I have been using Gabapentin and Lamictal for about six years to manage my Bi-Polar type 1 disorder and it works better than any meds or combination of meds I have used in 20 years. It is the longest period of time I have been stable and not had to be hospitalized. Is anyone else using these meds to treat Bi-Polar Disorder?

Our young adult child just added gabapentin to the lamictal and sertraline she wasn't taking regularly anyway. She just was hospitalized by choice, and had a really positive experience. It looks like there is great follow-up care and she now feels hopeful. I am a believer in trying whatever meds necessary, because when they work, like sertraline for my anxiety depression, it can really stave off those awful symptoms.
Yes I take both plus trazodone to sleep.
I have been on Lamictal and Gabapentin for a long time now. Together with bupropion (antidepressant) it is probably the best I have ever felt. Lamictal replaced Lithium and I was given the Gabapentin for chronic pain. I found Venlefaxine a good antidepressant but had to come off for medical reasons. Bupropion, mainly used in America, is excellent. No side effects and no weight gain.
I was first diagnosed with Major Depression Disorder and Anxiety Disorder in 1995 while in the military. I was medically discharged in 2001 for these two. The VA diagnosed me with Bi-Polar II. I was not happy about the diagnoses because of the stigma that comes with "Bi-Polar"! (I wish people would educate themselves on mental health!!) They have had me on a bunch of different med combos which is very frustrating! I have been taking (off and on) Zoloft 50 mg for depression since my first diagnoses in '95. A few months ago, my doctor added Gabapentin, once a day, for hot flashes. The Gabapentin works very well for the flashes! Then this week, my psychiatrist added Lamictal because mind was either having rolling thoughts, fogginess and/or blankness most of all the time. I'm starting to feel pretty good after 5 days on the 3 pill combo! My mind seems to be functioning better! I am glad to see others on the combo as well! :)
I am also on gabapentin and lamictal and they have worked very well for me. I have been using lamictal for 15 years and gabapentin for 9 (I think). I take additional gabapentin for diabetic neuropathy so my dosage is quite high for that medication.
hey guys, i just started the gabpenton tonight. i also take lamictal. i was on 150 for a long while but started randomly having panic attacks and anxiet again so they upped me last week to 300. i hope tje ganpentin (sp?) gets me back to my nornal self. im an happy to hear all tje good reviews on this page. thanks everyone!
I have bipolar and have been on Lamictal for almost 2 years now. Today, my primary dr. Put me on gabapentin for nerve pain. I am interested to see what my psychiatrist will say when I see him next. Was a little nervous about trying a new med because in the past my doctors have not spoken to each other and put me on meds that didn't go well together. I am glad I found someone else on this combo... even if for different reasons.
I have Bipolar 2 and have been on Lamictal/Lamotrigine for 10 years now, and 6 weeks ago was put on Gabapentin for spinal stenosis. I was also concerned about combining the two.
I've taken LAMICTAL for about 6 yrs. It took place of my Lithium. It was the best med that ever worked for 23 yrs. Lithium had really bad side effects. I don't know about the other one. I take 400 mgs. 200 at bed and 200 in the morning. I also take imipramine, klonpin and adderall. This is the most stable I have been in many years. I'm glad it works for you ! Hope all stays well. Stacey
Lithium was hard on me as well. I hope that the Lamictal does not stop working, as have some of my past medications. I have had the most success using Lamictal than any other meds I have tried over the last twenty years.
Hey Dan, Late for this answer, but if they are working why rock the boat.
I would never stop taking these meds! I have just never run accross another B.P. person who takes these meds to treat it. I am just curious to see if anyone else is taking what I am taking or if I am out of the norm.

Jaime, I would be glad to share any knowledge or experiences I have had as a person with the disease of Bipolar Disorder. I feel that I have enough of a history with this disease that I can give some good advice to make it easier to live with. Thanks again! Dan
