I just started taking losartan. So far I don't think I have any side affects except made headaches from day one. I have other health problems and I don't want to gain weight. I was just wondering if losartan can cause weight gain?

I went on Lasartan for blood pressure 8 months ago, and have gained 20 lbs, and worse, MUCH WORSE, have been plagued with sinus infections, constant coughing, and frequent colds. Doctor just took me off Losartan today.
My doctor doubled my Losartan 50mg a week and a half ago because my BP was still high. I've gained 9lbs. I'm frantic.
I just started using lorsartan 100.mg.. if it starts me to gain weight I will stop taking them my blood pressure was 198 over 119 that's why I start taking them ... but the blood pressure meds he did have me on blown my head off... is there another pill I can take that will lower it mine stays threw the roof... I've tryed everything
That's a high number. Tell your doctor to put you on benicar HCT 40/25. That will drop your blood pressure. And this may be hard. But don't eat anything but fish. And veggies for a week at least. I guarantee your bp will drop. One last thing and this is for EVERYBODY out there. If your bp ever spikes. Soak your feet in very warm water. That will drop your bp in 20 min.
My doctor prescribed this medicine for me almost 6 months ago. Since then I have had numerous sinus infections, bad headaches, and steady weight gain. I am a vegetarian and I watch what I eat, but I have gained 15 lbs. since starting the med. And no matter what I've done to drop the pounds, including 10 days of juicing to detox, I have continued to gain weight.
Tonight I realized that all of these problems started with this medication, and so I started my online search for answers when I came across this website. Thanks to each of you for sharing your stories about Losartan!
One of the major culprits of high blood pressure is being overweight. To think that this med is contributing to the problem, and others, is extremely alarming. But it is exactly what has been happening in my case.
Like many of you, I am calling my doctor first thing in the mornings to come off Losartan. I am so relieved to know that Losartan is the cause of my rapid weight gain, sinus problems, headaches. Thanks again for your help!!
i have found that i have gained about 30 pounds and have sinus issues from taking the losartan not sure if this is typical but it sure seemed like it happened as soon as i was taken off enalipril
I agree totally with the responses i read on here. I was floating around 240-250 before taking Losartan and in a few years i got up to 289. A difference of 40-50 lbs. I am 6'2" and a naturally big guy but this drug made me bloated, gave me terrible heart burn and acid reflux, and constant sinus problems and chest congestion. Plus i was tired and my heart would skip beats, i felt like i was gonna pass out at times for no reason , dizziness. I am on Metoprolol 25 mgs and i feel 100% normal and calm on this medication. My B.P. was 145/95 on Cozaar and now its around 125/85 on Metoprolol. This crap was posion for me! I told my doctor to please annotate this as a no-no for me in my charts.
I have started Losartan 100mg I asked my doctor why such a high dose? His response was that is what is recommended for a woman 145 lbs 5'6"... I am a spin instructor and work out over 4+ days per week... I have GAINED 20 pounds since August 2015! I have an appointment with my doctor today to replace this medication! Has anyone else experienced this? Please let me know your age and weight?
Frustrated in NJ
Way too high of a dose. I was taking 50 mg, and I am a 39 year old and 240 lb. male. I also gained about 20 pounds on Losartan, not to mention multiple (about 5) sinus infections and constant post-nasal drip for 8 months. It's the worst blood pressure medication I have ever taken. I demanded my doctor to get rid of it.
I have been on Losartan for over eight months now and I have gained 22 Ibs, an frustrated because I was on weight loss programme, I now weigh 220 Ibs, my height 5'5" please advice on which drug to change to
lmwanza, my doctor switched me to Benicar HCT. I'm very happy with it. It doesn't affect my sinuses and it doesn't interfere with weight loss nor cause weight gain.
Hey you in NJ!
So how did it go with the doctors appointment? I am having the exact same issues on Losartan. Did he recommend anything else?
