I received shot in my hip on 8/29 and have slept only 2 hrs, a nite since then. I cannot even work now, job is very physical. Am nervous, shaky, whole body twitches. Finally decided to take Dr. advice and take Xanax last nite ( only 1/2 pill) It did calm me down and help me rest, but now feel out of it, and still shaky. How long does this anxiety, nervousness last? This was my 1st shot. Also am afraid to drive much. Never really took any med but aleve. Just want to know how long these effects typically last. Also, don't have much appetite, just nervous eating. All my doctors tell me they have never seen this happen before. ( I really don't believe them) Also, should I go to cardiologist or neurologist ? ( having some chest pain and numbness in left arm) I don't want to take much of the Xanax, says it may be addictive, and don't need more side effects. Help

Could you be more specific about what the shot was for? Was it for arthritis? A trigger point injection? Everyone reacts differently to different meds. The xanax will help you to relax for sure & probably help you sleep. You will not get addicted unless you are on them for a long time my friend. I had that shot in my hip , actually 8 at one time for trigger point injection, & it put me down for 3 weeks, but I have really bad problems with bad back, sciatica, etc... I wouldn't think you should be having this much trouble. The shot is usually given to alleviate pain, and is usually given with an anestetic so you should have had immediate relief, & maybe some soreness later. If you are having chest pain & left arm numbness go to the ER immediately. If you do not have anyone to drive you, call 911. These are signs of a heart attack. It could be angina pain, which is not as serious, but do not take a chance...
Mary is right, the shot should not do that. I use to help the doc do these. You need to go th the ER NOW or call 911 NOW. good luck and God Bless. Von
I use to have them in mt shoulder never had a reaction like that either I agree that is not normal anytime you have that much anxiety pain and gittering and numbness from a medication that wuld definatly be a sign for me to go to the er please do let us know how u r take care please got the er
Thank you so much for your help. The shot was for hip pain ( no arthritis was found, they think it is coming from my back- I also have lower back pain and sciatic) I do also have numbness from a pinched nerve in my neck/shoulder. I think the rapid heartbeat and pounding is from the cortisone It seems that these episodes occur every 12 hrs or so. and then get a little better, like the cortisone is on some kind of time-release I am not doing anything stressful. just resting at home. Would like to go back to work, but my job involves a lot of driving, Am glad to hear about the Xanax, will just take a bit if necessary, but 1/2 pill made me out of it. Have you heard about how long effects of cortisone last from 1 shot, ? pharmacist says I probably just have to wait until I get it out of my system. The hip actually feels a little better, but these side effects are ridiculous! Thanks again, Mary, please keep in touch.
Glad the shot has helped your pain. I have taken cortisone by injection & orally & have not had the reaction that you are talking about. Could it just be that you are nervous about having a reaction? Go to the top of this page & go to Drugs A to Z. Look up Cortisone by injection & see what the side effects could be. If you are having any listed that concern you, please contact your doctor. Good luck to you, & please let us know how you progress...
I got a cortisone shot two days ago and since then I have been having awful anxiety... the house is also a wreck and my husband refuses to help me clean it up... I am NOT going to clean it... he should help me because I am having so much anxiety... I also haven't slept in two nights... should I call the doctor for an anti-anxiety medication?
Any comments are welcome! Thank you very much~
I have had two trigger point injections for chronic low back pain resulting from complications from fusion surgery. 4-5 weeks after each shot, I too still experienced insomnia due to a nervous tension and tremors in both arms. The doctor told me this was a rare but known side effect of corticosteroids. She thought it should not last more than 6-8 weeks after a shot, but looking back over my timeline, that prediction doesn't pencil out. She also stated that sleep deprivation itself could prolong the effect, and that temporary use of a sleep aid would be indicated. Long term she suggested that for future shots, we could either change steroids or eliminate them altogether. The injection should still address the trigger point, with either anesthetic or even a "dry" needle as the steroids are not therapeutic per se, only prophylactic to minimize inflammation from the shot itself.
