I was just prescribed 30 mg of Vyvanse for binge eating disorder, hoping this will work. I haven't taken it yet, as my pharmacy needs a day to fill the script since they were out of it... but was just wondering if anyone had any advice, comments, experiences, etc.
Thanks
Has anyone used Vyvanse for Binge Eating Disorder?

Do you have to take this or other BED meds forever or will I ever be normal without it?
I have been taking Vyvanse for 3 weeks now and it's still not working. I'm fine all day but I still wake up with a strong urge to eat between 11pm-2am. My Dr. upped my dose from 20mg to 30mg at 9am but I feel like it wears off before bedtime. My pharmacist suggested taking 30mg this morning and 20mg with dinner. Has anyone here had a similar experience with the wearing off effects? I've read that the standard dose for BED is 50-70mg. My biggest concern is the potential side effects. So far I haven't had any trouble sleeping (aside from the waking up to eat which is what I'm taking the med for). I have a very healthy heart (been a distance runner for 16 years). Please share your thoughts and experiences with me. I woke up really depressed yesterday. I'm in 2 different kinds of therapy and seeing a psychiatrist. I'm not trying to use this as a "cure all". I just need help.
I started with 20 mg in April of 2016 and I am currently taking 60mg. I do not have any issues with it wearing off. I used to on the lower doses. Hopefully you can get it adjusted to fit your needs! Good luck!
A dose usually only lasted about 8 hours for me. I'm not surprised you are experiencing rebound hunger once it wears off after you've fallen asleep. A second dose in the late afternoon or early evening would likely help keep that in check. But a second dose might make it more difficult to fall asleep. But the crash you're experiencing is something I'm familiar with. The depression may also be part of the crash as well but I can't say for sure. I'm not a psychiatrist. A second dose might worth a shot if the crash is overwhelming you. Good luck
Thanks for the feedback! I sincerely appreciate it. I'm not "binging" at night anymore but I did wake up twice last night and had a protein shake both times. I am still trying to get the timing and dosage down. I have a 60mg Rx and some left over 30mg pills. Last night was on the 60 mg. Today I'm trying divided doses with the 30mg. Best of luck to all along this journey.
I just started taking 50mg of Vyvanse today for BED. I worry about the side effects because I started to feel jittery around noon (I took it around 7 am) I wasn't hungry which is a nice change because I work in an office and sit at my desk and usually snack all day. I have had terrible dry mouth and drinking constant water all day hasn't quenched my thirst. Does the jitters and dry mouth seem to improve with time???
Hi Daniche, Vyvanse 30mg, was an answer to prayer for me after a lifetime of struggling with B.E.D. Right away I felt calmer, had more energy, was more focused, motivated, and most of all found that food was no longer an issue!!! My weight began to drop and life was the best it had ever been. After 8 months, I found my BP starting to rise higher and higher. Suddenly it was in the stroke zone. Although I was on many more meds at that time, my doctor said I needed to come off Vyvanse immediately. That was 2 weeks ago. Today I'm like cinderella who had to leave the ball. The depression is back, the constant need for food is back, no more energy or motivation, and strangely my BP remains high! I don't know if Vyvanse caused this or not. I see a new doctor tomorrow. I'm now on Topamax but it is nothing like Vyvanse was for me. Once we get my BP back down, I hope we can try me back on Vyvanse to see if I can tolerate it without BP problems. Truly, for me, it is an answer to prayer. Best of luck!
I've gone through and read lots of these posts. Thank you to all who have shared. It makes me feel like I am not alone in this. I am 33 and was just prescribed Vyvanse (for BED) this past week. I am on day 4 of 30mg. I binged last night before going to bed and then again this morning. Before that I haven't binged and have definitely noticed a decreased urge to binge overall. However, I am wondering if upping the dose would help. I see the psychiatric nurse practitioner again in another week to see how I'm doing. I am wondering how to go about asking her to up the dosage without coming off like a pill head. Lol Any and all feedback, advice, or tips would be very much appreciated. I know it's been a while since people have posted on here but I am hoping it reaches some of you. Thanks in advance and happy new year.
I believe the therapeutic dose is 50-70 mgs, so it would be perfectly logical for you to ask for a higher dose. However, because it is closely monitored not sure if you could get another 30 day prescription before your first one is up. Most prescribers will titrate up 10 mgs at a time. My experience has been, if I am engaged in something I will not binge. If I am not, then I can fall back into old habits.