Amy :0 )
i am a 58 year old male who has always weighed in around 145-150 after i started taking losartan about 9 months ago i started gaining weight and i am now at 180 i work out daily for the past two months and have not shed one pound... my dr's response to my weight gain was "eat less" i currently watch calories and eat small meals... I was special forces in the military and know about calorie intake and staying in shape and this is not it!
I also started 3 weeks ago on the same dosage. I weigh more than you, but the same height. My BP has not decreased, but I have been feeling extreme vertigo, dizziness and nausea. I saw the doctor yesterday and they told me to continue. I am also on labetalol, twice a day, and have been on that for years without vertigo and nausea. I am also up 5 pounds. I discontinuing the drug and seeing another doctor. Some doctors will not care about weight gain and meds.
Take control of your health. Find a doctor that will listen to you!
I have been on this for 3 almost 4months and put on a lot of weight! Doesn't this defeat the purpose of blood pressure medicine??? Calling my dr in the morning! I am angry!
I have been taking 50 mg of losartan and i believe the weight gain is evidence of taking this drug. Started taking this as a replacement to lisinopril because of sinus problems but I didn't gain weight. In only 2 weeks of taking losartan I have gained 6 pounds :'(
i started taking it about 8 weeks ago, and I put on 6 pounds. I don't eat sweets or fried foods, and I have even started going to gold's fit, which is supposed to be the toughest class they have, because my traditional workouts were not working. I have been going to the gym for 28 plus years, and also walk and play a lot of gold, my fit bit says I do around 100,000 plus steps a week.
I have been reading the many posts about Losartan, and I am glad to note that I am not the only one who has experienced weight gain, despite the fact that it is not a listed side effect. I have gained about 50 lbs on this med despite having the same or less dietary intake. I am 68 and in otherwise good health, other than slightly elevated BP. I also noted insomnia, nightmares, itching and ankle swelling, joint discomfort in my fingers, and flank pain, with decreased urination. After missing the med for2 days, I feel like my body is "deflating" and my energy level is returning. Time for a new med, or none. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms?
I lead a very active lifestyle and train for triathlons 8 months out of the year. My typical week consists of 8-12 training sessions; running swimming and biking.
Ever since I started taking losartan 7 months ago my weight is up 30lbs... this is with a strict plant based vegan diet and continual strenuous workouts.
I can find no other reason for my weight gain. I'm thankful I found this site and for all of you because I have been frustrated beyond belief not understanding what has caused my weight gain.
If you hAve found successful alternatives tolosartan i would love to know. Thanks
i have been taking losartan 50mg for almost 3 years. i have gained 118lbs. my dr. said that it shouldn't cause weight gain. i think he was just reading the side effects list the drug company posted. i'm seeing him in 10 days and i will get him to change my prescription. any suggestions for a new bp drug that will allow me to drop this weight?
I finally got my doctor to change from Losartan. He prescribed Benicar HCT. It's not cheap, but honestly, I feel it is worth the price. I have zero side effects from it. I am losing weight again and my sinus issues are completely gone.
Benicar is due to come off patent in April 2016, so a generic will be available soon.
If it is too pricey for you, I was also on Lotrel for a number of years with good results. It also caused sinus issues, but nowhere near the level of Losartan.
Hi, any luck with the change of meds? I have been gaining weight on Losartan as well and looking for something else to try.
Please let me know. thank you, Amy :)
had my losartan 50mg and hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg ( brand name - Cozaar ) switched to amlodipine 10mg -benazepril 20mg. ( brand name - Lotrel ) i will let you know how it goes. when i asked my dr about the benicar hct as an alternative to losartin, he said that it shouldn't make any difference because it was "in the same family" as losartin. i don't know what that means really. i seems everyone handles these drugs differently.
Even though Benicar HCT and Losartan are in the same family, I've had a much more positive experience with the Benicar. I don't have any of the issues that I had with Losartan. I was on Lotrel for five years before I supposedly became allergic to it. Not really sure if that was true or not. I think something else was triggering it, but I never found out. I really didn't have any issues with Lotrel.
