For Birth Control "I've had Skyla in for a little over a year now, and although there is cramping that comes with it, I would definitely recommend it! The insertion was really painful! I had to go back a second time because the first time it was unbearable. My OBGYN prescribed me some pain meds and a pill that widened my cervix so it would go in easier. That night, I began to bleed a lot and have horrible cramps that lasted two days. After the first week, I was completely fine, occasional cramping, but I have always had really bad cramps. It has been effective and seems like the easiest, most cost-efficient form of birth control!"

For Birth Control "So I received the Skyla around Feb 3, 2015. It hasn't been that long, but it is very relieving knowing it's pretty impossible to have a child right now. The insertion was EXTREMELY painful. May have been worth it for that time, but I won't be doing it again. I have tattoos and a high pain tolerance, and it was horribly painful. It felt like someone was scraping my cervix with a knife. Anyway, everything seemed good. I started off with some spotting here and there, but it was so little that it didn't bother me. Now this last period is never-ending. Like I said, it hasn't been months or anything of straight bleeding, but I can tell that something isn't right. Skyla is new, so do your research."

For Birth Control "I am 21, and I had my Skyla put in over 6 months ago. I took two ibuprofen before going to the doctor. The insertion was painful for about 30 seconds (really bad cramping). About an hour later, I had some bleeding, then some heavy cramps, but after taking Midol, they went away. I bled for about 4 weeks straight and had some pretty bad cramps during that time. After that, my period became normal (only once a month for 4-5 days with light to normal bleeding). I do experience some bad cramping from time to time, mostly before my period and a few days after it stops, but after taking Midol or Aleve, it goes away. I also have a history of ovarian cysts and endometriosis but have not had any problems with that since my Skyla! I recommend this!"

For Birth Control "When I first got Skyla, I had about a month of pretty intense cramping, and then after that, I would cramp each month when I ovulated and then on my period. I had a lot of breakthrough bleeding and spent about half of each month spotting. I also found myself having pretty severe anxiety while using Skyla. It actually got to the point where I got the device out after about a year. My mood began to improve about a week after removing the device, and I lost about 10 pounds in the first month after stopping use. I would not recommend this device, it was a nightmare and caused quite a bit of unnecessary pain and cramping."

For Birth Control "This is my fourth month with Skyla. The first month was the worst pain, but I thought surely it would get better. It did not. I bleed randomly without any warnings. And I cramp almost all of the time. Today, I was cramping so bad in class I was on the verge of tears. It hurt so bad my legs were aching, and I kept falling asleep to avoid the agonizing pain. I don’t understand why it causes so many issues, but I can’t wait to take it out. It’s just not for me."

For Birth Control "I recently got Skyla inserted at my gynecologist. I am 20 years old and n/p. I didn't take any precautions by using pain meds for the sake of seeing how bad the pain would be. I was not on my period. The process of inserting the speculum, insertion of the measuring device, and insertion of Skyla took all but a minute tops. The pain was not unbearable at all, it just seemed to be the equivalent of three severe cramps in a row. It seemed more of a discomfort than pain. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it about a 4 or 5. This was three days ago. Initially, there was a small amount of bleeding the first day and a lot of cramps. The second day, there was no bleeding, just mild cramps, reaching the third day, I have cramps here and there, but it is manageable."

For Birth Control "I am 36 years old and got the Skyla IUD in March 2021 (now June 2022). The insertion process was about what I had anticipated, shocking but not more painful than an abortion. I bled almost daily for 6 months. I wanted to stick with it, and from month 6-11 I loved the secure feeling. I had lost some of the weight gained from Nuva (fat as plus emotional disaster), but I couldn't enjoy sex due to bleeding/cramping/pain (the doctor says the IUD is fine). Now in month 15, I am really seeing the emotional disaster is increasingly worse. I wake up crying daily, the brain fog is crazy. I am a PhD in psychology with ADHD, and my Adderall literally does nothing even when I double it. I can barely get any real mental work completed. I'm a huge psychodissociative anxious, depressed, sleepy person, not even having sex. I haven't decided yet if I will stick with it, but your reviews have helped me realize the low hormone does still impact me. It's not my imagination, it's still hormonal birth control despite localized."

For Birth Control "I've had Skyla for 7 months, and the night before, I made the mistake of reading the reviews of how painful the insertion was. On a scale from 1 to 10, it was maybe a 2. The procedure was quick and painless. Afterwards, I had no cramping or bleeding. So far, I have had no negative side effects, and I am very happy with my decision of getting Skyla inserted."

