the inactive ingredients can have a significant impact upon how well your body will respond to it.
Generally speaking, if you’re looking for a product that’s as efficacious as they were about eight to ten years ago, I’m sorry to say that it’s not possible anymore, as government regulations have forced even the name brands to alter their formulas to prevent misuse and abuse, they have also required the companies to add an ingredient that effects the rate of how quickly the drug is metabolized into the blood stream as a way of making the drug less appealing for recreational use, which has led to the massive loopholes that these companies are going through to cut any and all corners to make the cheapest possible product while also making the most profit, at the cost of the patients who are having to rely on the drugs to live a somewhat normal life.
Please do not believe in the ridiculously asinine words that your physician or pharmacist is telling you, if you’re not comfortable with the medication or brand you use then you have a right to refuse and request the brand that works best for you. Please everyone stay safe and have a great holiday season!