Hi Redbird!
Any luck with weight loss and your new BP med.
If so what did you go with?
I'm really wanting to change mine.
thanks bunches!! :)
So glad I found this forum! I started Losartan Potassium about 9 months ago. Despite exercising 4-5 times per week and 95% watching my diet, I have been losing and gaining the same 10 pounds. Very frustrating! I always felt that Losartan contributed to my inability to lose weight.
I also believe that Losartan is to blame for my chronic sinus infection. I rarely had any major nasal issues before taking this drug. Since taking it. I've had a constant post-nasal drip. I'm sick of hearing that it is allergies and change in the weather. Nonsense. I never had these problems BEFORE Losartan. I've been an ENT and an allergist, and they just throw Nasonex and Azelastine at me. I'm sick of spraying stuff up my nose. Who wants to live like that forever?
Since I have stopped taking Losartan (and all the nose sprays), my sinuses and post-nasal drip have cleared up considerably. I'm also no longer bloated and tired from the Losartan. Now I'm hoping the weight will start coming off again.
Sick of tired of these drugs!
Hi sonicbill, have you had success in finding a good replacement forLosarten? Like you I have experienced significant weight gain. Thanks
Yes, my doctor prescribed Benicar HCT, which has been great. My sinus issues are gone and I'm losing weight again. I'll never take Losartan again. Benicar HCT is a bit pricey, but it comes off patent in late April 2016, so a generic will be available soon. It works extremely well for me.
Thank you for this post! I have been so frustrated! After losing 70 pounds, I have gained back 30 despite working out 5-6 days a week and eating BETTER than I did when I was losing. My doctor switched me to thus med about 2 years ago... the same time my weight loss stopped.
And sinuses too! I'm calling my doc today!
I have been on losartan for about a year. I have been slowly gaining weight so I have been on a 1200 calorie per day diet with 1-2 miles of walking every day. Every time I see the doc, I have put on another pound or two. Thankyou so much for this information. I am going to quit taking it and see what happens. Sick of the weight gain associated with this med
I also have gained about 20 lbs & feel bloated with pain in my legs. Was wondering if my dose of lasartan/potassium 25 mg was making me gain this weight? Dr put me on 80 mg of lasix to get rid of the fluid only 4 lbs lost with lasix & still taking it! What do I do???

Hi I am also on losartin, the pharmacy just changed manufacturer and now the pill is bigger, I am so bloated and have gained weight, and now my left rib area in my back hurts and I am tired all the time
I gained 30 lbs since starting this medicine almost 2years ago. Started reading this and have just switched meds today!!
Hi Jennifer!
What did you switch to please? Is it keeping the weight off.
Please help, this constant weight gain is hell for me and creates my BP to go up even more. I know everyone is different with meds but just trying to find the right one and rule out others..
thanks so much! :)
I have been on losartan for almost 2 yrs and have gained 13 pounds and still eat them as I did before. This is so frustrating!
My diet is the the same as before and still gaining weight. I'm gonna have my Dr switch. I have never been this heavy.
I switched to diltiazam a year ago. Down 10 pounds, back to my normal weight.
I am so glad for this site. I have been on Losartan for 3 years, but before I started on this medicine I lost 25 pounds. I gained that 25 pounds plus 20 more in 3 years. I couldn't understand why I was gaining so much weight so quickly. I told my doctor that it was the medicine, she didn't think so , but now I know.
Its gotta be the med. I have also gained lots of weight since starting on Losartan! 60 lbs. Did not change my diet!
Yes! Losartan (cozaar) does cause weight gain I have gain more than 150lbs since I started taking it and my Dr. Just figured this out and had switched me to another high blood pressure medicine. Since then I have lost 40lbs of that weight so far and it's only been 3 months. I know it seems impossible but this is absolutely true story.
Yes! I too have gained weight on Losartan. I have been on it for about 2 1/2 months and have noticed an increase of at least 7-10 lbs. I am walking everyday for 30 minutes and am eating MUCH healthier so I don't understand.
