I had Mirena in for a little bit over 3 weeks and had it removed. I started noticing heart palpitations (skipped beats, racing heart, fluttering) and chest pain. I also started getting short of breath over nothing. Just a few steps and i was breathing hard and felt so tired. Since having it removed (2 days ago) i havent had palpitations, the chest pain doesnt feel to bad anymore, but i still feel very tired and sleepy all the time along witht he short of breath. Was wondering if anyone else felt like this with Mirena. Also, I have been bleeding for 11 days now, and since I had it removed its been heavier... normal?
I already went to my regular doctor and they did blood work, im wearing a hedart monitor for a few days, and I also had an ultrasound of my heart done. Need to wait for the results but in the mean time Im worrying about these symptoms.
Other symptoms i had while on Mirena: irritability, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, brain fog.

Yes, my daughter had the anxiety and panic attacks from the heart symptoms also. She is currently wearing a heart monitor and seeing a cardiologist .

My daughter had the mirena put in the summer of 2015 after having a baby. During her pregnancy she had symptoms of dizziness, tiredness and shortness of breath so when she started have them again we put it down to anxiety, and tried 2 different antidepressants which were also used to treat anxiety. The symptoms have gotten much worse, now multiple times a day she has racing heart, heavy chest, feeling faint, feeling like her heart is going to stop, palpitations and on and on. She cant work, she cant drive. It didnt even cross my mind that it could be the mirena until we saw posts like this. She has an appt in 2 weeks to get it removed, ill report back

Hi. I had the mirena inserted 5 weeks ago,and for 3 weeks I have been experiencing racing heart, flutters, short of breath,I'm over breathing and can't catch my breath, immediately yawning to catch my breath and still not satisfied. Ive ended up at emergency and chest is clear and lungs, and I'm getting enough oxygen. So why am I like it. They said im suffering from anxiety?? But why?? I was normal before I had it in. Im going to doctors tomorrow about getting it out. I cant live like this. The shortness of breath is horrible and hyperventilating

Hi Rach74, May I ask you, did your symptoms disappear after you had the mirena coil removed, please? I can't find answers in this topic whether removing the coil eliminates the heart palpitations or not. Thank you so much.

Posting back after my daughter had the IUD removed 8 days ago. Nothing showed on the heart monitor the whole time although she had all the symptoms previously described. She started feeling better the next day. I cant say its all gone, she has had a few episodes of the chest pressure and feeling faint, but she is definitely better and really hoping that as her body adjusts and hormone levels even out that she will be back to normal.

Hi I have the same experience to the letter. Just wondering if you had it removed and what was your outcome
Got Mirena Jan 2014.. Fairly good experience. My sex drive went down the tubes, very light period once a month (usually just a pantyliner would be enough)- still quite a nuisance. I could handle that. The problem was the irregular heartbeats and shortness of breath. I didn't put two and two together until recently but within the last year I experienced an irregular heartbeat which would make me gasp for breath and feel like I was going to have a heart attack. This would happen several times a day every day. I thought it was caffeine at first so I eliminated all caffeine throughout my day. I got the Mirena taken out in March of this year. I literally felt better that day and the next day. I know you're thinking this was in my head however this was extreme bouts of shortness of breath that would come and go. I have done extremely better since it has been removed and I hope that I am getting back to my normal self again. Libido also increased just within a couple of days.
It seems from reading these posts the Mirena does not affect everyone in this way but for some reason some people experience the irregular heart beating and shortness of breath. Like many others the doctor argued with me and told me and assured me the Mirena hormones were only localized in the uterus and could not be causing my symptoms. Don't listen to anyone, you know your body the very best. Well wishes to everyone. It was nice reading other women's experiences to be similar to mine. I thought I was losing my mind.

Ive been having the same problems. Just came across this page. had Mirena in since Nov of 2016 and it was 2-3 weeks i was having heart palpitations. Had the monitor put on but couldn't find why i was having them. They told me stress. But i see it is very common with the Mirena. I plan on seeing my dr tomorrow to see what he think i should do, if anyone knows if it will stop after your body gets used to it please let me know. Im also out of breath and tired ALL THE TIME!

I have a different IUD, Paragard. Had it first put in 2yrs ago and besides heavy periods I never had any other complications until 2 weeks ago. My symptoms started with heart palpitations, trouble breathing, sweating, and dizziness all at once. I figured it could be high blood pressure and quickly made an appointment with my doctor... I am perfectly healthy, however she ordered some lab work, and also asked me if I was using birth control, she let me know IUD's cause heart palpitations. Results came back with mild Anemia and have been asked to get additional lab work done. I have already looked into the connection with IUD's and anemia/heart problems and its pretty common. It seems that there is no safe option. I am now debating using any other birth control because of this experience.