I have lost 24 lbs using Vyvanse and Weight Watchers. It just works for me. I've always exercised so not an issue. I started at 40 and I am currently taking 60 mgs.
Good Luck.
Thank you! How long have you been on it?
Starting today for add and bed as of this year. Nervous, high anxiety last 2-3 years, causing depression and bed. Prescribed 20mg but mixed half capsle contents in juice so could be at only 10 (ok per prescrber website, to mix with juice or yogurt for kids etc). Just dont wanna feel crazy fuzzy head. All the anti anxiety, depression meds cause such weight gain, hope Vyvanse helps combat. Really appreciate this blog and comments.. feel not alone. Sometimes it really hard. Thank you
Hello! Just started taking vyvanse today for BED. Have struggled with ED since I was abut 12, (am 33 now) and over the last 5 years have gained about 50-60 lbs. I have been working out and trying to watch what I eat... but the binging always make me go up instead of down. I will lose a lb or 2, then gain 3. I am reading all these things saying vyvanse is not for weight loss ect. But I think if I didn't binge I would be losing weight right?? I think I should be! Has anyone been on this drug for more then 6 months? Have you lost weight with exercise? My Dr. Said.some ppl have been in it for a year and that is fine as long as it's still working for me... but he told me to not expect weight loss.
He says that because it is not medically labeled as a weight loss drug, its FDA approved for BED but what is the side effect of not binging? Obviously if you're not having as many calories going in you'll lose weight. :) I was on before I got pregnant and lost about 10lbs. Now I have restarted it and have been one for about a month and again have lost ten. I do my part by working out everyday and the medication helps me make better decisions when I do eat. You'll def experience loss of appetite about an hour after taking it, make sure you do eat so that by the end of the day when the medication wears off you're not hANGRY lol. hope it helps you!
I started taking Vyvanse Sept 10. The first month I dropped 16.4 pounds- much faster than my doctor was wanting. She had me google basal metabolic Tate and subtract 300 from that (MyFitnessPal is about 60 calories more, so I use that to help me eat enough). Vyvanse keeps me worrying about food. Or money for food. Or if there'll be enough food. Or if I have leftovers I don't sit there and obsess over them until I eat them because they are there... I don't oack my linch at 5am worrying about if I'll have anything for dinner. Or should I just go out to ensure food at home for dinner. Or if I work late I don't worry about how hungry I am, maybe I should just drive thru. Do I have money to spare? I just can't wait the 6 minute drive home to eat what's there. Then I'll have to heat it up. Or take the time to put it on a plate... LOL Gosh, I hope I'm not the only one who gets the shakes over my next meal while eating this meal.
Vyvanse has stopped all of that for me. I never 'forget to eat'. But that first 2 weeks I just wasn't that hungry so didn't choose to eat. I eat when I am hungry. Overeating is possible, but not typical any more. It's easy to portion out things and make 2-3 meals out of what would have been a partial meal before. It's a tool. Use it wisely. Weight loss is the side effect of not binging or overeating. Personally, I am enjoying the freedom from the (food) drug that's run my life more and more for the past 40 yrs.
Hi there, curious to know how you're doing now. And what dosage you are currently at if you are still taking Vyvanse thanks in advance
Hello - I just started vyvanse (today), along with Trazodone for BED, depression and anxiety. Anyone know how long a patient is typically on Vyvanse treatment? I know there are strict regulations since this is a controlled substnace
Day one I noticed more energy - but I am not sure how soon these meds kick in, also, I am working on a project that requires a lot of movement and physical labor (much different from my desk job). Thanks for those who comment or share... this is all completely NEW to me.
I am now at 60mg Vyvanse daily. I have been taking it for binge eating disorder and I truly feel the effects. I am on here to learn of some of the side effects. I have been taking the medication since April and progressed from 30mg to 60mg increasing by 10mg each month. I believe the doctor will leave me at this level. I definetly feel the difference from when I forget to take the medication (ie: forgot over a weekend) and I could feel the cravings coming on whenever I would see a McDonald's commercial or Dairy Queen. Between the medication and training myself to eat at regular intervals and eat properly, this has had a big effect on me. Currently I am down 30lbs since March but more so I have started to feel in control again.
Hi there, curious to know how you're doing on the Vyvanse. Are you still taking it? If so, is it still working? Thanks in advance.