Exacerbating my circumstances is the fact that I have two young children who themselves contribute to sleep and anxiety challenges. The good news is that the injections have helped me significantly with the chronic pain I have battled for over 15 years and I do think the side effects are dissipating and will be temporary. It is very frustrating in the meantime to have one challenge replaced with another. Good luck. Let me know if you find out anymore definitive answers. I don't feel your pain, but I empathize.
Trust me. Those long acting steroid injections cause horrible side effects. Mine goes back 20 years. I was given one for allergies. 3 days later I started having severe anxiety. I felt my heart pounding I could not sleep at all and felt adrenaline pumping constantly. I lost 3 pounds over a weekend. I was at the doctor constantly and they could find nothing. They said that the steroids would never cause that. well I know for a fact now they cause a lot of problems. It was supposed to stay in my system 3 months so I was stuck. All they could do was put me on Xanax and I h ad to take 4 a day to even be able to stand it. I had to quit work. Finally 6 months later it started to subside and was such a relief. Doctors still said it wasn' t the steroids. Well later my back went out and they did it again against my better judgement and the same thing happened. I spent an entire year being absolutely miserable. To this day I will never allow a shot like that.
I even came down with severe asthma and wouldn't take steroids. If you need them and have no other choice take the pills because they will get out of your system quickly. Now even my doctor agrees with me. And now my son is dealing with the same thing. Don't ever let them give you the long lasting shot.
steroid injection 10 weeks ago for low back pain. Palpitations, heart racing. Waking up with heart racing, I see the palpitation and nervousness comments on this site. Can these episodes of palpitations cause damage to the heart. They seem to be getting lesser in intensity but still there.
I have had at least 20 epidurals of cortisone in my right hip at the rate of 3-4 annually and do not recall any side affects. I am an 86 year old male full of arthritis across my back, stenosis, and hip pain that runs down my leg. As the day goes on and my body warms up, the pain subsides nicely but in the mornings I am very uncomfortable until at least noon. Yesterday I had my first caudal injection (tail bone area by the coccyx) and I felt wonderful for about 12 hours. First injection in this area instead of the hip where your handkerchief is in your back pocket. Lately my doctor said the hip area was so full of stenosis that it was very difficult to empty the syringe so he used the other area yesterday. I attempted sleep at 11:00PM and realized I was wide awake with no hint of being sleepy. I took a 0.05 Xanax as usual but it was like eating candy with no result so I took 0.25 more with no help. I have not closed my eyes all night and it is now 5:45AM and still wide awake.
Cortisone is known for these side affects when taken orally but I do not recall them from injections but it seems logical. Maybe I forgot because I have not had one in 14 months even tho I certainly needed one or more. Hopefully I will doze off during the day. It was not a trigger point injection. I play in international bridge tournaments on the internet daily so I hope I will be alert. Maury
I have been through a lot of side affects with the steroid shots.I never want another one. Nerves can't sleep crying crazy thinking. I got one because of ct scan contrast stopped in my blatter and now wondering when this get out of my system
I hate steroids. I was give two or three a day in hospital for copd. The anxieties are so very bad and I'm just not myself. Have short temper. Crazy thoughts. Please tell me how long Will this go on
I forgot to mention in my reply to the question I hope they get this. Anyhow Cortisone is very much like Prednisone so researching the prednisone explains they’re both in general the same so the side effects would be the same.
I did go to the ER they did nothing to help me.I was having anxiety and heart palpitations.
13 months in I been way better then I was the first 3 months but it still hits me in waves it’s been adrenaline chest pain even more when I get upset it’s frustrating cause there are weeks I feel like I’m getting better now I’m going on a 3 week wave hoping for now could be the last Anyone have a update on how long it took for them to feel better for good ? My shots were Kenalog 10 20mg