For Birth Control "I had my Skyla IUD placed in October of 2014. The procedure was quick, just under 10 minutes. I took 800 mg of ibuprofen before it to offset the cramping. It was 3 cramps, the last one being the worst but nothing I couldn't handle. I used to get horrible periods, 7 days of bleeding and cramping requiring 800 mg of ibuprofen around the clock. The first two months with the Skyla, I experienced cramping and bleeding just about every day. At the end of month 2, the bleeding and cramping subsided. I haven't gained weight, don't feel out of emotional control, and haven't had a period since! I love this. The only reason for a 9/10 is I believe I may have developed slightly more acne. It's hard to tell since I had acne before, though. Still so happy!"

For Birth Control "Had Skyla placed today, roughly around 5 hours ago. I am familiar with the IUD scene, having had both Paragard and Mirena in the past. (27 y/o with 2 kiddos). Anyway, my MD used a local anesthetic (scary as hell because I despise needles). Was not on my period at the time, by the way. I have to admit, it was quite a pinch, a little painful, but brief and tolerable. I have not had any problems with previous IUDs as well. I removed Paragard to have my 2nd child, and then my Mirena was about to expire, so I switched to Skyla. As of now, minimal bleeding, zero cramping, no problems or complaints here!! Don't believe all of the horror stories you hear, everyone is different, and our bodies are not all going to react the same! Take a deep breath and good luck!"

For Birth Control "Had Skyla for 4 months, and I like it so far. My only bad experience was the side effects once the IUD was inserted. I had terrible cramps and bled non-stop for a month and a half and had heard that these side effects will occur for the first 3 months, luckily, mine was half that time. It was horrible, but I pushed through it and haven't had problems since. I usually had heavy periods, and now they're light. Unlike me, my sister had a better experience after her insertion and was cramping for 2 days and felt better after. Side effects vary, but I'm happy with my IUD. The insertion wasn't bad at all since my doctor gave me misoprostol, ibuprofen, and I was on my period, so my uterus was very relaxed for the procedure. I'm 19 and haven't had kids."

For Birth Control "I got Skyla inserted when I was twenty years old. I had a very irregular period and was told that Skyla would help regulate it. I got the IUD inserted on May 6, 2015, and now on December 4, 2015, I'm still bleeding. I have days when the bleeding is very light, and I have days when the bleeding is heavy. I have terrible cramping, I even stayed home from class sometimes because of the pain. I'm seriously considering getting the IUD removed. I have to buy two boxes of pads (28 count) every month. I definitely do not believe this birth control is worth it."

For Birth Control "I am 21 and have not had kids. It was just in and out of the office. It wasn't too bad of an experience for me. I just didn't think about it while it was being put in. It went smoothly and fairly well! It also helps that I have an awesome doctor who talked to me step by step. I bled for maybe a couple of days, if that, and had minimal cramping. It's been a little over a week, and I don't even notice or feel it! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones!"

For Birth Control "I got Skyla inserted June 2016 after childbirth. It was better than Mirena. However, my experience was horrible, and I was dumb enough to listen to my doctor's advice, and I kept it in for 3 years. I experienced horrible mood swings, anxiety, I gained 35 lbs (I went from 180 lbs to 215 lbs within the first year), recurring BV/yeast infections, and cramping and bleeding between periods. Ladies, I don’t recommend it. I just removed it today, by the way... I never got pregnant, but I put my body through hell for 3 years to prevent pregnancy."

For Birth Control "So I was one of the unfortunate ones who had severe pain, cramps, and bleeding for a month after insertion. It's possible, and it seriously sucks, and I went to another gyno to make sure everything was okay; he said everything was literally perfect and if his training doctor could practice on me as well because everything was so great. Other than the first full three months of constant bleeding and pain, my periods went away, and I have not had to worry about pregnancy in over a year. It's pretty important to check the strings (I usually do that in the shower every few weeks or so) to make sure it's working and in place. I tend to recommend this to any female who asks. It's well worth it, and reportedly more effective than a condom."

For Birth Control "I had Skyla placed in June of 2016, the insertion was not a problem. I was told getting it placed while you're on your period would not be painful. I went back to my normal routine when I left the office. I have no weird reactions or crazy long periods. Everything was normal for me until Thanksgiving of 2017. I had just had a period two weeks before, but the day of Thanksgiving, I had heavy bleeding for about two hours, then it was gone. No cramping. No other symptoms. I Googled it, so I took a pregnancy test just to rule it out. To my surprise, it was positive. My OBGYN pulled my IUD out a few days later, and it had not moved, it was in place, and I was 5 weeks pregnant. We went from 0% of a full pregnancy to now 95% of full pregnancy."

For Birth Control "I love Skyla. I'm so glad I got this IUD, the best birth control I've ever been on. Other than a little extra bleeding after insertion, I've had absolutely no pain or side effects of any kind. It's so low maintenance, you don't have to do a thing and you're protected. I will say that the insertion was uncomfortable, but it was quick and the discomfort soon subsided. I've had it now for 6 months, I still get my period, but it's only for a few days, and it's extremely light. Call me paranoid, but I like getting my period, it's reassuring to me. I've heard with Mirena, it stops, but maybe Skyla is a little different since it's a lower dose of hormones. Either way, I can't say enough about how much I love Skyla."

