I have been taking 10mg of amitriptyline for Insomnia, for a month. It's helping with sleep, but has caused constipation. I am hoping my body adjusts soon. I would be interested to hear from others who have had this side effect, as I don't want to stop taking this drug, but am not prepared to take laxatives long term.

I am on amitriptyline 20mg. I do find i get constipation. When i started to eat foods like Dates which are also very good for me, i bought prune juice and have a glass every day.
It has definitely really helped with constipation, if you do buy prune juice make sure that it is not made from concentrated it does say on the carton, the one from concentrate was no good at all and a waste of money. Both dates and prunes will definitely help you and the prune juice acts quite quickly. I hope this works for you as constipation is a horribe thing and painful
Never caused constipation with me. I find it hard to empty my bladder which is annoying. I am on 40mg for pain. I also have to take it a good 4 hours before bed otherwise I cant sleep. Otherwise though I highly recommend it. I was suicidal before this drug.
