I have a 6 year old daughter about to go on medication for ADD. I have narrowed it down to the above 3 drugs. It seems like Vyvanse is the more popular drug, especially among children. Adderall seems to be more popular with adults. Also, Adderall XR is way cheaper. Does anyone have children taking the above drugs and what is your advice?
Thanks!!!

My 9 yr old daughter tried Adderall and it gave her horrible headaches and stomachaches. She wouldn't eat and couldn't sleep. She became very withdrawn and didn't want to play with her friends anymore. I couldn't handle seeing her like this. It changed her personality. Adderall is a VERY strong drug. We switched her to Ritalin which is not an amphetamine and only gave it to her on school days. Not weekends or vacations. It helped a lot and she was able to tolerate it.
I've taken all 3 in high school also for ADD, Ive tried concerta 32s, 54s, and 72s and they never seemed to help at all. The next year I changed to adderall and the adderall XR (capsules) adderall tablets where ok kinda made me twitchy, I could focus just could not sit still. The adderall XR worked the best I think, took one 30 in the morning and was fine and focused all day, started making better grades til they swhiched me to vyvanse which I only told the 60mg and 70mg and they both worked great but same as the adderall couldn't sit still and I'd tend to start making sounds for no reason (a listed side effect) all in all I passed school I am no longer taking any of the 3 but I still think adderall XR worked the best with the least side effects. Hope this helped
Note: no matter what she takes make sure she eats before or when taking her meds each day, cuz I could never eat after.
Hi, my 13 & 15 year old daughters drink adderall xr. Now my 13 year old one takes the 10mg 2 a day. Her side affects are no appetite, but very good concentration only while taking it when she doesn't hell breaks loose! Now with my 15 year old one it works very different she doesn't get hungry at all she up and at it all day she will work her butt off cleaning. Her work at school is even better than it already is. I will recommend this to anyone who has a child only with add not ADHD . For ADHD I recommend focolin XR 10mg 1 a day.
My son now 14 started on adderall at 6 years old for less then a year.. wasn't good for him at all... they tried him on so many different meds I was getting so upset with them but finally at 8 he was on concerta 16mg and it was great for him until he turned about 12. Then they put him on Strattera until a couple weeks ago because it started making him so moody and it was to the point he was hard to be around. He is now on 30mg of vyvanse and it is by far the best he has ever been on for him personally.. he is also on other meds to due to being ADHD and having Aspergers, they took his Celexia up to 20mg from 10mg and his Riesprdal to 1mg from 0.5 mg and I have to say big difference for him and myself.. I no longer worry bout him getting upset and saying things that worried myself and the school.. btw he is in almost all normal classes at school and you can only tell he has Aspergers if you talk to him and sit and watch him for awhile... good luck with your child but being threw all 3 of them I would 100% say Vyvanse but, every child is different... (:
i would try the vyvanse it is consistant all day long where some of the others wear off and you have to take more doses
My son is 7 and he started taking Concerta. He did really good on it, the only problems he had was loss of appetite and he wasn't sleeping well. About a month ago, we changed him to Adderall to help with the sleeping problem and he still has it. Those are the only 2 downfalls we have. Both of them have helped him with school work and with life in general.
My 7 yo has been in increasing doses of Concerta since he was 5. First on 8 hr then to 24hr, which only lasted him 8 hrs. High metabolism Dr said, so he had to have short acting afternoon Ritalin pill. He kept getting tolerant to the dosing too. He just switched to Vyvanse from 24 hr 20mg Concerta. Started yesterday and threw up.
I personally started taking Adderall when I was 6 or 7. I started to get straight A's. I could concentrate. I was able to function as a "normal" child. I am now 21 and still take the medication. It did end up having anxiety. I'm not sure if that was caused by the Adderall or if it was going to happen anyways. I personally think I would have had anxiety without taking Adderall. It's a great drug but can cause some side effects. I would recommend the Adderall XR as that will stay in your daughters system longer. I personally believe it has the best chance of working do to the fact that it has more than one stimulant inside the medication so it can be used for more people and be more effective. I hope this helps. Good luck!
I would reccomend Adderall but you might want to regulate her sleeping schedule because when i was younger i had horrible times where i couldnt get to sleep, there are also other side-effects like weight loss and loss of appetite but by the time the medicine wears of or when she stops taking it she'll get her appetite back and get to sleep better. I really hope your daughter finds her right combonation of medicine with her ADD Good Luck!!!
