Hi everyone, I've been put on topamax to hopefully assist with weight loss as am obese and am really struggling with food. I've just titrated up to 75mg (25 in morning and 50 at night) and have so far found no changes in appetite and no weight loss. I realise weight loss is only a possible side effect, but I was so hopeful about this drug helping me! My question is, have people found that appetite suppression starts at a certain dose? Or do u think its too early? OR am I just one of those for whom topamax isn't working? Thankyou :)

I take 100 mg. Of Topamax for seizures and lost 40 pds over about 6 months. I was also obese so the weight loss was a really great! I have managed to keep the 40 pds off for a year now and I’m still on 100mg. I really hope this medication helps you Jess, hang in there!!
I was put on the 25mg dosage and right away I noticed that soda and all caffeinated beverages tasted AWFUL- and I was an avid Pepsi drinker for years- had to have at least one everyday. Since then I only drink water because it tastes the best and I find myself thirstier than before, so therefore I drink A LOT more water than I used to. Also I have noticed that if I over eat (eating a whole burger at a restaurant, instead of cutting it in half) I will have a stomach ache within an hour and be super sick! Therefore, I have found myself cutting down to 1 meal a day (fairly small) and small snacks throughout the day with lots of water. Since starting the 25mg dosage my migraines have decrease from 5-6 per week to 1-2 and I have lost almost 20 lbs in 4 months. I would say it is working for me.
I take 400 a day and have significant weight loss to the point that I have to drink caloric supplements.
Hi friend! I've used Topamax same, as a weight loss aid. 2xday, 25 mg. Tablets. It did not affect my taste nor my appetite! However, I started losing a pound here and there. If you follow a decent or even regular diet (few carbohydrates, minimal fat, lean protein) Topanax should help. It helped me without changing my diet but already had a pretty decent one, small portions - the name of the game! Good luck... I've lost 130#!!!
It can take some time sometimes you may need to be on a higher dosage i just started taking Topamax again the first time I was on it I was taking over 100 mg I think twice a day before I started to notice my appetite started to curb and I got full quickly and I started dropping weight fast everyone else noticed before I did but I loved it I have taken so many different medications for bipolar disorder they all either put weight on me or kept me from losing weight which was discouraging and depressing Topamax has some irritating side effects but so do all the other medications at least with Topamax you can feel good about yourself
The first time I was prescribed Topamax it was for bipolar disorder and I was eventually taking 200 mg twice a day i lost alot of weight my appetite was curbed and I got full fast plus I got so skinny so fast at the time my boss was concerned I think she thought I was anorexic I loved not having to worry about my weight it really does work
I found that my appetite disappeared, but only for the 1st month did I lose 10 lbs., and I am overweight. However it encouraged me to start eating more protein, meats, fish eggs and salads n fruits, and then stay away from bread, carbs! Don't eat if you're not hungry, especially in the evening! Make sure you eat breakfast before you get hungry. Drink water all day, Topamax makes you very thirsty, and this is how it's helping me lose weight. Im not hungry. Good luck
I didnt start losing weight until I was on 400mg. 200 twice a day. I didnt have any other side effects. I was taking it for migraines. I recently went off it cause my migraines have stopped and I am gaining weight like crazy. I always hungry.
I have been on this med for another unrelated problem at 100 mg per day. I am very overweight and it has not caused me to lose weight at all or assisted in a loss of appetite. I still have to struggle with diet just as before. The only benefit is it does NOT cause you to gain weight. If you gain, put the fork down. Don't blame the medicine. Just a little humor, folks. lol
I only started to lose weight when my dose was raised to 200mg twice a day. Then I wasn't hungry at all! The smell of food made me sick. I didn't have any of the side effect that everyone talks about. Dizzy. Hair loss, none of that just I lost my appetite. Hope this helps
Everyone situation is different. Dosing, other medication you are taking(including birth control). The first time I started taking it I didn’t noticed the weight lost til it was too late. I was taking it for about six months and went from 166 to 106 and even months and years after I had stopped it I was still not gaining my weight back until I was on birth control. Now it’s going on 6 years and I am back on it for migraines but this time a low dose. First three days I noticed a huge change in drinking soda. Can’t drink it. My appetite is not as it use to be( I have been breastfeeding for 10 months and I’ve been eating as if I am starving all the time.) I’m on day 6 and I am forcing myself to at least eat two meals so I do get sick. I’m only on 50mg at night.
I can tell the difference with and without the medication I skipped one night and the next day I had spurts of headaches all day to the point when I got off work I was about to drive to the er. It also helps with the pain I have all over my body. I suffer from general anxiety, muscle tension migraine, regular migraines, migraine triggered by food, sun, my cycle, so I’ve been blessed by the genetic migraines. So no matter what I get them. But the topamax helps so much. Every person is different so the medication will affect each person differently.
Topamax for weight loss only works once. When you stop taking it then go back on it, you may still have some of the sides like pins and needles but the memory issue and weight loss are no longer present.
It’s great for epilepsy and migraines, if you suffer the sides take a break for a 2 weeks to a month then go back on it. It will be easier second time round but again you will not lose weight.
I have been on 200mg Topamax twice a day 12 years now for epilepsy, apart from the occasional brain fog I have had no side effects. I would love to have some weight loss along with taking this but have found as with any AED I struggle to keep my weight down. It has however been the 6th medication I've tried for epilepsy and has been the best for me.
I've been on topamax for over 10 yr for a seizure disorder at the same dosage that you are taking and I've NEVER lost weight on it. When I want to lose weight I have to use alternative means., , I.e. more exercise, change in cal intake, etc. I would say you are on the wrong drug for losing weight.
I’ve taken Topamax on and off for years for my migraines. 100-200mg daily. It did improve the frequency and severity of my migraines.
Every time I’ve taken it (for extended periods of time) I’ve lost weight. For the most part my appetite always decreased and when I’d go to prepare food, it was almost as if nothing “sounded good”. The normal crap I’d eat, I wouldn’t want. So I would mostly have sporadic small meals/ snacks.
BUT I did have other side effects such as hair loss, mild difficulty with thinking (fog), and an increase in my anxiety. For these reasons I’ve had to stop taking it. Everyone is different though.
Another thing to take into consideration is that you shouldn’t abruptly stop taking it. There is a risk for seizures if you do this. So ideally your dose should be titrated down before you go off of it.
