My son has been taking Megestrol for 3-4 months, his weight is back up and he has an appetite again. He is on Corizone because he tested low. The plan is to taper him off over the next 3 weeks. We are worried about short term and long term side effects and any effects the tapering process could have.
My son had a brain tumor and has been through chemo and radiation. His cancer is now in remission and his treatments are all finished.
When being tapered off of Megestrol are there any side effects?

Hey Madolin,
There is a website that iIfound that describes the withdrawl symptoms for this medication called Megestrol or Megace. Try googling "Megestrol withdrawls" and scroll down to the site called:
doublecheckmd.com/EffectsDetail.do?dname=Megace&sid=1782&eid=1732
The header name will be Megace(megestrol).
It appears that there is definitely a syndrome of conditions associated with megestrol withdrawl that you should be prepared for.
Hope this helps,
Laurie
I would taper this medication as given by your medical professional and just keep tabs on any abnormal or extreme changes with him through this process. Keeping a journal helps greatly always when tending to someone with life threatening or serious illnesses and is being tended to consistently... As for discompfort or any other medical issues you may encounter, I would speak with the doctor about other medicines or regimens that can benefit toward recovering and getting off the medication that he is on now... Sounds like you may need to talk with the doctor a little more about your concerns and what to expect in the next year or so... sorry to hear about his pain and going through this disease... hope this was a little helpful and gives some insight...
