1 drug interaction and 11 additional warnings found for the following 2 drugs:
- Citrucel SF (methylcellulose)
- linaclotide
Drug interactions
Minor drug interactions
Minor:
methylcellulose linaclotide
Applies to: Citrucel SF (methylcellulose) and linaclotide
The concomitant use of linaclotide with proton pump inhibitors, laxatives, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may increase the risk of diarrhea. The clinical significance is unknown.

Food/lifestyle interactions
Moderate food/lifestyle interactions
Moderate:
methylcellulose Food/Lifestyle
Applies to: Citrucel SF (methylcellulose)
Adjust dosing interval
Bulk-forming laxatives such as guar gum, psyllium, polycarbophil, or methylcellulose may affect the bioavailability of concomitantly administered substances due to their effect on the rate of gastrointestinal transit and gastric emptying.
Management
In general, oral medications should be administered at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after dosing of the bulk-forming laxative.

Moderate:
linaclotide Food/Lifestyle
Applies to: linaclotide
Adjust dosing interval
Administration of linaclotide in the fed condition resulted in more gastrointestinal side effects and more frequent and looser stools, than when it was administered under fasting conditions.
Management
It is recommended to take linaclotide 30 minutes before a meal.

Disease interactions
9 potential interactions Applies to: 7 conditions, including Diarrhea, Hypokalemia, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Hyponatremia, and Renal Dysfunction.
Diarrhea
Moderate:
linaclotide
Linaclotide has a moderate potential interaction with Diarrhea.
The use of linaclotide may cause diarrhea that might be associated with dizziness, syncope, hypotension and electrolyte abnormalities (hypokalemia and hyponatremia). It is recommended to withhold dosing and rehydrate patients if severe diarrhea occurs. Care should be exercised when prescribing this agent to patients at risk of diarrhea or dehydration.
Electrolyte Abnormalities
Moderate:
linaclotide
Linaclotide has a moderate potential interaction with Electrolyte Abnormalities.
Gastrointestinal Obstruction
Major:
Citrucel SF
The methylcellulose in Citrucel SF has a major potential interaction with Gastrointestinal Obstruction.
The use of bulk producing laxatives is contraindicated in patients with intestinal obstruction or fecal impaction. Bulk producing laxatives can exacerbate these conditions.
Major:
Citrucel SF
The methylcellulose in Citrucel SF has a major potential interaction with Gastrointestinal Obstruction.
The use of laxatives is contraindicated in patients with intestinal obstruction disorders. Patients with intestinal obstruction disorders may need their underlying condition treated to correct the constipation. Some laxatives require reduction in the colon to their active form to be effective which may be a problem in patients with intestinal obstruction.
Major:
linaclotide
Linaclotide has a major potential interaction with Gastrointestinal Obstruction.
The use of linaclotide is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction. Because linaclotide accelerates gastrointestinal transit, it can exacerbate a blockage.
Hypokalemia
Moderate:
linaclotide
Linaclotide has a moderate potential interaction with Hypokalemia.
Hyponatremia
Moderate:
linaclotide
Linaclotide has a moderate potential interaction with Hyponatremia.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Major:
Citrucel SF
The methylcellulose in Citrucel SF has a major potential interaction with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
The use of laxatives is contraindicated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease may experience colonic perforation with use of stimulant laxatives.
Renal Dysfunction
Moderate:
Citrucel SF
The methylcellulose in Citrucel SF has a moderate potential interaction with Renal Dysfunction.
Bulk producing laxatives require the consumption of at least 8 ounces of fluid per each dose. Patients with fluid restriction conditions such as renal dysfunction may benefit more from emollient or stimulant laxatives.

Drug Interaction Classification
| Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit. | |
| Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances. | |
| Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan. | |
| No interaction information available. |
