Video transcript

Emgality injection is used to prevent migraines and treat episodic cluster headaches in adults.

It’s available as a pre-filled, single-dose pen (also called an autoinjector) and pre-filled, single-dose syringes.

It comes in two different doses, and is injected once a month under the skin. Emgality injection is a CGRP antagonist.

If you have been prescribed Emgality, the brand name for gal-can-ez-umab, you should have received training from your healthcare professional on how to give yourself the injection safely.

In this video, we will review step-by–step how to give yourself an Emgality injection using the pre-filled pen.

Before using Emgality, review the Instructions for Use provided with your prescription. When you are ready to inject your dose, gather your materials.

You will need: Your Emgality pen that has been at room temperature for 30 minutes, a piece of gauze or a cotton ball, an alcohol swab, and a sharps container.

Now that you are ready to inject your dose, let’s review the steps on how to inject your Emgality pen.

Step One: Check your pen to make sure the medication isn’t expired, frozen, or cloudy. It should look colorless to slightly yellow to slightly brown, and shouldn’t have particles in it.

Step two: Wash your hands with soap and water.

Step three: Choose your injection site. If you are injecting Emgality by yourself, you can inject it into your stomach, 2 inches away from your belly button, or into the front of your thigh, 2 inches above the knee and 2 inches below the groin.

If someone else is helping you, they can inject it into the back of your upper arm or buttocks. Do not inject into the same spot if you are giving two injections for your first dose. Clean your chosen injection site with an alcohol swab.

Step four: While the pen is locked, twist off the base cap and throw it away.

Step five: Place the clear base flat against your skin at the injection site, then twist the top of the pen to the “unlocked” position.

Step six: While holding the pen firmly against your skin, press and hold the teal injection button for up to 10 seconds.

You will hear a click signaling the injection has started, and a second loud click when the injection is complete. The injection is done when you can see the gray plunger.

Step seven: Remove the pen from your skin and place it directly into a sharps container.

Step eight: If you have any bleeding at the injection site, you can press a cotton ball or gauze over the injection site until the bleeding has stopped.

If you have any questions about how to inject Emgality, contact your healthcare provider or the manufacturer, Lilly.