Omg yes. Ive had all of those symtoms! Ive had mirena for 6 months and ive experienced my heart racing, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, mood swings. Ive had broncitis for a couple of months now and im feeling intense pressure in my head mostly between my ears. I was dropped from medicaid and i am uninsured. The effects of the mirena in combination with broncitis have been DEVASTATING. I am always bedridden. I lost my job. I was unable to pass a test to get into college. I feel so hopeless..

I'm experiencing the very same effects, after 3 months of Mirena insertion. After 8 months of suffering, my sister told me seeing how the only thing that changed in my life was the iud, I had it taken out, even though, my doctor told me it wasnt the iud... its been one month, still so dizzy daily that I'm unable to work or drive, most of my time is spent in bed, but I am getting slowly better. This has been the worst illness, bedridden unable to work or care for my children. Ive lost my job, insurance and soon my home. I need to know if anyone found an effective way to get your body to function again?

You know, the Nuva Ring does not cause this in women and it is very safe, i have been using it for 5 months and i have had not one side effect, no weight gain, my periods are at a more regular flow, i have less cramping, and i don't feel and it's a ring so its not a pill, i refuse to take the pill due to all the problems i have heard for women who have or who are on the pill.. Way too many problems and not very safe. I have not heard one female tell me that they like the pill. I would suggest the Nuva Ring to every teen and young adult who wants to be on birth control..

Yes, almost all of them. Every body is different, it took me almost three years to experience those same symptoms (and hot flashes/night sweats), which prompted me to request for my Thyroid TSH, T4, T3, to be tested. I was right, diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. Was told by my GYN & Endocrinologist that Mirena could not have caused this, but I disagreed. Had it removed the next day, felt 80% better. It's been a week, light bleeding & cramps. I lost 2 inches off my Mirena belly and 5 pounds in four days. Still dealing with the extreme fatigue and breathing difficulties. I follow up with the Endocrinologist in two months. I'm sure it will take time for this poison to make it's way out of my system though, it had 3 years to penetrate.

mirena is capabable of causing heavy bleeding and I am pretty sure from what I have read researched it can cause some (many) of the side effects you have experienced I think it is so wise for them to check the heart using at halter monitor (they attach it to your chest and you wear it home it takes recordings and tracings of your heart while you are at home) and I am thankful they did the blood work, perhaps this will remove itself completely out of your system and you will continue to improve I am so sorry this happened but what works for one person does not for another the important thing now is that you be checked out and once verified you are OK then talk with the doctor to be reassured and then you can perhaps get past this meanwhile take good care and do the best you can best wishes

I had a similar thing before>And still have heart beat interuptiuons. Especialy when I am smoking. I didnt have shortnes of breath. But twice in a bus I was going and I had this thing when everything started going black, nousea, stars infront of my eyes, Extreme sweating. VERY unpleasent feeling. Once I drank some water and it stopped. The other time I came out of the bus it was -10 so kind of became ok. It never happened again. But heart beat interuptions still concerns me! Do you have anything similar?

Aldorado, if your having these kind of probs with heart skips, you MUST have that checked. 'done is notorious for having bad effects on the heart. This question was due to birth control. Totally different causes. Please go to the "drugs A to Z" at the top of the page and read up on the professional site for methadone. Please be safe and have your heart checked. There's a member here (very young) who spent 9 days in the hospital because of heart related issues when she was on 'done. Nothing to mess around with. Please be safe. chris

what do you mean "done? what is it? I did a research on google. It says if you are healthy individual and heaving these problem stop drinking cofee, smoking, and so on. And I noticed I have it when I smoke too much. Kind feel alittle heavy on a heart. I am done with meth. So my next step is cigs and weed. I think a mix of them does it too my heart especialy when I used to drink alots of cofee. But I know I have to get my heart checked. Once I went to my meth doc, he listened to my heartbeat, he said its fine, but I didnt feel interaptions at that time. So I think most likely its due to smoking. Cigs are heart breakers!

Sorry. In the states some call Methadone, 'done. As to not confuse Meth with Methamphetamine. Just a short version. And it can cause problems. I will ask "youneverknow" to respond. She's the one who ended up in the hospital with this side effect that was directly related to the 'done.

I have something very similar to what you are describing. Out of nowhere I get these weird heartbeats. It feels like I'm getting a half heartbeat. Anyway when they start up a lot of times I can get my normal heart rhythm back if I force myself to cough really hard. But when that doesn't work I get most of the symptoms you're describing. My Cardiologist put me on Mexiletine and that seems to help. Although lately I've had them coming back. Wish I knew of some kind of cure to this. It's very frightening and interrupts my day to day duties.
I had a friend that had heart palpitations while on Mirena. From what her doctor said I guess it's somewhat common. Common but not safe. He removed it. She had irregular bleeding after it was taken out for about a month. Anything that contains a hormone or synthetic hormone can affect your moods like the symptoms of depression and anxiety that you are experiencing and other problems as well. Hope that helps. Good luck.
