Bupropion (generic Wellbutrin). Used as an antidepressant, for weight loss, and smoking cessation, bupropion may lead to a positive screen for amphetamine, methamphetamine, and LSD.

Most resources online say Wellbutrin will not show up in a drug test; however, according to my Davis drug guide it can cause a false positive for amphetamines

Not much more to add. Laurie is truly a gift here with sincere answers to folks' concerns and questions. In my short time here, I'd even suggest she is the angel of drug.com when it comes to psychotropic medication and mental health issues. Laurie - YOU ROCK! As for your case Jaspun86, as long as you have a valid script for the wellbutrin and have been taking it as directed, you should be protected from an employer's consequences for testing positive. I hope that is your case and that you are not fishing for a way out of a jam.

I agree with what gentle has to say. The key is to let them know that you have a valid prescription for whatever it is that you're taking. I once went through an employer drug screen while I was taking prescribed opiates. I wound up having no problems with the drug screen even though I failed the opiate portion of the test, because they knew that I had a valid prescription for Percocet. What the testing is really for is evidence of illegal drug use. Heck, you can get a false positive for amphetamines by taking cold medicine, so it's important to report everything that you've taken recently.

I take wellbutrin xl, it can cause a false positive for amphetamines.
I agree with Laurie, show them everything that can help you as she says ( prescription, etc... ).

Hey Jaspun,
Wellbutrin XL is an antidepressant that should not affect the drug test. What did you show dirty for? Do you have a doctor's prescription for this med? Be sure to advise the folks who are drug testing you that you take this medication by showing them the bottle or prescription and you should be alright.
I'm not an expert on this topic, but if you have been in contact with the drug you showed positive for such as the smoke from marijuana that is enough to cause a positive result. Again I don't know what you showed positive for so it is kinda hard to say.
Hopefully, someone else will chime in here and give you more advice.

Wellbutrin can absolutely show positive for amphetimines and definitely affect your drug test. Not trying to be rude however people really should not try to answer questions they do not know the answers to. There is plenty of evidence to support this topic just give it a Google.
I realize this is a really old topic but I wanted to clarify just in case someone happened to run across this as I did.
