I am currently on 150mg of Effexor. Overall I am very happy with my progress but the only problem I have is that I have terrible nightsweats. The sweats are so bad that I have to change my pj's twice a night and put a towel down on my soaking bed. My whole body from my head to my toes sweats, I am literally dripping with sweat! My consultant says he has never heard of anyone else having such severe sweats. I would really like to know if anyone else has such bad night sweats?
Does anyone else suffer from extreme nightsweats while taking Effexor?

I've been on venalflaxine/effexor for almost a year and a half. I am a 33 year old female. My dose is 225. For the first two months the medication made me feel awful... stomach/bowel issues you name it (I was on a lower dose when I started). It also made me burp a lot and I am not a burper! Very embarassing side effects. I take it at night before I go to bed, I notice that if I wake up at night I'm pretty dizzy, that's why I don't take it during the day. I've tried a few different types/brands/doses over the years but this seems to have leveled me out. Those who feel dull etc. I am sorry that it has had that effect on you. And understand how difficult it is to adjust to meds. I hope you find what works for you.
As for the night sweats they started about 6 or so months ago. Wake up completely drenched and gross. This is the first time I googled if it could be related to the meds. I hate having to wake up and change pjs in the middle of the night. I also have found that i have gained a lot of weight, which I think is a combination of meds and dealing with chronic pain.
Thanks to everyone who has shared their experiences.
Also wanted to add that when missing a dose I go through extreme withdrawal... nausea, chills, dizziness and awful headache. At first thought I caught the flu but realized it was the meds. Missing a dose is really hard on my system.

So glad I stumbled onto this thread! I have an answer to my dry mouth and severe sweating.
I am on 325mg Effexor. (Half, twice a day)My doctor prescribed it when the Prozac stopped working. I've been on Effexor for 10 years. I started getting horrible dry mouth a few months after starting the drug. I also sweat profusely with the slightest exertion. I don't have the sweating problem at night.
The dry mouth is the WORST though, painful sometimes.
Effexor works so well for me though, I am willing to work with the side effects.
My doctor told me Effexor doesn't last long in the body, even missing one dose can trigger withdrawal. Sometimes I would miss my bedtime dose and wake up in a panic. I make sure to take that night dose now.
I'm on Effexor 225mg, I'm 22 and I have horrible night sweats just like this. Sometimes extremely vivid nightmares and dreams too.
I'm 29 and have been on Effexor for almost a year now starting at 37.5mg and gradually going up to 150mg. I now seem to be feeling much better on the 150mg but since upping the dosage, I've also started having side effects. I just started taking the 150mg about three/four months ago and over the past month I've been getting horrible night sweats about once a night. When it was in the 80's outside, I was sweating so badly I didn't want to go outside. I would be drenched in sweat just walking to the mailbox. I feel like I can't handle heat or doing anything that would result in sweating because I sweat so heavily and easily now. These night sweats have affected my sleep and not only am I drenched in sweat but I'm also cold from it because my body isn't really hot it is just sweaty from the side effect of the Effexor! I'm so glad I stumbled across these comments because I don't feel like something is wrong with me now.
I've also been having very vivid dreams and some nightmares but not anything too crazy. I did have dry mouth for about a month but thankfully that has gone away and I am hoping these night sweats go away as well. If the sweats don't go away I will definitely be asking my doctor to put me on another medication. This is the second anxiety medication I have been on that has given me severe side effects. I wish there was something out there with no side effects!!!
I know that this is an old thread but it looks like people have been adding to it over the years. I am the worst at remembering to take my meds and have missed a few doses of my Effexor XL 150 over the few months I’ve been taking it. I was previously on Lexapro 20 once day and if I missed a dose it was no big deal. Effexor is a completely different story. If I miss one dose I get horrible night sweats. It’s unbearable. Once I missed two doses and I had night sweats, nightmares and headaches. Obviously I’m not “blaming” the medication as I know how dumb I am to miss doses but I’ve never been on a medication where the effects where so immediate. I think it’s a great drug but my my doctor did warn me is power stuff and coming off can be tough.
I’m off to nap since I had to shower at 4 am after waking up in sweat :-/
For me, I was able to pinpoint the night sweats as happening when the Effexor is running LOW in my body -- e.g., if I forgot to take it one day, I would have terrible night sweats; or if I took it in the morning earlier than usual, then the following night, I would have milder night sweats when it started to wear off. I switched to taking it right before bed, and that has almost completely eliminated the night sweats for me (except when my schedule is off because of travelling across time zones).