Yes I currently take 50mg... I have lost 50 po7nds since april 20th 2016... It gives me tons of energy and curves my appetite... I started at 30 but had to have the dose increased.
Just wondering... is the weight loss from you not binging? Or are you following a diet/exercise program? I really struggle with my weight and can't seem to lose a pound no matter how hard I try or hoe much I workout. Today is day 1 for me though on vyvanse and I'm really hoping it helps!
I cut out soda for the most part... I drink water all day long... had to trick myself to do that... I put my water in a foam cup from the gas station so my mind would think it was soda... I also switched to sea salt... I have never really eaten sweets so that wasn't a problem to cut that out... I don't really exercise or follow any "diet" since I have started the Vyvanse I am just not hungry... some days i felt like I was absolutely starving so I had my doctor up the dose... I have tons and tons of energy so now I feel like taking the dogs on more walks and actually doing things with my kids and so on... it really is great! I started at 305 April 20th 2016 went in for a weight check yesterday Oct 11 2016 and was down 54 pounds. I highly recommend it to everyone! I started at a 49 BMI and am down to a 42 BMI
I did try other things before the Vyvanse that just didn't work at all!! So this was just not the "easy" way out as some people say.
Good luck!!!
That's amazing! Good for you. I hope I have the same experience. It just confuses me how the Dr and drug manufacturer stress that this is "not for weight loss". I guess they just don't want to be considered a diet pill??? I have tried so many diets and nothing works for me, but that is because I do really well for a day or two then go on a 3 day binge. The more I gain, the most depressed I get, cycle repeats. It's awful really! I just want the binges to end! Reading stories such as yours gives me hope tho! Keep up the good work
Thank you! Hopefully it works for you! I feel amazing! Especially being able to breath when I bend over to tie my shoes!!
I lost 40lbs in 5 months just because of the drug. It reduces your appetite and ramps up your metabolism. I didn't exercise or diet, nothing. I just ate less and felt more animated. But the effects ware off and you need to keep increasing the dosage. I'm currently at 40mg and am about to have it increased to the next level (50mg or 60mg). I think once I get to the weight I want to be at, I think I will be able to maintain it even if the drug is less effective. But it really has a lot a beneficial effects on your body. A saw a web site that detailed the different effects it had and it was quite amazing all of the things in your body that it affects. Most of them were good. Let us know where you are after 30 days.

Just an update... I am up to 60 mg of Vyvanse... I started at 305 in April 2016 and I am now at 239... I eat a ton less.. .I do crave chocolates and peanut butter ALL the time! But I still love all the energy I get from the med. Good luck to everyone
I was initially prescribed 30 mg and my world of binging as I knew it within 1-2 weeks ceased. I finally knew what it was like to feel normal. What a gift! I lost over 25 lbs. without trying just by living life instead of obsessing about food, weight, calories and all the guilt and shame that binge eating brings. After about 5 months 30 mg wore off and the binging started again and I put on about 8-9 lbs and then my doctor put it up now to 70 mg. I'm better but not like it was during that first round. I get restless so try to cut bk on caffeine. Definitely give it a shot. It's worth it! Good luck
I'm on vyvanse 70 mg for binge eating along with Fitzuma for depression and lamotrigine for mood stabilizer for my bi-polar. The only thing I feel with vyvanse is it helps me to stay alert at work because I don't sleep well at night and makes me talk and talk. That's it. It doesn't seem to help my binge eating. I've put on so much weight, I have about decided to just go off all of it. Maybe the manic highs will give me some energy to get this weight off. Gaining so much weight has depressed me a favor so much. Nothing's working. Just ready to give up trying.
Just wondering if you are still taking vyvanse? Have you gained or lost any weight? Has it started helping with the binging yet? I'm just starting my RX today.
I am on it now. I'm taking 30 milligrams. Yes it does work like a diet pill but when it gets close to the evening time it's starting to wear off and that's when u have to use self control. I exercise a lot to keep weight down but i don't like being out of control and I worry about not being able to exercise and still binge eating
I work out every day too. I gained 30 pounds this past pregnancy (my third) and it is been tough to get it off even with taking my Vyvanse daily. I find its helpful throughout the day but the hardest time is it night after it wears off and when my hunger comes back with a vengeance. I'm on 50mg now. Maybe I need to up it.