I have gained 22Ibs in the 5 months I have been on losarton. I go to the gym 5 times a week and I have always eaten healthy foods. This is so depressing and people have commented on my weight. This is the heaviest I have ever been. Does anyone know of any natural remedies that reduce high blood pressure?
I have been experiencing the same problem, I started taking Losartan about three months ago and I have been very bloated and have put on almost seven pounds. I have had no change in my diet or exercise. I never thought it could be this medication but now I am starting to wonder. This is very frustrating.
I was on 100mg losarton and gained 22 Ibs. I reduced this myself to 50mg and have lost 4 Ibs in one week. It's defo the tablets that cause the weight gain. I have a forthcoming appointment with my consultant and I will ask him to change my meds.
Rob072- what are you taking now instead if losarton??
What blood pressure meds did they change you to?
Did anyone get severe constipation from taking losarton? I'm on bendroflumethiazide too.
I'm looking for the root cause of a serious weight gain (40 lbs.) I've experienced in the last 18 months. I've tried to eliminate other factors, but now have reason to suspect Losartan thanks to everyone's input. For instance, I've been sticking to a 1000 calorie diet, low in carbs and fat and high in lean protein, no snacks, no cheating, keeping meticulous records of everything that goes into my mouth, and after an initial minor loss, my weight started climbing again. Nothing I do seems to have an impact and I'm at the end of my rope with frustration.
2jahn
2jahn... I'm in the same boat. I have spent about £1000 in the last month with personal training to lose weight I am doing everything right but I haven't lost an inch. There is no other explanation for it.
I have been wondering why I have been gaining weight without changing my diet. I have been on Losartan for about 6 months and I have gained about 15 lbs. I am going to the doctor next week. We will see what he says about it.
I am so happy I found this site. I too have gained weight since taking Losartan 100mg. Called my doctor already to switch my meds. Thanks everyone for your comments.
I have tried everything to loose weight and it finally dawned on me it could be the Losartan. I am only taking 25mg a day, but I have never had trouble before and I am exercising all the time also. So I am anxious to see what other drug would not have this same effect.
I just got switched to 100 losartan. Worried about gaining more weight. Been on blood pressure medicine for 30 years. Don't want to gain anymore. Already gained 50. What medicine did you switch to. I would appreciate any information. Thank you
Ive been taking it for about a year.Ive gradually been gaining weight.Been being careful not to change eating habits.I ran out 3 days ago. Went down one pants size in those three days.Im going to the doctors tomorrow.I wouldnt have had any idea but being a weekend the pharmacy couldnt get in touch with the doctor.
Doctor switched me to losartan 25 mg on July 3 because lisinopril gave me a throat tickle/cough which I could not tolerate. My weight is up 10 pounds since July 3 (July 18 today), despite my ongoing weight loss efforts. Thank you for verifying that this drug does indeed cause weight gain. I was beginning to think something was wrong, and now I know what it is.
Absolutely! I was placed on Losartan 50mg in May 2014. I went for a follow up appointment with my Dr today, it was very frustrating to have gained 20lbs within 10 weeks. This is very sad, my weight has been constant for the past 15 years before switching to this medication. The medication was changed to Lisinopril 20mg today.
So glad I found this conversation. I started on Losartan a month ago for borderline high blood pressure and gained 4 lbs on a 5'2" height, normally 129 weight (so I'm not 'skinny') with no changes in diet and exercise (yoga 2 times/week, cycling 700 miles (yes 700) since the start of this 2014 season, walking dog 5x/week). I am quite active. So this sudden weight gain made me crazy - I was feeling so fat around my middle, I thought had ovarian cancer and went to get a ultrasound, which to my relief was normal. It's rather ironic that a blood pressure medication designed to protect your heart can make you fat, one of the risk factors for heart disease! This drug is going in the trash.
I just received my first 30 day supply of Losartan (100 mg). Medicare and AARP supplemental insurance have reduced amount they pay for my BP medication, Valsartan (80 mg). It's a pretty expensive Experience no noticeable side affects while on this pill.