I've been on 450mg of Effexor xr for ten years and I suffer almost nightly from terrible night sweats, this post has helped so much as I didn't know if it was the drug or something else wrong with me. I sweat during the day on my face and head even in winter ! But like so many others have said the drug works so I don't want to change it. I guess I'll just have to keep changing clothes overnight. Does anyone else have extremely vivid dreams just before waking drenched in sweat ? I experience this every night too.
I am taking 225mg effexor and am also waking up during the night fully covered in sweat... very ANNOYING!!! What do we do to fix this?
34 years old. . .
I recently went from 37.5 to 75 mg per day. Ever since, I soak my sheets every night. Even my dog is over it. I just ordered some moisture wicking sheets. I'll let you know if they work. Not sure what else to do...
I have them that bad. I freeze my husband out I have the air on and up to three fans blowing in the room. He's hunkered under blankets I mad because I'm still hot..lol
Wish you Luck!!
I have been taking effexor 150 for over 12 years and had the sweating the week before my period. Through a fluke, I started taking Salt Stick Caps because I run in extreme heat and these were recommended. For two months now, I have not sweated at all before my period and unless I am running, I only take one a day at night time. The Salt Stick Caps are electrolyte balancers with calcium, magnesium, chloride, sodium and potassium and antidepressants in general through electrolytes out of balance and can lower any magnesium intake. I want to make no promises because it has only been two months but my ability to tolerate heat, dehydration and other side effects from effexor are much better. I also looked at some reviews and saw positive reviews. I hope they keep working.
Yeah just so you know I stopped taking it and the night sweats stopped within a day or so...
I am glad that you were able to stop taking them. I can't do that so I am just thrilled that the Salt Sticks caps are working. Good luck to you.
I had terrible night sweats on celexa, the same class of drugs. They stopped immediately after cessation of drug.
I am on Effexor and my night sweats are so bad I have to change my clothes and sheets. It is awful.
I never attributed it to Effexor... but come to think of it... I did NOT have these EXTREMELY SEVERE night sweats until a few months after I started on Effexor.
Its miserable. I wake up a few times during sleep dripping, soak & wet clothes, body and bedding. Not just alittle sweaty... TOTALLY dripping, I can actually use towel and it ends up wringing wet.
Is there anything that may control this... I LOVE my Effexor..it changed my life, so I don't really wanna give it up. Anything that will help?? I've tried cooling sheet, no clothes, deodorant applied to EVERYWHERE... nothing works so far. Worried I may have to make a decision between my absolute life saving Effexor and sleep.
and btw, I've tried multiple meds for depression. Effexor is the ONLY one that has ever worked.
I also suffer from night sweats on this medicine that started later into taking it! I feel your pain! I am actually making my way off of it.
I sweat a lot with effexor, especially at night. I wanted to avoid more meds.
I take supplements to help: red clover, flaxseed oil and evening primrose. All found at Walgreens or Wegmans...
Not 100% better, but it helps!
I've been taking Effexor for 9 years and have regular night sweats as intense as you are describing - my body and bed are soaked like I've laid in bed after jumping in the pool and I feel completely dehydrated and weak in the morning because of it. It's gotten increasingly worse over the years and is now so unbearable that I'm going to see my doctor to change my medication asap (hence me also researching the topic of Effexor and night sweats)! Good luck hope you find an alternative that works. Avoid being on it long term if you can too because the withdrawal side effects are horrendous and are the only reason I've continued to take this medication. Brain zaps and the like.
Hey I'm on these but I only get the occasional nightsweats
I am currently on 300mg of effexor prolonged release capsules. I started getting night sweats I think after the 3rd day of being on 75mg. I mentioned this to my psych and he suggested I also start taking Mitrazapine, a different antidepressant that apparently can counter act the side effects of Effexor.
Unfortunately it gave me a very dry mouth the whole day, made me irritable, and then after a few weeks of taking it I developed Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. You can google that but basically I woke up gasping for air because during my sleep my airway had closed. This would happen about five or six times the night until I decided just to stay awake. It was particularly terrifying because in my happy dream I was feeling suddenly that I was becoming really weak and all life was fading...
Stopped taking it right away and was able to sleep ok the following night. Still open to any suggestions. The effexor is working well so it'd be annoying to have to change it.
Yes this happened to me when I was upped to a higher dose of effexor. Every night I would have to put a towel over my sheets. It interrupted my sleep. You should try another anti depressant. This won't go away. Good luck.
