Lisinopril: Cardiac Uses and Mechanism

A review of lisinopril uses and mechanism of action in heart conditions.

Video transcript

Hello and welcome to "VideoScript", presented by Drugs.com.

Today in the first of three presentations, we are reviewing lisinopril, a commonly used medication in the class of drugs known as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, or ACE inhibitors.

Lisinopril is available generically and by various brand names, including Prinivil and Zestril. It is also formulated in combination with hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic. Generic lisinopril is safe, effective and affordable.

Lisinopril has been shown in clinical trials to be effective in treating high blood pressure, congestive heart failure when used in combination with other medications, and in improving survival after a heart attack.

Lisinopril is also used to prevent kidney damage in patients with high blood pressure or diabetes. It may also be used for other indications as determined by a health care provider.

Lisinopril works by inhibiting the angiotensin converting enzyme. By interfering with this ACE enzyme, the production of angiotensin II is blocked.

Angiotensin II is a chemical in the body that can lead to high blood pressure.

When angiotensin II is blocked, the blood vessels dilate and blood can flow more smoothly. The heart is able to pump blood more effectively, and kidney disease due to high blood pressure or diabetes may be reduced.
