Hi, I suffer from a torn rotator cuff and am in constant pain especially at night. My doctor prescribed me four 50mg tablets of Tramadol a day or as needed. She told me to take two at bedtime. Will I be okay taking three? And what's the max mg I can take every day?
I just took three tablets of 50mg Tramadol. Will I be okay?

It's never a good idea to take more medication than prescribed, but with that said, depending on your tolerance or how long you've taken pain medication it most likely won't do anything but make you tired and possible off balance when walking. If the prescribed dose isn't working you need to talk to your pain doctor or whoever prescribes your meds. I always tell people to speak up when visiting your doctor, it's your body and your pain! No one else can judge you, see or feel your pain, so make sure the doctor hears you! God Bless and let the doctor know how you feel! Everyone here is great and a huge support team as well as a resource for real life advice since we're all in the same boat.
I went a few days ago and asked to be put on something stronger cause the Tramadol wasn't cutting it. She told me to just double the dose and call a orthopedic specialist. I'm on insurance through the state so I'm still waiting to be approved. I just got on insurance but still can't find relief for this pain.. I've been dealing with it for three going on four years.
Tramadol isn't the most effective pain reliever you could take. I've been a Chronic Pain sufferer for over 30 years. Within those years I've had 14 spinal surgeries and am fused throughout my entire back/neck except T1-T9. I've learned so much in these many years and one thing I learned is if you don't speak up on your own behalf, then you can't expect the doctor to read your mind. Be your own advocate. But back to the medication, like I said Tramadol is actually a very mild pain reliever. Perhaps you need to have your medication changed to a stronger medication, maybe in the opiate family. Many doctors are leery about prescribing these anymore, even though there are those of us out there that require and depend on these to be able to have a functional life. I would speak to your doctor about increasing your dosage or changing your medication to perhaps something in the opiate family.
There are too many to name here, but as I remember, I started out with Vicodin or Norco and a muscle relaxer such as Flexeril. There are just too many choices you have out there to help you and your pain. Remember you are the one in pain, demand to either be treated properly or go to another doctor. Doctors are like chocolates, there are so many different kinds to choose from, but everyone has a different like or dislike to each one. Best of luck and please keep us updated on your progress. There is absolutely no reason to suffer in pain in today's world, there are just too many pain options to try and too many doctors to help those of us who need their help! God Bless you and remember pain does not define you as a person, it's a small part of the greater person you are!!
I have what may be a torn rotator cuff. I also receive chemo treatments. I ran out of my 10mg Norcos. I asked for pain meds till I get my Norco in 9 days. I was given Tramadol. Tonight, 1st time, I am taking them to no avail. I am up to 6 !! No adverse affects, very mild relief of pain. I am a large male 275 lbs. 6'3." I am also 66. Don't know what value my comment may be just another story.
Wow- this is some of the best advice I have ever read. I mean that with all sincerity. I am only 35 but have suffered (still am) with bad TMJ/TMD along with neck and facial/jaw/ear pain issues all from a near death tonsillectomy.. At any rate, I've actually broken and spit pieces of teeth out in my sleep. I've been through 5 or 6 neuro drs and TMJ drs and broken ALL mouthpieces. The unfortunate reality is what you said- Some people require medication to live and function a normal life. With a wife and young children this has never been more true. I hate taking meds but w/o I am in misery. Most of the doctors I have been too just try and write me off so they don't have to prescribe meds so I couldn't agree more. Nobody can see or feel your pain so you are the judge and must make them understand!. Great Advice and God Bless
i have tmj too since i was a kid now the drs want to do a total jaw replacement on both sides. i break mouth pieces all the time too. the dr used to give something for the pain but not anymore.
now i have acute tendonitis in both legs now i have had in the right leg for 3 months and the left leg for a few week. the dr put me on tremadol 50mg every 6 hours for pain, along gabipendon every 8 hours for pain. im now up to 2 tremadol every 6 hours. can i take 2 tremadol every 4 hours? i have treated seizure disorder as well. i was wondering if i could go up to 3 one time then wait for 6 to 7 hours before i take the next dose of 2 or 3?
You will be okay. I would rest and you know your body best; go to ER taking your medications. My 20 lb dachshund takes a 50 mg Tramadol for his back twice a day. Hope this assists you.
I'm a two-year veteran of Tramadol, weigh 165 lb. On occasion, usually after a fall, one or both rotator cuffs will... get my attention. My Dr is OK with my taking 3 or 4 at one time, as long as I recline and stay down! I have found that three 200mg Ibuprofen, taken along with two Tramadol, seems to be as effective as three Tramadol alone. Irony, Tramadol tends to keep me awake!
I also have had severe pain in my left shoulder for 3 months. I am not a frequent flyer with Drs. I would rather seek out help and home remedies from online forums. This shoulder thing
is the exception. I have a very high pain tolerance but this put me on my knees.
I needed a Dr. Got a script for Tramadol. 100 mgs every 4-6 hrs. (Acetaminophen helped at first but after the 1st month I had zero relief.) Tramadol took the edge off for a while. I accidently took 3 at. once. It didn't seem to make a difference.
I started taking 400mgs of ibuprofen after 3 hrs due to pain breakthrough with the Tramadol. Helped for a few weeks. I then started taking Tramadol and 400mgs ibuprofen at the same time. This combo works the best but this is no way to live.
I go for an MRI Nov.28th. The Dr said at that point we'll see if a cortisone shot will work temporarily or on to surgery.
Forgot to say, in the beginning I tried DMSO. My skin was too sensitive.
I also bought a high end TENS unit. Didn't touch myAllison123pain but works great on my other occasional aches and pains.
My thoughts on needing to take more meds than prescribed due to pain indicates a follow up with your Dr or find a new one.
I hope this helps in some way.
Allison
Edit to my previous comment:
I take 800mgs along with my Tramadol now. This is what works the best for me.
Also
Don't know what the heck Allison123 in the middle of the sentence is about or how it got there. Weird.
Tramadol HCL gives me energy, that’s one of the main reasons I take it. I can feel totally drained, like my heart is tired and Tramadol takes that feeling away
Talk to your Dr. or Pharmacist asap
Its probably ok. But you should always take your meds as they are prescribed. Accidental overdose is no laughing matter.
Please be careful
Chaoskaye keep a eye out for over seditive and such that is about all it well but don't take that many again call your doctor if it is not working and got to the er if your having trouble breathing heart rasing ect when they say take 4 or 5 daily that is in divided dose's to keep a good level so you don't get severe pain at this point just look for overseditive etc or anything out of the normal range of what you have been feeling 1/2 of it is pretty much gone thru you of the higher dose please be careful any dought at all go to the E.R. AND TAKE YOU BOTTLE OF PILLS chuck1957
