I had Mirena in for a little bit over 3 weeks and had it removed. I started noticing heart palpitations (skipped beats, racing heart, fluttering) and chest pain. I also started getting short of breath over nothing. Just a few steps and i was breathing hard and felt so tired. Since having it removed (2 days ago) i havent had palpitations, the chest pain doesnt feel to bad anymore, but i still feel very tired and sleepy all the time along witht he short of breath. Was wondering if anyone else felt like this with Mirena. Also, I have been bleeding for 11 days now, and since I had it removed its been heavier... normal?
I already went to my regular doctor and they did blood work, im wearing a hedart monitor for a few days, and I also had an ultrasound of my heart done. Need to wait for the results but in the mean time Im worrying about these symptoms.
Other symptoms i had while on Mirena: irritability, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, brain fog.

Ladies, it is very important that you report these side effects to your health care professional so they further report it to the manufacturer of Mirena. I am not sure of the reporting process in the US / with the FDA. However, I live in the UK and I have raised an MHRA ‘yellow card’ on the MHRA website recently for palpitations, fatigue and loss of concentration linked to Mirena. The more reports they get, they are more likely to further research the side effects and hopefully update the Patient Information Leaflet.

I had the Mirena fitted 3 weeks ago today, as they were fitting it I came on my menstrual cycle, to be honest other than a few cramps that day I can honestly say it was all going well. This was Tuesday by Friday I’m at my doctors surgery being prescribed antibiotics for an infection. She said that once I’d finished the course I’d be OK. By Monday I had chronic back pain, pain in my ribs my lower abdomen and started coughing and wheezing. I’ve been taking pain killers everyday for two weeks and using my asthma inhaler on a regular basis. I’ve only ever needed to use it now and again previously. Tonight I’m struggling to breathe, I can’t explain how tender my stomach feels as well as bloated and now my breasts are tender. After reading everyone’s comments I’ve emailed my gynae nurse and practically begged for her to call me.
I’ve not been myself for the past 3 weeks, I’ve lost my libido completely. I have night sweats and my glands are up in my throat. The only reason it was done was to reduce blood flow and pain. I’m praying they remove it as I can’t go on like this...

I reduced the pain & lightened my periods by using vitex. It naturally balances your hormones. Took a couple of months to start making a difference, & I've stayed on it long term. You can't use it if you're using hormonal birth control, but I ditched that after years of side effects. I rely on the natural method of charting fertility, in recent years. Just something to consider if you want support for periods in future.

I just started researching this very thing! I had a Mirena IUD put in almost 6 months ago and since then I have had heart palpitations so badly that I have gone to emergency twice. I am currently waiting for an Echo as well as a holter monitor to check things out. The IUD is the only thing that has changed in the past 6 months. I am so glad I saw your post! I am going to have the IUD removed and see if this changes things. Thank you!

I had the Mirena inserted last year in October. The bleeding was hectic in the beginning until my body adjusted but now I have been experiencing the heart palpitations and shortness of breath. I am wondering if I should make an appointment to get the device removed and seek another method, as I do not want another pregnancy.

I am so grateful that I found this site. My doctor inserted the Mirena two weeks ago to regulate heavy bleeding. Since then I have had constant heart palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, chest pains, headaches, and just overall not feeling well. I can't do normal activities without feeling bad from all these symptoms. Prior to the Mirena, I've lived a very active healthy life. I went to the ER and Cardiologist because I've been thinking that I'm having a serious heart problem or heart attack. Each time they say that I'm having irregular heartbeats but say that it's harmless. I just had the halter monitor removed and Echo done yesterday. I am waiting to hear back from my Cardiologist regarding the results. I have a feeling that the results will not be crucial and that my complications have everything to do with the Mirena. I am calling my doctor tomorrow to have the Mirena removed!

