Applies to magnesium sulfate: crystal, ointment, powder, powder for solution, powder for suspension

Major Side Effects

If any of the following side effects occur while taking magnesium sulfate, check with your doctor immediately:

  • Confusion
  • dizziness or lightheadedness
  • fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
  • low blood pressure
  • muscle weakness
  • skin infection after soaking
  • sleepiness

Minor Side Effects

Some magnesium sulfate side effects may not need any medical attention. As your body gets used to the medicine these side effects may disappear. Your health care professional may be able to help you prevent or reduce these side effects, but do check with them if any of the following side effects continue, or if you are concerned about them:

Frequency not reported: Hypermagnesemia (signs include drowsiness, loss of reflexes, nausea, vomiting, flushing, thirst, hypotension, hypothermia, bradycardia, confusion, electrolyte and fluid abnormalities, slurred speech, muscle weakness, muscle paralysis, blurred or double vision, CNS depression, respiratory depression, respiratory paralysis, circulatory collapse, renal failure, coma, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest), hypocalcemia with tetany secondary to hypermagnesemia, alkalosis[Ref]

Gastrointestinal