For Birth Control "Just had Skyla put in yesterday. Overall, super pleased with it. I was on the pill for cramps, but I wasn't taking it as directed. I am about to get married and don't need a baby! I am 25, not sexually active, no kids. I am a weenie for pain, and I read some of the horror stories, so I was nervous but had reassurance from my best friend who already had Skyla. Insertion was not as terrible as I thought it might be. Around a 5-6 on the scale, but the discomfort is brief, maybe a minute. I didn't have any issues as far as dizziness or weakness. I did bleed from insertion, but my doctor had me use a tampon, and it was no biggie, just like getting your period, and it stopped within 24 hours. Minor cramps briefly after. Overall positive experience."

For Birth Control "The insertion and afterwards was extremely painful, but pain meds and not moving from bed made it manageable. After 2 days, the pain got a little better, but it took a month for the insertion pain to go away. My first period was SO BAD. I thought it was going to be the end of me. It was 3 weeks of intense bleeding and cramping. The periods do get better, however, after 4 periods, they are still long and painful. I feel as though I always have random terrible cramping, but I’m going to give my body the full 6 months to adjust before I remove it. The positive side is it is very effective, and besides cramping and bleeding, I have had ZERO side effects. On the pill, I had terrible weight gain, migraines, depression, anxiety, and more. I haven’t had any problems with my IUD in that regard, thank God. I’ll be writing back after 6 months to see if the random cramps all the time stopped."

For Birth Control "I've had Skyla for 5 months now. Insertion was nowhere near as painful as I expected, just felt like a sharp cramp. However, bad cramping started the next day and did not stop until I got my period a month later. My first two periods were very painful, but after that, very manageable. I never experience random cramping and very rarely experience random light bleeding. I can't feel it at all and notice no hormonal changes to my body, which is rare for me, as I am very sensitive to hormones. I had to come off the pill because I was constantly emotional, tired, and nauseous. I haven't gained any weight with Skyla either. I feel much more in control of my life with this IUD and would recommend it to anyone willing to stick the 1st month cramps out."

For Birth Control "I have had my Skyla for about 8-9 months now, and I recommend it to everyone I know. The day before I had my insertion, I read this whole page of reviews and really psyched myself out about how painful it would be to be put in. Yes, it was very painful during and quite uncomfortable the rest of the day (I would recommend a day off from work that day). I bled a bit and avoided sex due to it being uncomfortable for a few weeks, after that, it was totally fine, and my boyfriend couldn't even tell it was there. Again, if you're on the fence about this, I highly recommend it. Although painful and a little annoying at first, I'm now 8 months in, and as long as I'm interested in birth control, I'll never go back to anything else!"

For Birth Control "26 years old with previously regular periods, lasting 5 days. Cramped, but normal. I dealt with cystic acne during my cycle. I had Skyla inserted April 2015, so 6 months now. It was extremely painful. The cramps/pain/bleeding did not stop. It would come on suddenly/severely that it totally had me hit the floor in agony. MRI showed a cyst burst; I never had cysts prior to this. I continued to have horrible cramping/spotting throughout the months and especially during my period. Cystic acne increased to a level I have never experienced before. 6 months later, still horrible acne, period lasts @2 weeks, with bad cramping, 2 weeks in between, and then the period begins again. It is coming out! I waited the 6 months, but this is not acceptable."

For Birth Control "The insertion was extremely painful and traumatic. The side effects after were nearly unbearable, including intermittent pain and random bleeding. I considered having it removed before I even found out about my pregnancy, it has since been removed. I had Skyla for 3 long months before becoming pregnant. I found out Friday my pregnancy is ectopic. I am now awaiting my best case scenario impending miscarriage, and worst case scenario surgery, infertility, or even death. I wish I would have listened to all of the 'horror stories' I was told by doctors to ignore. Multiple women tried to talk me out of this device with their own horrible IUD experiences, but I didn't think it could happen to me. I am now very worried about my health, my fertility, my relationship, my safety, and my future. I feel I was tricked into thinking I was doing something positive for myself."

For Birth Control "Number one, don't listen to the negativity the smaller groups of bad experiences have. Skyla was never said to be for everyone, which is why I don't understand women that tell you NOT to get it. Your best option is to try it. And to people who have certain health conditions, unless a woman has the same thing as you, don't listen either. Anyway, I have a 7-year-old, and I got Skyla in January, and it's now June. I have had bad acne and cramps and heavy bleeding since I was 11, and Skyla reduced my periods and cramps. It did not do much with my acne, but that's fine. Also, Skyla is uncomfortable to insert (not gonna lie), but I literally was with my OB for 10 minutes and left. It's been okay since. Just try it for yourself."