I have mirena also and have palpitations. I did research after blood tests and ekg come back normal that I am low in magnesium which can cause palpitations. I took magnisum citrate and palpitations stopped. I think mirena decreases the magnesium in your body which cause palpitations. Try a magnisum supplement. Go for any other one than magnisum oxide as only 4 percent is absorbed. Look up how much to take when u have a deficiency. I spread it out throughout the day. It says u can take up your 1200mg a day with deficiency. But do your own research. It works for me.

I am so glad I found this site and have confirmed am not crazy. I've had the Mirena in for 8 days and getting it removed tomorrow. Within 2 days, I became sad, had night sweats 4 days in a row and have had such a bad back ache that only walking really relieves it. But the worst had been the shortness of breath and great fatigue after simple walking and lightened. Each day it is getting worse. Good luck ladies. If you have any doubt, remove the Mirena ASAP

Tried the Mirena IUD to stop heavy periods and 2 weeks later started having palpitations and racing heart everyday! My Doctor said he hadn’t heard of any correlation. One month later, and I think I’ll have it removed. Thanks ladies for all the info!

I had 3 mirenas in general over past 10 years. Each mirena gave me different side effects. The last one gave me palpitations and pain in the left side of my body.I went to emergency room and the run all the tests stating that my heart rate is irregular. When i mentioned mirena , kardiologist said that he had some women on mirena with the same symptoms. They offered to removed it in emergency room and i agreed. It just happened , so let's see.the point is, that hormons are powerful things and effect our body in many different ways.In Emergency rooms PA or Nurse practitioner can remove it, so u dont have to wait for gyn. appointment.

Hi there ,
I don’t know how long ago this was written I’ve had the mirena in for a year , I’ve had all the symptoms that you have described. I just had my iud removed yesterday as I was worried I could have a blood clot as I was experiencing severe chest pain and shortness of breath. I’m hoping that getting it removed will resolve the pain and also the brain fog , o was starting to think I was getting alZheimers at an early age or something. Still had a little chest pain today but not nearly as bad as I have been getting it

I had Kyleena in sept 2018. I had severe pain and got ovarian cysts shortly after. Everytime i ovulated or before menstruation i had severe pain, unbearable even to this day 14 months later. In Feb 2018 i started having heart irregularities and went to emergency approx. 7 times because i thought i was going to die. Everytime the ecg would show PACs and PVCs, thundering heart beats, and irregular flicking feeling in my chest. Ive developed random pain throughout my body and my eyes have started to bother me. I have an appointment in a few weeks with a gynecologist as my regular doc couldnt remove it. I have had Echo, holter monitors, ecg, blood work x20. Inconclusive other then seeing the beat irregularities. Every doctor just says its in my head. But i am like why, clearly something is going on with me. Ive started nerve pain gabapentin, got glasses, go to massage therapy, accupuncture, was seeing an internal medicine doctor, and soon a naturopath and dietitian. Im tired of feeling so sick all the time, being in agony and grasping for breath due to these heart beats.

I experienced the fast heart palpitations and shortness of breath as well. I know for a fact it was the mirena! Luckily i didn't have it in as long but sadly the effects will still be there once it's long and gone... I'm praying if I can get a good detox that maybe ill have hope getting the rest of this poison out my system.

I too believe I had heart palpitations from the Merina Coil, I had them for years and even had to take Inderral three times a day to keep them under control, so that I could keep working / operating at all. When I eventually did my own research online about palpitations I found so much information on the Merina Coil affecting people , that I immediately made an appointment to get it taken out. I noticed a huge improvement by day 4 afterwards. It is now one year later and I am perfect. I have not had any palpitations since then and I stopped using the Inderral to control them about 10 days after I had the Merina Coil out. It was known to my Gynecologist when I met him ( to get it out , I had to have a G.A as my doctor could not get it out ! ) that is a side effect of it , but my Doctor did not seem to know. I am like my old self again now, no palpitations, much healthier, no brain fog, no anxiety, no breathlessness, no bloating. Yes I had all those side effects that I see written in here by others. But all gone now.
