I was on Xarelto from May 2016-September 2016 and gained 20 pounds. Can't seem to lose it no matter what I do. I'll lose 2-3 pounds but then it comes right back. Uncomfortable almost constant abdominal bloating too. Has anyone managed to lose the weight?
I have been taking Xarelto for a month. Had weight issues since birth of children but it has been stable for years. Since taking this awful drug I have put on at least 6kg with no change in diet and I have had the most awful upset stomach. Phoned doctor yesterday and he has taken me off this with absolutely no argument which makes me think others have complained. I am drinking lots but pretty sure still retaining fluid. It has to be this drug.
Well Xarelto caused sever fluid retention while I took it. I gained 12 kg in 3 weeks. I exercised 5 times a week and ate absolutely normal. I weighed 56 kg at a height of 5''8 and after these 3 weeks weighed 68 kg. I took it for 3 months. I didn't loose any water afterwards. Xarelto did something to my body nobody can put a finger on what it might has changed.
I have been on Xarelto now for almost 7 months and I have gained easily 25lbs! I have Crohn's disease in which I have Always had a trouble keeping weight on, but when I developed SVC syndrome which was caused by blood clot, they put me on blood thinners to dissolve it!
I also have a motility disorder which allows me to only have liquids! So I live on my smoothies which consists: spinach, Kale, Chard, cucumbers, acai berries, pineapple and banana! Plus I eat oatmeal! That is all I can tolerate yet I can't lose the weight! And the fact that I gained weight the Xarelto is the only thing that I can assume is doing this! Please let me know if when u stopped your weight went back to normal! I am going to be off soon since I had an angioplasty! Thank you! I am desperate to find out why this is happening!!
Thank you for your comment! My weight isn't back to normal yet! The water I gained is still in my body. I had many tests done but according to those blood tests, etc. I am completely healthy and all my organs function as they should. A doctor now had an idea that a colleague of his in research observed. When the thrombocytes of lab rats were diminished to a minimum, they gained weight right away.
Xarelto also lowers the thrombocyte levels in the blood, maybe this is some kind of first explanation for this problem. Because Xarelto is also some kind of platelet (function) inhibitor. But we can't prove that because the functioning of the thrombocytes are almost impossible to determine.
I had some problems with the regularity of my period and hopefully by getting them regularly now again I can lose weight! But I'll let you know how my progress goes!
There needs to be a study on this. I took it for 3 weeks but immediately i did not feel well and i blew up like a balloon. today i've decided to go back on coumadin.
Finally an answer to my two years of complaining. I have gained at least 50 pounds since being on Xarelto and it just keeps going up. No amount of exercise or dieting seems to matter. My legs are
both swollen and I suffer from bloat, gas and swelling every day. Someone has to look into this. We are not all imagining this. My Doctor doesn't seem to believe this is being caused by the Xarelto.
I cannot go back on coumadin because of 4 blood clots. Am I doomed to go from a size 12 to a size 18 because I need medication? I just discovered this site and was absolutely happy to read others are suffering. Of course, I'm not glad you are suffering but I sure am glad to know I'm not nuts, nor am I alone in this battle. But still I ask what do we do??
I was put on warifin 6 years ago for 3 months after an ablation. I gained a ton of abdominal weight during that time. Afterwards I ate extremely well & started working out again hard. It took nearly 8 months yes 8 months to lose the weight. Recently I was put on XERELTO or as I prefer to call it (the devil drug) for 3 months. I cannot begin to tell u how my body changed. I blew up like an absolute balloon, I have easily gained 20 lbs. I switched to a baby aspirin 6 days ago as I was only required to stay on xerelto for 3 months. I have only noticed the slightest change in my bloat, but I have started a juice cleanse & my exercise routine again today since I got the ok from my dr.
My comment for everyone based on my experience is you will only begin lose the weight after you go off these poisons!! But once you are off you must be diligent with eating healthy, start a strict cardio routine & if u have access to a sauna or steam room try to sit in one for 20 minutes/day to speed up the process. That worked for me the last time after warifin. My advice for everyone is to relax!! The weight will come off!! But it will be VERY gradual!! If you were on xerelto for 3 months it will take DOUBLE the amt of time to lose the weight!! I don't know why this is... there is something the Drs don't want to divulge b/c if people knew then it would be very hard to get people to take these drugs at all. Just stick to your routine & put it out of your mind, then one day when you least expect it you will look in the mirror & see the body u knew & loved! Good luck to all!!! God bless!!
Now I have an explanation of why I've gained so much weight in such a short time. Had lost on WW and am gaining it all back. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I knew it, I knew it! I have been on it for two months and hope I can come off really son. I hate it. have gained weight (I eat almost nothing). Swollen feet and ankles which Ive never had before. Tired all the time and weak on my legs. Doctors would not agree with me that its xarelto. Pharmacist told me that others have told him the same thing.
Im glad that my problems have now been validated by others having the same symptoms.. altho sorry they do.
I was on Heparin and Lovenox shots for passing blood clot to lung, tapered of to Warfarin. Then was on Warfarin for 4 yrs. Thought the weight gain was from being immobile. Then got diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had to go back on heparin shots until my insurance would cover xarelto, so I could take my chemotherapy. After I started xarelto I noticed the weight coming back fast. I have to be on a blood thinner for life because of blood disorder and passing blood clots to both lungs twice. What in this world can I take or do to get rid of at least some of this weight. I swell all over some days, the Dr. gave me some fluid pills but only worked slightly and only when I am taking them. I am so tired all the time pain all over my body, especially my feet and legs they hurt so bad. Anyone have any ideas???
These 2 issues were not reported as complaints in the 3 medical trials. Have you changed your diet or any medications or supplements?
The answer is YES !!! I have been taking Xeralto for 3 weeks now and my body did not react well to it. I retained so much water in my stomach and my legs. It bothered me so much that i went back to coumadin. Xeralto is horrible.
After 3 weeks on xarelto I gained 12 lbs, mostly in my abdomen and swollen legs, it also increased my fibromyalgia pain to an unbearable level worst ever!!!
I just started taking xarelto about a week now and within those first few days i have experienced stomach problems meaning it feels like i need to be near a toilet every hour. I dont mind it if it clears up the bloodclot . Ive hardly eaten anything lately as my appetite has greatly decreased. Only eating with my medicine. Speak to your doctor weigh your options. Check out all the pros and cons of all medicines available to you. And, hopefully the risk is worth the life saver.
I’ve been taking Xarelto for nearly two months now, and noticed weight gain within about a week to 10 days. Not too bad, but was aware if some tummy upsets and bloating. At two weeks I’d gained 2kg - highly unusual for me. I asked the Dr, who quickly said no, Xarelto didn't have that side effect.
So I thought if not exercised and eaten a few too many buscuuts. But I’ve always been on the light side. If anything I have lost weight too easily.
The last time my weight crept up like this - with no change in diet - was many years ago when I was on antidepressants.
Now I AM feeling depressed! Not literally; but really annoyed.

Oh my goodness. I have been on Xarelto for over a year now. I was on Warphrin before. I too have gained so much weight, I am working out harder than ever, sometimes 8 session a week twice a day, walking, eating healthy, drinking water, cut our carbs and its just getting worse. Suffered with eating disorders my whole life so this is so sad and depressing for me. Has anyone had any luck in with loosin the weight?