My sister has taken the Losartan for about 5 years and can't loose weight no matter how hard she tries.
I have read many other reviews about this drug, some positive but more were negative.
I also have gained weight taking Losartan, I exercise 3-4 times per week, I eat only 2 meals per day, I don't eat meat, I eat healthily. I have raised my concerns many times with different healthcare professionals, unable to establish why I was gaining weight, It suddenly came to me it must be my medication. I have actually gained in one year 21lbs ! I am gob-smacked, frustrated, and really pissed off.
Glad to see this thread. I was switched to Losartan from Lisinopril because of the cough. My blood pressure stays nice and low on them, but I get puffier and puffier all the time. Weight is up 25 lb in a year, not normal for me at all. Was thinking it was just me getting old. I will definitely see my doc about lowering or switching meds. thanks people!
I am so happy I found this threat, I have GAINED 12 pounds since taking Cozzar WTF, I knew it had to be it, my eating habits have not changed and I am very puffy, I am going to research natural ways to keep my blood pressure down, this is ridiculous, I see the dr. on the 29th and we are going to have to address this ASAP< how is this good for my diabetes to gain weight, I am already overweight.
Why are drs not telling people about the weight gain, that cannot be good for hypertension/???
In eight months l have gained 140LBS since being prescribed Losartan... now on Ramipril
Glad I found this thread too... Had lost 25 pounds before starting losartan... Since lisinopril gave my that awful cough, too... Luckily going to doc tomorrow.. Gonna make him change it... Again
Hi
Exactly what medicine did your doctor prescribe? Because I started taking Losartan on or around the 16th of December 2016 and I was weighing 19 stone which was already a lot. Since taking this medication I have shot upto 21 stone in less than a month. I couldn't understand what was going on. But now I no! So I. Done with it :( it makes me really sad.
Hi Rob!
I would like to please know what the doctor has switched you too and if it has worked out for you in the past years. I have been on Losartan for a year now and have gained 40 lbs. Its so upsetting. I cannot tell you how much I would appreciate your reply.
Take care, Amy :)
Hi Rob!
Wow that sounds wonderful!
what med did they witch you too?
Is it still working with the weight loss?
I want to get off losartan too.
Please help
Amy
There is a natural drink, 1 cucumber, pineapple, grapefruit, 2 inchs ground ginger blend well drink every day twice
wow thats crazy i gained so much weight how long have you been on losartan
Have been on for 2 months and have gained 10 plus pounds, despite watching diet closely and working out frequently, gym plus regular bike riding.
I have been on losartan Hctz for a week. It has decreased my appetite and so far have lost 3 lbs.
I have No side effects.
I started taking Losartan 8 months ago and have gained 60 lbs! I have not changed my eating habits or exercise. After reading the previous comments, I'm trying to figure out another med o can replace it with. If anyone has suggestions, it would be appreciated.
Did u diet to lose it???
Which meds did you change too
Weight gain is not listed as a possible side effect of Losartan.
what new bp med did your Dr. switch you to ?
Well, each person has their own side effect... I am a spin instructor, I work out 4+ days per week and my diet is a low carb, high protein diet... however since December I have gained 17 pounds... unfortunately, the side effects do not list the rapid weight gain, but if you go to Webmd... it lists it as a possible side effect... this is not every case, perhaps just mine!!! Today, I requested from my doctor, that I change, and the new med is Benicar HCT, it will not let me retain water, so it comes with a frequent bathroom breaks, but we shall see if my weight loss is back to where it should be??? I 'll keep you posted... (objects may not always be what they really are??? ) each of us are different and we have to find the right find that fits for us... good luck!!!
Hi Renpacelli,
How has the Benicar HCT been treating you? Any luck with weight loss that losartan brought on? I'm really thinking of switching.
Thanks :)
I changed doctors and the new one said I do not have high bp. Goodbye losartin.