Yea Im thinking about either going to a higher dose or taking it every other day. It had really stopped working end of my third month taking it. I'm into fourth month didn't take it for 2 days. Took one at 10 this morning and so far it is doing what it should do during the day again not sure what tonight will bring. It did help me this morning gave me some willpower. I been getting sonic Oreo blasts not every night but too many night and decided to go to grocery store and get Weight Watchers fudge bars. I like to exercise I know that sounds weird but it helps with my depression gets those endorphins going but I am always afraid of the day I won't be able to exercise. I eat like a horse especially at night. I take triazadone for sleeping and I'm going to start taking it at 9 it will put me to sleep in about 30 minutes. This medicine helped me quit eating in the middle of the night because I slept until time to get up
Yes and it worked for me for 4 months felt like a "normal eater". It wore off so my psychiatrist just raised my dose from 30-70 mg. it's been over a week and I feel it starting to kick in again. I lost 20 lbs without trying just stopped binging. Now need to start exercising again and get stabilized. Have some insomnia and a bit hyper but worth it!
Hi. Yes I was initially prescribed 30 mg and most recently went up to 70 mg. I felt as if I entered a new world... the world of what "normal" people must feel like with food. My obsession with food lifted, my triggers, my night-time eating, my stops at fast food places, my shame, my compulsory need to have sweets and/or carbohydrates or sweets to get through my feelings all lifted. This lasted for about 4 months, just enough to lose about 20 pounds without counting calories, dieting or obsessing about food. I ate differently and ate what I wanted and when I wanted. The only downfall was it made me hyper but I'd take hyper any day than the hell of binge eating. Then these feelings subsided and slowly the binging crept up again to a point where I gained 10 lbs. in a month. My psychiatrist just raised the dose a week ago and I'm praying it helps
I am a normal-weight person who has struggled with binge-eating for about ten or fifteen years. About a year ago I started taking Vyvanse 40 milligrams. I had heard and read about building up a tolerance so I decided to only take it on days that I knew that were difficult for me as far as the binge eating. So during the past year I would take one probably 3 or 4 days a week and I would take days off where I did not take it at all. I never ever built up a tolerance to it and it always worked on the days that I took it. I have since stopped taking Vyvanse, and I only binge occasionally whereas before I was bingeing probably 5 days a week for sure. I did like taking it and it definitely took away the feeling of obsessing over food and the bingeing was definitely kept at bay the whole time. I would almost suggest going off of it for a few weeks, which I know would be tough, but going back on and then maybe not taking it every day... Maybe every other.
If I was to get back on again, that's the way that I would do it. Again, after a year I never build up any kind of tolerance and 40 milligrams always worked.
You are right about getting off it for a few days then starting back it does start working again like when I first started taking it. I am like u Im not over weight because I exetcise hard 5 days a week and 2 days I do body pump classes. That's why nobody believes I'm a binge eater! I hate being out of control have always binged as a kid getting worse.
I've been on Vyvance for 8 months now. Started on 30mg and after about 3 months bumped up to 50mg. But for the past 3 months it seems like the great beneficial effects of reduced appetite and control over the urge to eat have gone away. The first 3 months I ate because I had to. And even though I still enjoyed eating, I only did it because it was necessary to survive. I lost 40 lbs during those first 3 months. But just as important was the freedom I had from the compulsion to eat. I felt free, liberated and finally in control. Now the old feelings are back and I'm fighting and losing the eating battle. I had few symptoms from the drug. Mostly, just a nervous sensation like butterflies, and really didn't need much sleep. Always had plenty of energy and was a little more "animated" than normal. But nothing bad.
Although I really didn't want to be on this drug for the rest of my life, it would definitely be the better option if it worked long term compared to the constant over eating. Has anybody tried going off it for a while to "reset" your bodies tolerance, so when you start taking it again it's effective like it used to be? Thanks and never give up. Its better to fight and lose sometimes but also win sometimes than to just give up. And if you have someone who can help you, like a spouse, get then involved because it definitely helps. FYI I'm paying $250 out of pocket after insurance paying $35.

I stopped taking the Vyvance about 2-3 weeks ago because it costs so much, wasn't doing anything for me any more and I just wanted to re-set myself. Unfortunately, I and back to the old and powerful feeling of having to eat. Especially at night. I haven't been on a scale in a few weeks. I know I've gained some weight back. But not sure how much. I go back to my doctor in 8 days. We'll see what he suggests. Although, I'm not sure he'll have any new answers since I'm his first, and as of my last visit 3 months ago, his only BED on Vyvance. I'll report back after the visit.
